Your guess on a Gretzky OPC RC grade?

I'll end the suspense - this came back as a 6.5. I thought it would be at least a 7 or a 7.5.

The bottom left corner is dinged and the bottom right is touched, but aside from that there are no flaws in this card. The scanner put a bit of a mark at the top of the card, but there's nothing there. The sides are so clean I thought the card has been trimmed and hesitated buying it.

Having looked at some other 6.5 grades out there with rough cuts and four dinged corners, I think I got hosed.

That was my guess, too - 7.5 on a good day, 7.0 if they're being fussy.

If the centering or corners were graded 5.5, then I think the max they will grade is one full grade higher, doesn't matter if the other three grades were 10.

If that's the case, it would be nice if they gave the subgrades even if they aren't on the slab itself.

It's a very nice card but 4 touched corners, some tilt and off T/B I would say BVG 6 max. Right edge looks cleaned up or miscut at the factory so I would guess it doesn't make it into a PSA slab.

Edit: didn't see until now you posted the grade, seems fair IMO.

I mean if you don't want it I will take it off your hands....

I think it is about right for a grade but I can see your points to bump it up a grade or at least a half.

I find bgs to be great, but really bad and inconsistent with OPC cards.

Submitted an 81 Gretzky. First time came back a 6.5. Cracked it and resubmitted it... Came back an 8.5.

Depends on who you get I guess, but some are clearly being way more harsh on the opc cut.

PSA can be really inconsistent as well, I had an 81 Gretz that went from a 5 to an 8.

And that's why grading is a complete joke...regardless of the company. A jump like that for modern day cards probably doesn't mean much (with a few exceptions), but in vintage, that could be enormous as far as money goes. And why beckett has 2 grading standards (BGS and BVG) is beyond me. It does nothing but add confusion to collectors...especially "newbies". If a BGS 6 is worth the same as a BVG 7.5...just call it a BGS 6 and avoid all confusion. I guess people are too concerned with a "high number", than a nice card. Rant over :)

Any real Gretzky rookie is a good one. Congrats!
