2017-18 The Cup Preview

Saw the preview picks. Some really nice looking stuff. I realize the previews will be a lot of "cream of the crop" type cards... but UD made some beauties.

One card really stuck out at me (because of course) the Oilers 9x Auto booklet. Has Laurie Boschman ever signed for UD before? Kinda cool if they're starting to reach back and get other (unloved) players from the 80s and 90s.... though The Cup seems like an odd place to do that.

Kev, great point, I often checked that in years past, but it was useless? That's good to know it's gotten better, especially when they reference UD. specifically

That said, one period is kind of brutal but still legit, so I'll give them that, it is till legit. And as I mentioned above, I should have added more clarity but I think it was inferred, I realize the current players stuff is probably fine and UD has access, there's jerseys being made like gangbusters. It's the retired stars and such that are the one's I have little to no faith in.

There can only be so much stuff before it's just not plausible anymore. But I digress, The Cup still needs a major overhaul and help. The value is not there and the creativity isn't either.

Unfortunately how much more creative can you get? The Cup is the most innovative product UD has ever created. If you want to talk about a product that needs help there are far better candidates.

The set cannot have a new ground breaking popular subset every year. Its impossible. I will say though that the innovation is all around you. Its just that nothing has stuck with the collectors in a while and it feels as if nothing new and exciting has popped up.

As I said, the live cards always look better and you get a broad look at the subsets themselves as they only use a few on the sell sheets. And they look very sharp as always.

It's all par for the course, but The Enshrinements, Monumental Patches, Razors Edge and Color Coded are the best of the bunch here. The Limited Logos look a little nicer than usual as well.

Still waiting to see what big product dumps of years past will fill out the "value and content" of tins. That long with "hits" of veteran players with 8 Cup retro rookie card variations could be how UD perceives value is delivered.

2013-14 UD Cup cards. Lol:clap::duh:

Two of them, both 1/1's. Is it even worth mentioning?

I think we all know what The Cup is about. Those of us who don't break it don't have to concern ourselves about the 'value' it does or doesn't have, and the folks who do break it know what they're getting into by now. I for one look forward to it every year and usually pick up a few singles because they're always the nicest cards of the season and I like that I can expect consistency.

Kevin, should I mention all the other years stuff in it? Of course it is worth mentioning. Just like the value is worth mentioning whether you break it or not, c'mon man.

We both have plenty of friends that break it, don't you want to see them get good value, and every other collector that's in this hobby for fun first, not monetary gain?

As an analogy, this hobby with all the sucker/fiends/blowhards for UD, is like turning a blind eye to a 300 pound bully at school picking on the scrawny little kid with glasses in the cafeteria, while everyone just eats their lunch and ignores Conform, fall in line, blindly accept what products they present, repeat annually. There's people on this board that have their heads SO far up UD's *** they can't even admit when they are wrong and will still post a "positive" comment on something that is blatantly erroneous. Then again I can't be bought with RAK packages to my house or other BS bribery.

Hold UD accountable, or speak with your wallet as everyone always says.

If another licensee comes into play with decent stuff, I may be back in. Until then I'll enjoy the banter, stay fully informed of what's going on, hold companies accountable, and cheer all of you guys with your maildays and such.

Is the “return” from the Cup really any worse than in any other product as a percentage of the cost? No one is forcing or even encouraging anyone to break any. However, there are plenty of nice cards that I and others would be happy to add.

It's a business for them so you're absolutely correct, this product is likely no better than any others in "value" all things being relative. Except maybe OPCP and UD 1, I think those products are consistently above average in value. But I do believe they should make more effort where possible to show some ingenuity and break away from the stagnant stuff they churn out. And yes, putting cards in from products produced 3-4 years ago is absolutely LAME. We don't even know what they do? They could be printing cards today from 2011-12 that will just "appear" on the market. This is where some of the shady "replacement packages" to UD "cheerleaders" are questionable. Only they know what is going on. And it happens. ;)

And yes, I think the authenticity needs to be fully transparent and sourced, we have beaten this one for over a decade now. Print on the back where the material is from, i.e. "Connor McDavid wore this jersey from October 2017-February 2018 while playing for the Edmonton Oilers" or in a database "This jersey, worn by Connor McDavid while playing for the Edmonton Oilers during the 2017-18 season, was used in the following products:" and have the provenance uploaded for all to see.

I don't think that's too much to ask? Get a jersey, catalog it, add product to list as it is used, and/or take a second and change the info on the card back.

UD could be SO great, they used to be much better, but they don't seem to want to go the extra mile anymore?

I'm surprised with a release date like the cup that the patches for the rookies are not game used. They all were in 2002-03 premier and I believe 3 cards in 2005-06 cup. Also was a little disappointed with last years cup, for example Matthews rc patches being pretty basic lots of one color or weak two color patches. I'm not to sure if they're limited on the number of jerseys they can use. If not just have him wear one then put his hands and feet in four more jerseys. At this point if it's not game worn it doesn't matter to me where else or how he wears it. I'm hoping that's not the case with this years cup.

Limited Logos have been game worn for rookies since I believe 2014-15, 2015-16 for sure. Everything else is photoshoot.

Really? I did not know that. Wonder why they opted not to use the GU on the ARP cards as I'd have to wager those are the more desirable of the 2 for collectors, flippers, breakers, etc.

Aside from 05/06 were any other years of the /99 group RCs GU or has it all been photo shoot since? I never knew that until reading about the McDavid $50K plus sale and saw the back of the card.
