I picked up a nice run of sets, including:

*1964-65 Topps Tallboys
*1965-66 Topps
*1966-67 Topps
*1967-68 Topps
*1968-69 O-Pee-Chee w/puck inserts

I'm trying to decide whether to grade the Orr via Beckett. I know the number will be higher anyway if the card is certified, but I'm not super concerned about that. I've looked at a bunch of other examples of previous sales to try and gauge what this would come back as, but man, it is all over the place.

Have a look, if you please, and tell me what you think this would grade. Everyone who posts an opinion will be entered in a random draw for an autographed Johnny Bower card!

Thanks in advance!

I'm guessing this one will come back a 6. Beckett usually is more forgiving grading vintage. The three corners show some wear and O/C at the top (which is typical for this set). That being said .. a 6 grade on an Orr RC would be financially beneficial (not to mention confirming it is an original). Congrats on the nice vintage sets. I love the 64-65 Tall Boys! Rob

One of the grading criteria is surface condition. I don't think I can guess that angle.
I am thinking it will be a 5.

I would guess a 5.5 without knowing the surface condition but including standard surface I would think but if surface is better then average a 6

Bumping this up and wondering if I put it in the right place - since it's a contest, should I have put this in the Hobby Talk section?

I would throw a guess of a "5" out there. Combination of the top border angle and the corners I think keep it from a "6". Will be interesting to see. Great run of sets by the way!

I am going to have to say 5 as well.
Still a dam beautiful card tho. I was actually looking at Orr rookies on ebay the other day. Its on my list of cards I will never get.

well I'm not a grader
but
at any grade
its worth having..

good luck
with what you ever get back
just hope all works out..

I'm thinking 5.5, but either way that is a sweet card to own. Getting it encased would be a smart thing to do, Wayne!

As long as the surface is consistent with, or better than, the centering and corners, my guess is a BVG 4.5.

  • 50/50 horizontal centering
    50/50 vertical entering
    top edge damage
    bottom left corner minor damage
    top left corner wear
    top right corner wear
    bottom right corner wear

centering 7.5
edges 5.5
corners 5.5

assuming there are no surface scuffs or finish loss, I would say your card would is a pretty strong 6 EXMT.

Nice card.

As nice as Terry's card is, I am guessing that Beckett judged Terry's card to be miscue hence the 6 grade, as upon close scrutiny, the right edge shows a portion of the card border of the Gordie Howe All-Star card. Graded cards have their grade heavily weighted on centering.

Nice pick up. I would put it at a '5' using the Beckett criteria, assuming no creases that we can't see in the scans.

I've only had 80's and newer cards graded; all went to Beckett. It seems everything I've read online suggests going with PSA for older cards - thoughts on PSA vs. BGS?

I'll go with a 4.5 as well... It's off centred and the corners have wear on them along with some edge damage. It would be much higher if it was well centred...
