A bit of a long shot

I just sent you my $10.05.

Thanks for running this guys and gals and the generosity on this site is second to none.

One quick story here. This was last Christmas. I work with a lady who has an eight year old grandson. She knew that I collect hockey cards. She was telling me that her grandson is collecting hockey cards and shows her all of the time the cards that he has. He is a massive Detroit Red Wings fan and just loved all of the cards. He was at that great age where base cards are great cards because of who is pictured on the card. (If only cards were still like that now) Anyways, she gave me $100 to get what I can of Red Wings cards. I posted a thread in the in the buying/selling section of this site just stating that I am looking for Wings cards for an eight year olds Christmas present from his grandma and I have $100 to spend. I said that quantity beats quality which is very rare in this day and age. You should have seen the response that I got. I did spend the whole $100 but I got some smoking good deals. I had numerous people just ask me for my address and they will send cards my way. I also had a bunch of people just tell me to pay for the shipping and they will send cards his way as well.

In the end I had about 200 base/insert cards of Wings players. About 300 other base/inserts of players from other teams. About 20 autos/jerseys from Wings players and about 20 other autos/jersey from other teams. I kicked in a bunch of cards myself to top it off but outstanding help from others and that was just from this site. Someone also donated a Steve Yzerman SP Game Used patch /25 or /35 from the wing wheel on the Red Wings logo.

All that I can say is that I was shocked at what everyone was willing to do to help a kid out last year. What comes around goes around and this year it is someone else's turn.

Let us know when. Also, let's set a deadline for donations so I can get the $$ sent in time to make a difference before Christmas! Are we doing a vote on where the money should go?

What date do you think would be the latest at a cutoff point? We definitely have to leave enough time to get it to where it is going before Christmas, as you mentioned. If it was decided to send it to the local food bank for example, the date could be a bit later, than say Christmas Cheer, where they use the money to help a family at Christmas, and would need it sooner to make it useful for this Christmas.

I'd be happy to put together a list of possible charities for everyone to vote on, and any I missed can be added to it before the vote. Also, are we just letting the donating members vote, or anyone on the site? I'd be glad to help in any way, just LMK!!

Again, thanks to everyone who has contributed to this project. It's the little things in life we do that truly make a difference!

Guys, a note -- the two boys will be coming in the store tonight. I will give them the boxes and take some pictures and post them tomorrow morning when I get in the store.

Very cool Wayne!

As for the paypal funds, we need to decide where they are being sent! Christmas donation for a family or food bank or hamper program? Children's hospital?

Sorry I couldn't be there Wayne, traveling back to FLorida tomorrow and not heading up to Barrie until 7:30.

Great work everyone, glad to be part of it.

Happy Holidays.

Brian Price

I was alone in the store tonight so the camerawork stinks, but Matt and Tyler stopped by tonight. They had no idea what was coming, and they were stunned when I told them we had taken up a collection to replace their boxes lost at the Expo.

They (and one of the moms) were even more shocked when I told them Dr. Price had donated the boxes and the funds raised would go to a charity. The boys were in a hurry, but they both broke the boxes and hit nice hits (three colour instigators patch in one, red Combatants and a Potvin/Hextall in the other).

Both boys were extremely thankful for everyone here's consideration and donations and asked me to pass that along to all of you. HI can be proud.

Thanks for taking the time to do this Wayne. Thank you to Dr. Price for donating the boxes, and thanks to everyone who were able to pitch in a little cash towards making this happen, which will turn into a nice donation to a charity TBD on our behalf. Also, a big thank you to ISA Grading for sending the boys two graded autos from the Enforcers set. It's the little things we do in life that make a huge difference. The members of Hobby Insider are some of the most kindest, caring, and classiest individuals you'll ever find in any group. Way to go everyone!

Glad the kids got the boxes and got some great cards out of them.

A big thanks really needs to go out to Dr. Price with the donation of those boxes, truly a class act going above and beyond. Enjoy the weather in Florida.

I like the idea of the cash going to the Childrens Hospital, they could always use more cash to help as many little ones as they can.

Guys, I also wanted to add that the two cards being held in the photo were graded Enforcers autographs sent along to give to the kids. Unfortunately, I have managed to lose the dadgum note sent along with them to give credit for this kind gesture. If the person responsible could drop me a PM, I would appreciate it. Thanks!

Wayne, the 2 graded Enforcers autographed cards were sent by Tim (who also goes by Tal) from ISA Grading. They are a relatively new grading company out of Michigan trying to get themselves established in the grading card industry. Great guys, great service, and great pricing. I know they take most of the hits from preview boxes sent to them by the various card companies, grade, and slab them, and send them out for contest give-ways. Everyone should check them out, and maybe give them a shot? Troy

I think we need to set up a poll for a vote on where the funds go:

1. Food bank
2. Children's Hospital
3. One specific needy family
4. Something else?

Bruce

FYI, there's $311.04US in the paypal account, after fees on a couple of units (not sent as gifts), plus my $50, so $361.04US. Ready to go!

Did a bit of resaearch, and came up with a list of various charities that seem to be a good choice to donate to. This is what I found, and I'm sure there are more. If there are others that need consideration, please post. Bruce, a poll is a great idea. Feel free to use whichever choices you want on the list below. They are all great choices. I wish we could help them all. Still not too late to donate if anyone is still interested.

Woman and Childrens Shelter: Is a facility where battered, and abused woman can go to with, or without children, that will provide them with a place to stay when they want out of an abusive relationship. They also provide councelling, safety awareness, legal, and court support etc.

Local Food Bank: Provides food for needy, and hungry families year round. This time of year is usually the busiest, and most needed time of year for donations.

Covenant House: Provides help, and support, and changes the lives of homeless teens.

Easter Seals: Creating a better life for kids with Disabilities

Autism Speaks Canada: Funding research into causes, prevention, and treatments of autistic children.

Make A Wish: Granting wishes to bring hope, strength, and joy to children with life threatening medical conditions.

Childrens Aid: Dedicated to improving the lives of abused, neglected, and at risk children.

Ronald McDonald House: Dedicated to help children with serious, and/or life threatening illnesses, or disabilities, and their families.

Santa In The City: Toronto basedbrings the magic of Christmas to local kids in need by answering Christmas list letters through an adoption process that will deliver gifts to those kids who would go without.

Hospital For Sick Kids Foundation: Established in 1972, SickKids Foundation raises funds on behalf of The Hospital for Sick Children. The Foundation's fundraising is driven by the belief that improving the health and well-being of children is one of the most powerful ways to improve society

Great post!!! All are worthy and need the money. I only donated $10 so I do not have much of a say but any of those charities would be fine with me.

Don't be silly everyone has an equal say no matter how much was donated. It's the thought that counts here.

The problem now is we are less than 2 weeks away from Christmas, so some of these charities may be past the time sensitive frame needed to help them for this year's Christmas. We really need to get this decided soon. If I had a wish, I would help all of them.

I'm a little partial to The Hospital For Sick Children in Toronto, because anyone who has had a child, or knows of a child that has visited that facilty will tell you just how special that place really is.

I guess posting a thread with a poll to vote on the charity is the best option for us. I'd be more than happy to set it up, but at the same time, I don't want to step on any toes. Just say the word, and I'll do the work. ;)
