Your Main Annoyance Regarding the Hobby?

Basically, what is your biggest pet peeve about the collecting world?

Mine is the money factor involved in the hobby. Essentially, the collectors with the best collections are usually the people who have no financial limits [or so it seems]. Also, there are so many kids without jobs or a sense of the dollar, and have amazing collections. The one thing they forget to mention every time they post a mailday of their newest 1/1 is that it wasn't their expense, but most likely their parents'. I can't make false accusations, but I'd have to assume that is the case quite a bit of the time. Primarily the hobby is geared to adults with decent income who can afford to roll the dice on products, and buy an influx of singles on eBay consistently. Conflicting issues with kids spending too much money isn't a problem yet, but you have to think it'll happen one day.

I don't really mind the dedicated adult player collectors. However, I would much rather see Baljit get a nice Peja autograph, than a Terrell Suggs one, because collecting your favorite player is the fun part of collecting, not the investment aspect of a player who you may like, but not enjoy as much.
 
Mine is kind of along the lines as what you were saying aj. My pet peeve with the hobby is the cost of boxes and packs, making it very hard for those that are on a tight budget to open boxes and packs.
 
Same with you ajbry, I hate it when people who have all the money, buy the dirks i want like a e-bayer by the name of BSC-SATURN!!!!, but hey we don't say names here on HI. lol
 
I hate all the autos and game used. I would much rather see the autograph rate at 1:200+ packs.
 
overproduction!!!
the main reason in was concentrating more on hakeem rather then bagwell is because in baseball it seems in ever product each player has like 10-20 diff autos or variations, its annoying!! this seems to be in football and absebal mor the basketball because donruss/playoff dont make basketball, thank god
 
I hate the extreme overproduction at some ends, but also the extreme shortprints as well. As a player collector, it really annoys me trying to track down 10 different Pacific parallels where the only difference is a tiny bit of foil that is a different colour. Also 1-colour patch cards.
 
Arrogance of some collectors, and overproduction. To many brands... does the companies really need a dozen different sets each year?

Yeah, but that usually goes for the 'best house', 'best car', etc.. as well, can't really do much about that except make more money... Fact is without money getting into the hobby we'd still be looking at the average card quality of 'pro-set' as near top of the line...

Just because there may be a hobby-wide lean toward the 'money factor' doesn't mean the collector needs to buy in to that mind-set.

So to put in my 2 cents - "game used" - this hobby hasn't been near as much fun since this stuff engulfed the hobby. Some of it is neat stuff, but I'm so sick of inquiring with someone on some base and inserts and getting the reply 'what game used stuff do you have'?

O Ya Paul.. I must agree with you on that. That bull always annoys me. Especially when at the end of the listings it says "No Lebron Auto Patch"

Its up there for top annoying things in the hobby.
 
There are many things that annoy me :)

1 - Whenever you go to buy a box these days, they all say two GU and one Auto per box, and you know if you pull a crap auto you've wasted your money, unless you happen to pull some rare shortprinted RC or something like that, and odds are you won't even want that card if you pull it anyway.
2 - Loser ebay sellers. I'm getting really pissed off with ebay sellers now wanting $4 shipping for a single card, and the general lack of effort when dealing with customers. If I have a query and ask a question, it's not too much to ask to expect a response within a couple of days. I've won auctions for $100+ lately where the sellers haven't even sent me an invoice to pay them and I just have to work everything out myself, and then if I under pay shipping they kick up a stink.
3 - How hard it is to trade stuff these days. I had a trade with BigDAlcala the other day, and it was so refreshing to do a trade where both parties just said yes to every proposal, instead of the usual nitpicking that goes on, or people resorting to BV when they have a card no one would pay 1/20th of BV for etc.
4 - Living in Australia, where there is basically no supply what so ever (unless you want to pay 2 times BV at the only shop in the country), and as a result having to get everything from the US, where our dollar stinks and shipping costs a fortune.
5 - Ebay Sellers who won't ship international. Hello, you have to go to the post office to post stuff anyway, so just address it international, I don't mind paying the extra shipping (within reason).....
6 - Ebay Sellers who won't accept Paypal, or will accept Paypal but not from Credit Cards. Hello, it's 2005 people, there is a better way to do things than by money order.
7 - No bubble gum in products :P
8 - Poor set designs and lack of effort in production.
9 - The shift of emphasis away from set collecting, thanks to parallel sets /5 /10 etc that make it impossible to build a master set.
10 - A lack of inserts in products. Surely it wouldn't be hard to throw in a half a dozen insert sets in products with varying degrees of difficulty to build the set, as opposed to opening a box of cards full of base cards pack after pack with the exception of 1 auto and 2 gu thrown in somewhere along the way.
11 - Overproduction.... Here's looking at you UD. GU is worth nothing these days, and at the moment UD are working out how to make Legends Autos worth nothing by making them much easier to obtain. It won't be long till none of your cards are worth anything, because everyone can buy them on ebay for 30c (+$6 shipping).

That's enough of my rant.

Amen! The extreme shortprints are partly what's caused my decision to stop collecting future sets and cut my player checklists off at H&P. I have a decent, yet limited, budget, and I've had enough of spending $50+ for a card numbered of 10 that happens to be a different color or shinier.

My other peeve has already been mentioned as well. As nice as the patch/emblem cards are, I can't envision routinely spending over $100 for one hockey card. Those expenses add up quickly, and it's not long before you're looking at $1,000 spent on ten pieces of cardboard with some bits of fabric and maybe an autograph. I know most people are no longer impressed by base and inserts like I am, but it doesn't take long before the super-expensive cards of today start sparking decisions between cards and cars. If you collect long enough, you could potentially spend the down payment on a modest home on hockey cards. For my own decisions, that's crazy!

You can routinely see cards of star players going for well over $100...it makes more sense to me to save up a few potential expenses and get one entire game worn jersey instead of a few bits!

actually you don't have to necesarily go to the p.o. nowdays. you can get postage online. and even get delivery confirmation and insurance thru paypal. but to send overseas, you still have to take it to the post office, I believe.
 
I would rather be collecting base and stuff of my favorite player and inserts and then if I was able to get an auto or game used it would be a big deal like it was way back when. I don't have the motiation when most members of these sites can buy Jordan autos every week or highend every week and I can't really compete with those collections. I know its jealousy,but sometimes you get jealous of how many great cards some members own and how often they get them,.
 
Player collectors who go after a certain percentage of the production line. Not to offend anyone, but to me that whole idea is kinda selfish.
