Hope you all like my title :)

What would be the "real" rookie card of Quinn Hughes. His 18/19 UD Game Dated or anything that comes out in 19/20?

ePack has really blurred the lines on this.

That's an interesting one, and I didn't realize it was a thing.

I'd be comfortable called the GDM an 'XRC', and his 18-20 stuff being RCs, based on the limited distribution (an inability to buy packs).

But what does everyone think about Compendium ?

Trevor Moore's only RC is in 18/19 Compendium. I doubt he will have any in 19/20. Therefore, its his RC.

2018-19 would be an XRC. If people are going to consider a one off online exclusive insert to be his only true RC, then this hobby is in all kinds of trouble. ePack was a great idea when it first came out and for the first year or so, but has just turned into yet another money grab for UD.

See, I would lean towards the Game Dated. It is his first card in the NHL. Eric Lindros' RC is the Score one and he was in a Generals uni lol
Things have changed since then, though. According to the current rules, Hughes was not eligible for 18-19 rookie cards, so the GDM is just merely an XRC insert.

Plenty of other players in the last few years fall under that category. Compendium is extra weird.... in addition to being an online, ePack, exclusive: The "base" card isn't even physical... you're getting a parallel.

I don't remember last year's set well enough to go off the cuff.... but 17-18 had base, blue, and gold... 10 bases to get a blue.... 100 base to get a gold.

The blue is a RC then, since is the easier one to get than the gold?

It was always a money grab, lol.

Is it an insert though? It's card #79 in the "base set" of Game Dated moments.

That's probably true (was not eligible for a RC last year). I'm curious about the language of that "rule" though. I suspect that the NHLPA cares very little about defining a Rookie Card. What's more likely is language that reads something like "a player must have played by a particular date, in order to be in one of these sets that we're granting a license for".

Of course this brings up two questions for me:
1. How do Upper Deck's ePack exclusives relate to the number of licensed sets they can produce?

Exquisite, for example, is a set that mixed across several different releases (unless it was made into its own set this year? But I don't think so...). I suspect that means it doesn't count as part of the total number of releases UD is allowed to pump out a year. Overtime, same thing. I don't know what the number they get, per year, is.... but say it's 20. Does online-only... no physical packs.... sets count as one of those 20? Is it covered under something else they're allowed to make?

2. Did Upper Deck violate the terms of their agreement, by making hockey cards of Quinn Hughes last year?

I suspect the reason there is a cut off date has nothing to do with the PA being concerned that UD won't be able to give players a full slate of RCs.... it likely has to do with the pressure UD puts on Rookie to sign cards (and stickers) for them, so a reasonable cut off date has to be in place - to keep the autograph requests reasonable.

When I read the thread, my immediate thought was "XRC".... but I through out the Compendium question at the tail end of that post, because I've always considered the 10x Base card parallel from Compendium to be a RC.... but I can't think of a single reason why Compendium cards should be considered Rookie Cards, while the Game Dated Moments should not.

I guess I've always considered GDM in this fashion to just be its own insert set, like how it used to be an insert set within UD's main S1/2 sets in the old days. At least with Compendium there is a base set with parallels and then various insert sets. I'm not sure whether I consider the blue parallels to be RCs or not. This is the essence of the problem, though. UD has put out so much random crap in the last few years that there's seemingly no consistency or direction.

In my understanding, no, Compendium, GDM, Exquisite, etc. do NOT count as a product against their limit. It's just another form of a money grab on their part: Do whatever they can to make more money without breaking rules. This is why the exclusive is SO bad for the hobby. Look back at 2003-04, the last season that more than two companies had a license (not including lockout 04-05 since that wasn't a full slate of products). In my opinion, 2003-04 was the best year the hobby has ever seen as far as its products because every company was doing their best to put out the best products at the best value: UD, ITG, Topps, Pacific...it created amazing quality within the hobby across the board. While there were of course products higher and lower end than others, it's basically impossible to find a product from that season that was "bad." Every product HAD to be good. Now, UD just waters everything down to a disgusting level because they can. No one is pushing them to work hard for quality. It's really sad, honestly.

There's no question. His true rookies will be in 2019-20 products. An online only GDM card is not part of any set therefore cannot be considered a rookie card.

How does a rookie card from GDM differ from a rookie card from Compendium ?
Compendium is a full product with parallels and insert sets. GDM is just a set of inserts. That’s an argument I could see. I don’t consider Compendium blue parallels to be rookies, though.

I need to preface all of this with "I'm really only arguing, to play devil's advocate here" - IMO, I never once thought about Compendium cards NOT being RCs, and never really thought that the GDM as being RCs.... but as I said in an earlier post, this discussion did raise the question with me: "What's the difference?"

So the "true RCs" from Compendium are the digital only base cards, that nobody can actually own?

Why is GDM "just a set of inserts" ?? Because historically GDM were inserts in another product? Wouldn't be the first time UD took a large insert set, and turned it into it's own product.

You buy packs of GDM the same as you do Compendium (smaller packs, sure, and I'm reasonably sure you know what you're getting).

No parallels means it's not a set? I'd have to look, but surly UD still has other products that are free of parallels???

There are achievement cards from GDM, which I'd label as "inserts"

I don't consider an online only set (with no physical base available) to be a true set. A rookie card needs to be part of a set IMO.

So again I'll ask, how does this differ from Compendium?

GDM are only available via ePack, but you get the cards and can have the physical card mailed to you... so it's not like the cards aren't tangible. There is a set.

Compendium is sold the same way. You can only get it via ePack. The base cards are digital only, but you can have many physical cards from the set sent you.

GDM isn't a set. These are individual cards produced on the fly so to me this isn't even a debate.

Compendium only has parallels available as physical cards. To me, for a card to be considered a true rookie, it needs to be part of a true set. Base cards along with rookies (shortprinted or not). Being e-pack only doesn't matter. As long as you can get the base and rookies in physical form.

Agreed. GDM is a promotion basically. And, for Compendium, I believe according to the "official" rookie card definition, a rookie card has to be part of a base set. As such, a parallel could not be a rookie card, even if the base rookie is not a physical card.

The point of all of this is, UD is just muddying the waters purely to make more money however possible. While ePack can theoretically be a good idea, I think it's done more damage than good in some ways, such as this.

Okay, fair enough.

The lack of a predetermined checklist..... making it up on the fly..... that disqualifies it as a "set", despite the fact that that on ePack (or COMC, or whatever) I can browse "Upper Deck Game Dated Moments" and see the sequentially numbered cards?

And you're of the opinion then, that Compendium RCs - the Blue Paralells, I guess - are not true RCs ?
