2017-18 The Cup Preview

Those mock-ups look great. Happy to see they are doing tributes of years other than 05-06.

They put the Patrick Lalime facsimile on the Laine mockup haha.

1) Nice looking cards. There are some that I will chase.
2) I'm with Ry. Hard pass on the wax.
3) I still think that this is the year that Cup might find its way to ePack. If Boeser is soft out of the gate, and as the prime rookie driver for this product....I could see it.

Isn't the "beauty" of epack that most products you don't have patch cards to scan. I guess Ultimate Collection would be an exception.

Also, the decision to do epack/no epack would have to be made long before pack-out, or are you thinking a 2nd wave where they decide to pack-out or do epack.

I like the skate blade cards, since it is different for Cup and /10. They should do well. But more of the manufactured stuff? Boo.

It's all going to come down to price. Nothing too exciting looking here. The 05-06 tributes had non hockey athletes too. Wonder if that will happen here.

Creativity: I already see the same rehashed rubbish in the photos as far as creativity, Championship Etchings, more booklets, NHL Glory. Outside of the continuity of Limited Logos, Honorable Numbers and such, this HAS to change. Oh skate blades? Nah, others have done this.

Aesthetics: I can't speak to this yet because the live cards always seem much nicer looking. Also we haven't seen all the subsets yet so I'll withhold judgement here.

Content: This is the BIGGIE. As Steve said, rookies drive this and on top of a weak rookie crop (or offerings due to exclusive signings) they will likely pull their usual horse**** of releasing cards from the last 3-4 Cup iterations in packs. Also will have to see how many "superstar" and 'veteran" signers they get to fill out the checklist, depth is key. it's been weak of late and a lot of redemptions on big guys they likely still owe money to for previous signings. I'm gonna go out on a limb (snicker) and say you're gonna take the paddle to the pooper on this one unless you break TONS of it and can balance out your hits.

Now, sit back fiends, wait a few weeks, and then you'll get your annual 4-5 day release of pack out images of the top 1% of cards and goaded into wasting the kids college funds.

Overall: Cup is for high end breakers and singles buyers, the average hobbyist should stay away from this dumpster fire.

I'm trying really hard to find something I disagree with in there, but I can't.

The "throw back" Rookies, I don't understand the point of either. We've been seeing this for about 5 years now. Are they just out of designs?

Don't get me wrong - I like retro / throwback cards. I think the MVP retro designs (and buybacks) on the 20th anniversary of MVP's first set was a good idea. When they did an entire retro set for OPC, using the 79-80 design, that was cool. Same with the retro version of 90-91 UD in 10-11 (though that horse has been beat to death since).

If you're going to do a throwback set, reusing an old design, it's got to be something considered iconic within the hobby - or it just feels lame (at least to me). I get the use of the 05-06 designs... it's a bit of UD pumping it's own tires (they would suggest that the first release of The Cup is now some kind of ground breaking - iconic ?? - set from the hobby's past) but it's not a crazy notion. That any of the follow up sets would get that treatment... who's asking for this stuff?

Why are they making Cup Throwback rookies of players that had Cup RCs in prior years, at all?

If they were doing a "10 years ago" retro set of current rookies, using 07-08 designs. That would kind of make sense. If they were doing vets (retired players?) that never had Cup Rookies in current designs, that would make some sense to me.

Why they would make an 07-08 Cup Rookie of Patrick Laine, in 17-18, is beyond me.

As someone interested in these cards, I can offer the following explanation:

Some of us collect players or teams not featured in the original releases but do consider those designs iconic. I collect the Jets and it’s cool to see Jets players on some of my favorite releases from the past. I’d be happy to add the Laine if I can afford it...
