Preview: 2019-20 The Cup

I was talking with a dealer on Sat. and he thought that it could be as much as $1500.00 per pack. And the way I see wax going I believe he may be close to being correct. After all look at series one UD hockey wax. It has basically doubled in price in about a month.

CAD or USD?

The dealer I was talking with was in Canadian funds. But that still sounds like a lot of money for one pack of cards But for those with deep pockets it will not really matter a whole lot.

It sounds crazy but 2.5x is roughly what's been happening to high end sets in other sports (Basketball and NFL). Only downside is hockey has not seen the hobby explosion other sports has... then again, the middle tier products hasn't seen the 10x explosion other sports had so hopefully this is a one of thing or else we are going to see $1000 SPA boxes next year.

Yes it is crazy times right now.

Canadian pre-ordering pricing up at some stores (says sold out though, not sure if actually or they haven't confirmed inventory yet). Range is 630-800 a tin, pretax, so far. Doesn't seem too bad?

Laughable.......looks like the everyday Collector is going to be a spectator soon in this card game.....big fish entering the pool.

What's laughable is the ROI. Let the big game dudes come take over hockey, it's great as it will start driving the market up. Also, they will back off wax REAL quick-like when they see there is really no comparable stable of players to chase compared to the other sports.

In the new products, you've got Gretzky, Crosby, McDavid, and Ovie and your flavor of the day/week/month/year rookies. Done.

The Cup usually has a couple banger subsets, Monumental Patches leading the way, and on occasion they throw a new one out there that grabs collectors. I've said it before, saying it again, TO ME the shields and property ofs are meh, and again, you have your RPAs /99.

The aforementioned 4 players and key graded rookies from Vezina-Roy era are the money. But there really is not much to see in CURRENT hockey card INVESTING outside of flipping current rookie year issues here and there.

Cup is going to be an eye opener for these folks breaking...........

Does Ovechkin even sign anymore?

Even at normal prices the ROI was weak haha. Cup wasn't meant for the average collector but now.. like depending where you live in Canada it's like almost 9k for 6 tins of hoping to hit defensemen rookies /99? Yikes. With that said... pandemic and whatever though this will probably double in price by the end of the month.

I remember back in 2005-06, people were saying it was crazy to spend 350USD on a tin of The Cup.

It's a whole new ball game in the hobby. For those that can't afford the packs, boxes, grading, etc just have to sit back with the rest of us and see if it cools off.
