What a time to be a hockey card collector right now.

Between this and the McDavid Jersey numbered Cup Rookie Patch Auto /99, we're seeing some of the two most popular modern day hockey cards ever, both up for auction. At the same time.

What do you think this Crosby goes for?

I know hockey cards sell for pennies comparies to those big baseball/Basketball cards, but it's so fun seeing massive hockey cards up for sale during this time. Could bring some much-needed exposure to our litte corner of the card collecting world.

Wow! The only copy graded pristine too. I didn't think a grade like that was possible with thick Cup cards.

It's also quite reassuring to see nobody tried to tamper with the plain patch. This will be a fun one to watch.

Totally agree, especially that last part.

I actually kind of like how 'plain' the patch is. While this card is exceptional in it's own right, I do like how in simpler terms it gets the point across that cards can be desirable, even with a 1-colour patch. The design of the card takes the main stage here and I love that. Plus, yeah, nobody is going to fake a 1-colour, so that card is safe in that regard as well which is an added bonus.

I can't wait to see how much this and the McDavid will go for. I also can't wait to mention this Crosby card on the newest podcast episode.

P.S: I just added you on Instagram.

I kinda like the pattern on this 'plain' patch. This is going to be a fun watch!

Yeah, the Penguins jersey's have a certain pattern on their patch material. I forget what it's called and I can't remember the name of it for the life of me right now, but it's really unqique compared to the vast majority of other NHL teams.

Glacier twill! Penguins and Avalanche are the only two teams that use it, fittingly.

I think the plainness of the patch gives it a weight of credibility currently lacking in the market - it's plain, ergo it's unlikely to be tampered with and is most likely authentic.

It's so rare to get a patch card to grade so high... though I do have to question the 10 on centering. To me the front looks off center. The left edge seems a bit wider than the right edge and the back seems quite a bit off center (see the card #180 and the Penguins logo on the other side).

Still, a wonderful card though and I agree that the 1 color patch gives it a lot more credibility to it's authenticity.

The Preds and Islanders have used it at times as well. Currently, with the switch to Adidas, I don't think anybody is using it anymore.

Adidas has their own number patch material that you see on some teams like the Oilers, that lightweight screenprinted sort of fabric with the dots on it. Teams aren't required to use it though and for the most part do their own numbering and nameplating in-house or through an outside outfitting company that does work for them. Pittsburgh in particular uses a local company called Pro Knitwear to do all their numbering and lettering.

Pittsburgh and Colorado do still use it.
Actually, don’t think they do anymore. The Penguins stopped using it when they switched back to the retro uniforms full time (even before adidas) and it seems Colorado hasn’t used it since the switch to adidas happened, which is a shame.
