05-06 the cup sidney crosby /99 what a steal

Agreed. Somebody shelling out that kind of money, for any card, is going to be awfully picky about the condition. If it has a seriously damaged corner, they are not going to be happy with it because it would be obviously flawed. At first glance it might seem a steal, based on the selling price of a mint version, but reality is, it's not that much more than a slight bargain. I think the resale market for that card is a lot lower than some might think, unless somebody is unscrupulous and breaks it out of the case with the intent of selling it without disclosing obvious damage. 99 copies is not rare by any stretch of the imagination, and at any given time, a Crosby Cup RC can easily be found for sale, probably in much better condition.

That being said, given the unreliable nature of grading, without knowing exactly how bad the damage is on the corner(s), it's difficult to understand just how good a bargain the buyer may have gotten.

From what I understand, the 6.5 corner on that card is a VERY generous grade by Beckett.
That makes it even more interesting. Probably worth considerably less than what he paid. Probably a steal at around $2k. The OP saying that himself and another buyer would pay 12k for it is foolish. Maybe the OP is actually the buyer and feels like he has to justify spending that kind of cash on a damaged card and sees some of the backlash and opinions on here.

I disagree. IMO condition is not particularly important for a modern card limited to 99 copies. The reason it is worth paying more for, say, a high graded Gretzky is that there are thousands upon thousands of Gretzky's whereas only a few 9's. Same could be said for any Young Guns.

If the corner damage destroys the "eye appeal" of the card then that is another matter, but it looks perfectly nice to me. It's not like there is paper loss over Crosby's face or a crease running through the signature.

I would probably enjoy this card just as much if it were 2 grades higher and would certainly pay $5K for it.

First: If the corner is as bad as some members say it is - shame on the seller for not mentioning it on a card of this value - graded or not.

Second: Based on the overwhelming majority of this sellers listings - the seller is hiding the fact based on the very poor scan provided. The rest of their auctions show VERY sharp scans.

Third: As far as condition not being as important in such a limited card - I would say that with any card of this value , condition is MORE important. While this card at a 8.5 or 9.0 would be good for anyone's private collection - most collectors willing to spend this amount of money are not willing to accept a corner as damaged as has been said. They will accept a single color or bland two color, or even some corner damage or face blemish, but not a severely dinged corner.

Just my opinion.

In theory, that is true: if you are going to spend thousands, you only want to do so for a perfect card. However, if the super high-end collectors choose to pass on it, that creates an opportunity for the regular high-end collectors to acquire a card they would not be able to afford in better condition. Case in point: low-grade vintage cards sell for more than they "should" compared to mid-grade copies.

And how readily available is this card anyway? It's not like there are any others listed on eBay at less than astronomical prices...

Some excellent points. It does appear the seller was trying to hide the fact that the card had a low sub-grade on the corners (or just the damaged corner). That kind of damage should be openly stated. Condition is paramount to most collectors. Having a vintage card with a dinged corner, which is a high-end vintage rookie, say, is a whole different ball game compared to a modern card such as that Sid, no matter how high-end or sought after it might be. A poor scan given the situation is definitely suspect. The 5K could've been better spent, imo.

I have been thinking about it as I read the thread, and I would rather have 50 hard-signed Crosby autos instead of this albatross of a damaged card.

they no longer do that with serial numbered cards , as all they will do is get the previous grade from the Data base and re slab the card with the same exact grade without even going through the grading process but they will still charge you the full amount as it was graded all over again

Guaranteed that card will end up re-slabbed and come back a 9.

Since when? There is another thread on here from a couple weeks ago where a Crosby Cup RC has been graded multiple times and eventually got bumped up to a BGS 10.
