Depends on the draft pick I guess, but Moulson wasn't going to re-sign, and has played like crap since arriving, so maybe that's all the market there was for him. At least they got a roster player for him.

Buffalo gets 1st, Mitchell, and another pick (?) for Vanek. Since they gave up McCormick too in the Moulson trade, it evens the Mitchell part. So pretty much a high first and another pick for Vanek.

Called that even since they got a 2nd from NYI too.
Odds were against them re-signing Vanek (although I'm sure Snow thought otherwise). Should have had it as a 1st conditional on re-signing.

Agreed. Vanek had better hope that he tears it up in Montreal, because what NYI are rumored to have offered him was definitely at the top end of what he is likely to get on the FA market. If anything, his value has been declining this season. I can't see him getting a 7 year deal worth more than $7M per season from too many teams.

I don't think it helped that Vanek was called out by Austrian hockey president for partying too much during the Olympics.
Vanek could go back to NYI and beg back for that contract.
