Let's say you have been waiting on a redemption item from UD for well over a year now. The item in question is a 1/1 item of one of the all time greatest to ever play the game, and one of the most respected and honored athletes of all time in any sport. It's value is priceless as it is the only item of it's kind from this person. You have well over 4 figures invested into the redemption card.

The redemption was entered about 16 months ago. In July 2006, you are told by an UD employee that they do not have the item and they do not know if they will ever get the item from the athlete. Here is problem 1, redemption cards for items the company doesn't even have or know if they will ever get. That's a whole other subject in itself, so I will leave it at that. So you put a little heat on UD and in September 2006 you are told they have the item and it will be shipped by the end of the month. Mid-October 2006 you contact UD about it, they can't tell you anything, and say it should arrive soon. Mid-November you send an email or two and get no response. Beginning of December you email one of the "big wigs" at UD, and get no response. Finally a few days ago, January 07, you send an email to the head guru of CS, and this is the exact you response you get:

"Sorry, our shipping department is only working on REVENUE GENERATING items at this time."

That's it, the entire response right there. UD is only working on sending out items that will make them more money? What about the people who already spent the money and are left holding nothing more then a useless piece of green and white cardboard. How would you handle this if you were in the same shoes?

burn down the building?

Have you contacted Chris Carlin in LV? I don't have his new email offhand, but someone should. He is typically (back in the day) good at handling these situations.

Good luck,
Jay

Yes, and Chris is the nice gentleman who gave me that wonderful one sentence response.

That is unreal. It's just another in a long list of mistakes UD has made over the last few years. I still believe we should get a bunch of hobbyists together and petition the exclusive deal. I know if we send our concerns to the NHL and the NHLPA, we will finally be heard. Anyone interested? I'd be happy to get the ball rolling

i would reply saying that not shipping your card is COSTING THEM REVENUE since you are not going to buy any of their products until you get it

We've been there, done that. Nothing is going to happen. The NHL only wants ONE licensee - it makes things easier when it comes deal time, generates guaranteed revenue and frees up time to worry about other properties. I doubt there will EVER be another licensed company; not in four years, not ever.

As for the response from Chris Carlin... well, it's definitely a slap in the face, but really, is anyone surprised? The only thing that could positively be read into it as that they are currently concentrating on the recent releases, and in one or two weeks, they'll have the time to get back to you... but still... not a fun comment to get back.

If there was a lawyer amongst us (with PLENTY of time and patience), I'm sure he would spearhead some sort of case against the NHLPA for this ridiculous exclusive.

I'm surprised that Chris would give such a response.

Not sure how I missed this post before. Of course you need to take whatever action you deem necessary, but here is something to consider:

Just today I called up that Redemption Protest thread and re-read it. One of Chris's commitments was to have the redemption status cleared up but the end of last year. He missed it.

We were also told that the Draft Redemption Cards would be done. They missed it.

We (hobbyists) have been bantering, emailing, PMing with each other about the next step, and I think we should move to the next step. Sadly I am concerned about how many can stick out the next two steps...

The first step will be our unified filing of complaints against Upper Deck as well as the NHLPA. The second step will truly test the tenacity of the collectors. I have been in contact with a couple of lawyers, one of which has expressed interest is the scenario.

The hitch for me is that the next two weeks I am pretty much out of pocket here and there. First Mississippi (don’t ask), the Curacao (vacation). After that, I will be able to commit whatever time it takes to initiate the first of the above 2 steps. I will start talking with the legal contacts I have about step 2.

If y'all can hang fire until 22-Jan then I will lead the charge. If you want to start before then please do and consider my full support in the ring with you.

This and not answering emails at all has become very common for the "almight" Carlin. People need to figure out, that everybody at UD could care less about the customers that have already spent their money....why would they?

Wow, very unlike him. But I did say he was good "back in the day" lol

Sorry to hear that.

Glenn,
Of course we can wait a couple weeks. Enjoy your holiday in the sun and rest up, because when you get back, theres going to be a big battle brewing.
I remember one of your comments about the "meeting" where Mr.Carlin expressed concern that the Better Business Bureau would not be a good route to take, he's right,we should go straight to a class-action lawsuit and hit em where it hurts.
Enjoy your trip!

Interesting response... same ol' same ol' from this end. I've had a card showing as in process/shipping since October and another that shows as shipped on November 30. When I called about them, I was told they'd "put on rush" on the one they've had available to ship since October, and that they would "re-ship" the one showing as sent on November 30.

This is the same exact initial response to past inquiries that lead to my message to you prior to meeting with UD, Glenn. Prior redemptions were allegedly shipped 3x before I finally got it when I told them the next stop was the BBB. Funny, they've had my correct address the entire time and I seem to be able to get mail and other shipments from everyone else who sends stuff to me.

To me, it's interesting they're finally admitting what's appeared to be the case for quite a while now, i.e., they only work on things that haven't already made them money... pretty much renders worthless all the lip service UD gave Beckett in the interview on redemptions and their promises at the Expo.

How as collectors are we supposed to boycott UD when they are pretty much the only product we have to buy from an NHL licensed standpoint? I would be for it....but then where would I get my Bergeron cards from? Do you guys think that buying the product/singles off of ebay or just the singles from someone privately is still a form of supporting UD?
I hate their customer service....total a$$es and have no clue what is going on. I had a guy tell me once that my card that was shipped out was already signed for and delivered and I asked him to research WHO the HELL signed for it since it wasn't me! Next time I call another guy tells me the last should have known that it was "stuck" in shipping in San Diego. Doesn't anyome know whats going on at that place?
Count me in on a list against them when someone starts one!
