Leaf Exclusive Nico Hischier

I'm almost afraid to ask but I'm going to. There's a small mom and pop store in NJ that does a good job at getting all the Devil rookies to do IP signings either early in the season or during camp. Would this exclusivity affect the store?

Wow so much negativity here...so many miserable people here....
So much UD-fanboyism here, so fed up of that crap, Sony-fanboyism in the gaming world, Microsoft-fanboyism in the computer world, Samsung-fanboyism in the mobilephone world and UD-fanboyism here in the hockey hobby while absolutely HATING everything else no matter how hard they (the other companies) tries, they can't just please you in the end, not even if they does everything right or even pays 1 billion worth of $$$ to you....

Haters are gonna hate forever....that's a such sad and pitful mentality which mostly has now on internet in nowadays.

Really really really happy that I has cutted back the activity and collecting to 95% now!
Disgusting!!! Just quit collecting if it's butthurting that badly for you to seeing that there're other companies but UD in the hockey hobby, you're just selfish!
Just insane to thinking how much the hockey hobby (others also) has changed since 2010 when I began to joining at various boards then.....

I has been boycotting forever with numerous other sites since last year since they're too venomous for my soul! That's not worth in the length sine the life itself is so short and precious to being completely consumed by the never-ending negativity on the internet!

I'm totally done with this board now!
Attention Mods! Just feel free to terminate my account and please don't contact me about it, I mean it!
The life itself is quite tough right now for me and I needs so much less distractions in my daily life and I don't want to be a part of the never ending negativity here anymore!

You cannot say that exclusives are bad, then go out and sign players to exclusives.

No matter how you try to spin it, or what you feel are valid reasons for doing it, it doesn't matter, it merely makes you hypocritical at best.

So if you were me, you'd just lay down and let UD sign exclusives all around you and just smile as they trampled over you?

Seriously. This is "do as I say, not as I do" at its' finest and I hope you guys at Leaf are fully aware of the bad taste in our mouths that a lot of us are getting

It's not about hate at all...it's all just numbers. We spend tons of cash on cards. If I spend cash on hockey cards, I would like them to have some value...unfortunately, in my experience...Leaf has shown that their product retains little value. The Eichel rookies are a clear indication. I would rather have an UD unsigned YG than any Leaf signed product. Consumers dictate the values. It's unfortunate that Leaf will destroy the value of another first round pick.

The player may do memorabilia signings, but cannot sign cards under any circumstance

I understand, but I completely disagree. You can hate the current circumstances of the licenses, but if you want to make cards, those are the rules you have to play by. Your other choice is to not have a business. So hope that the rules eventually change, but understand that's the game you're playing today.

I spend quite a few USD $$$$ on hockey each year...and have done so for more years than I would care to admit. It all goes to UD now. Leaf has absolutely no value to me as a collector...I was at the EXPO a few weeks ago and most dealers and most collectors only want to see UD stuff.

I believe when you said collector, you meant investor. As a collector, I love leaf cards. If I was only looking to resell, well who knows. (not me).

That's not what any of us are saying. This is a capitalist world and good for you for doing what yo think is best for your company. But don't tell us the exclusives suck and are terrible for the hobby and then continue to sign them. Do you really not see what's so hypocritical about that?

Politely I have to disagree with this assertion. People at the Expo go and look for what they want to add to their collection, whether it be U.D., ITG, Panini, OpeeChee, Tools, Leaf, cards from the last 100 plus years! Actually from my spot in the cheap seats there was a LOT of vintage card collectors on the floor, and those collectors were looking for cards pre-dating any Upper Deck offering. I think there's room in the collecting sandbox for all of to play, without slagging what others collect, or falsely elevating one brand over another by making unsubstantiated claims like 'most collectors only want to see US stuff'. No, I politely disagree. -Mike

This is a war between Upperdeck and Leaf , First Upperdeck signs Mcdavid who will be soon the face of the NHL , This probably pissed off Leaf who turned around and signed Eichel and a little later Veleno , which probably pissed off UpperDeck who turned around and signed Matthews The best prospect the Leafs have had in a long time and to make matters worst they sign Roy who's been a staple in Leaf's products , now Leaf is really pissed off and goes and sign Patrick and Hischier , I may not have the order of the signing accurate , Its all business , I'm just standing on the sidelines watching this trainwreck while still collecting the cards that I like best!!!

Question?

Can UD make cards of CHL/Overseas players? Cause it seems like Leaf can have the upper hand in this area. Get them young to sign an exclusive card deal for 3-4 years, before they "graduate" to the NHL where UD then signs them to an exclusive. This would essentially block rookie autographs of the top rookie stars to UD.

Leaf just got rid of their CHL Licence. I think UD will be picking it up.

And for a McDavid-type player maybe to sign a auto deal in the CHL, maybe, but it might cost too much to sign them before they are a 'sure thing'. Also, CHL autos don't have much of a draw compared to it's NHL Rookie auto counterparts.

I'd love to see upper deck get its legs knocked out from under them. Need more than one company with a license. There's no variety anymore and UD is stale at best. Mr leaf CEO, go out and sign up every top prospect, till UD caves. Id like to be a regular collector again; but I've been on the sidelines for a while, till I see some light. don't be put off by people saying your a hypocrite because you run a business to profit. You have to fight fire with fire. Being the nice guy for so long gets you no where in the end. Trust me I ran a business for a long time as underdog and I had to get dirty to topple a giant. Good luck.

I'm not sure what experiences you've had but Leaf in my experiences Leaf boxes offer 2-3 times the value a UD box offers unless you hit Mcdavid or Matthews. There's only so many times you can pay 120 for a box and hit a Ronald Kenins auto before you stop banging your head against a wall.

If you're talking about the re-sale side of things i get it but I had a huge Alex Steen collection that was 80-90 percent UD and the value didn't hold at all. I was lucky to get 40% back on a lot of cards. Not much UD stuff holds value unless its a SPA FWA, Cup RPA or sometimes YG of a great player. I had a crosby 5 player patch /7. It was worth 3-400 back when i first had it. I found it in a box a year ago and it sold for 150.

Firstly, I'm not you. What I would do if I were in your position has absolutely zero bearing on the issue at hand. Secondly, that kind of response comes across as little more than "I know you are, but what am I?"

If you feel that the only way you can compete is because you have the sole ability to slap a players scribble on a piece of cardboard, then your business model is seriously flawed. As mentioned over and over and over in this thread, unless you are able to present that ability in a meaningful format that will resonate with collectors, then that ability means very little, except to upset a fairly large segment of the collecting base.

Think outside the box. Leaf does vintage very well. What else is Leaf's strength in this industry? What do you do better than UD? Focus on that.

Or sign exclusives and be proud of it. Don't talk out both sides of your mouth.

This is in no way meant to side with UD over Leaf or any other card manufacturer. I would love to see Topps, Leaf, UD, etc ALL in the licensed hockey game.

Are they signing 8x10 photos or hockey cards? Because those two worlds are generally kept distinct.

I don't think Upper Deck is the reason for the drop in value there. That'd be like me saying I wouldn't be able to get back 50% of what I put into my Josh Gorges collection at this point. LOL

Plain and simple the single license thing sucks. if all the major players were able to make cards for each sport these player exclusives wouldn't matter. I'm sorry but you'll never find me even considering a card without a team logo on it. Might as well have JJ Nissen make cards again, absolute joke.
