Offical 2014 NHL Draft Discussion Thread

yikes for the trade

it could be a great move

where would Bonino fit in the Van system? Sbisa could be a nice solid D man for Van

Ryan K will enjoy playing in Ana...

and so it begins! The Kesler trade was the first that needed to be done in order for any other deals to happen.

I love draft day.

I think it was a decent deal. Kesler has a cap friendly 2 years remaining before he's a UFA. His value decreases as he's closer to UFA. As a rental, Canucks would have received only a 1st. Bonino and Sbisa are for the extra 1.5 years. Sbisa was easy b/c he didn't fit the Ducks plans. Bonino provides immediate help so the loss of Kesler isn't that bad. If he can fill the #2 center spot and provide similar numbers, then it works well for the Canucks since Bonino has low cap hit, and is signed for 3 more years.

Now this gets super interesting. Canucks have another chip now to play to move up and get Reinhart, who they covet.

Will Buffalo take 6th and 24th for 2nd overall? Maybe. Edmonton could drop down too and draft Fleury if Ekblad is gone.

Garrison on the block too. 3 way trade? Montreal and Tampa interested.

I think it's a steal from Anaheim's POV. Didn't give up the 10th pick, didn't give up Shea Theodore, didn't give up Vatanen, or guys like Etem or Smith Pelly. It kinda sucks giving up Bonino, but you don't get a good player by trading garbage.

The Canucks have traded Jason Garrison & 7th round 2015 pick to Tampa Bay for 50th overall pick in 2014 draft.

Ugh, this sucks. At least from a fan, and collector, point of view.

And now Garrison to the Lightning as a salary dump - I am fine with that, Garrison has never been an impressive player to me at all.

This only enhances the fact that Anaheim is an incredible team on PAPER and a great REGULAR season team.

That is all.

I'm happy with the deals Benning had made today. I think they got a fairly good return for Kesler. Looking forward to what the draft now brings tonight.

Or better yet, they're ensuring they don't let the Kings off the hook next year.

HA!

No one "let" anyone off anything. That Kings/Ducks series was terrific hockey and LA EARNED it, just as they did against San Jose, Chicago and New York Ragpiles.

Ducks need to stop flapping their beaks and handle biz on the ice. I have a friend who is a HUGE Ducks fan, been a season ticket holder since their inception. He flames me everytime they win a division title and sends pictures of the banner.

Guess what I send back? ;)

That all said, great move for Anaheim but, like the Sharks who continue to be this alleged juggernaut on paper, you're only relevant when you win the last NHL tilt of the season.

Anaheim is today's winner; but this is solid deal for the Canucks tomorrow. Getting 3 warm bodies, cap space & the extra first pick (which still can be used later tonight) is not a bad return for a team that was hand-cuffed to deal only within its own conference.

Always best to get rid of an unwanted distraction and start off fresh heading into camp with this new team. Bye bye Kes!

You do know they have a Cup too right? Lol. It's not like they are the Canucks.

FULLY aware of that. 2007, amazing team they had, one of the best I've seen. But what have you done for me lately?

Been a Kings fan 30+ years, know a lot things about them, the Canucks and hockey.:)

Don't care if Ducks got the best of the deal. Canucks need to re-build. They were screwed by Kesler anyway b/c he only would go to Chicago or Ducks. Canucks are looking for cheap options who will be okay playing a couple of losing seasons.

Canucks will suck and get a better draft pick next year. And doesn't matter if they are able to make the trade for 1st overall with the 24th pick and Hunter Shinkaruk.

Damn James Neal going to Nashville. Hope they can land something good for him. James never really fit for whatever reason on the top line, but did have some pretty good chemistry with Geno.

Edit- Neal for Hornqvist and Spaling. Not a happy Penguins fan here.
