Preview: 2019-20 The Cup

There's a "Mega" 5 case master TR break up at D&A - it's ~800 USD per spot. To give a sense of comparison, at the same price point last year, it was for 10 cases...so double the cost this year(!!!).

I'm passing on breaks this year for Cup. Just too much money.

I really, really hope this dies down before SPA releases!

If any of you have seen the movie "Vegas Vacation", this evokes memories of the scene where Chevy Chase's character "Clark Griswold" is hellbent on "beating" the Blackjack dealer and continues to liquidate his bank account to do so. After getting a tremendous amount of cash from the ATM and headed to the table, intent on FINALLY winning, the blackjack dealer "Marty" says this to him:

"You don't know when to quit, do ya Griswold? Here's an idea: Why don't you give me half the money you were gonna bet? Then, we'll go out back, I'll kick you in the nuts, and we'll call it a day!"

I say you guys keep all your money and avoid the junking, and go buy your kids, wives, or significant others something nice for supporting your hobby antics.

Most of the cards posted by UD on Facebook look really nice. The Overshadows are something different for sure.

For a couple of years, I spent what was for me decent money on group breaks. I have maybe 40 decent cards to show for this and a load of scrap. I learned my lesson, I spend much less at the moment in the hobby, and it's at least as much fun as it was! Vintage is so different when you're used to the modern stuff!

At the prices these group breaks are going for now you need to hit a BEAST of a card, multiples even, to come anywhere near doing "OK" in a break. Blows my mind where pricing has gone. $800 per spot?? How many cards in this release will approach that value? Obviously to each their own, not knocking anyone's choice to break it, or get in a group break, but just seems like the odds are NOT in your favor. It would take one AMAZING case to walk away happy I think.

100% agree - just a quick point of clarification that it was US$800 per spot for a break with 5 master cases (so 30 boxes) not just one master. Still very, very expensive (and literally double the cost of last year) but not quite as eye watering!

I think the best approach these days is to take the money that you would spend on a box/case/break and simply put it towards some of the singles that make their way to the market. The price (or partial price) of a box will get you some really nice cards. It may not be as fun, but you'll get exactly what you want.

The better play is to take the money you would buy cards with and put in in a S&P Tracking fund, or pick your stock if you are so inclined.

I always told myself when I got into this hobby in 09/10 that I would get a case of the cup every year when my means could handle the cost, I started doing this in recent years but at the rate of appreciation in release day prices, I think next year may be the breaking point (I do have a case of this years cup coming!).
