A bit of a long shot

Just another thought for any other fundraising thread. Maybe as a site we can sponsor a child. I have never looked into it but it is not that expensive.

I think we should keep the funds local in the Barrie area, as that's where the boys are from that triggered this situation. The food banks have the most effect on families and kids this time of year and the big children's hospitals have entire divisions for fundraising (not minimizing it at all - my daughter needed the BC children's hospital). I'd suggest we just send the funds to the Barrie food bank, on behalf of the boys - maybe even have them deliver it?

That's something I was thinking about a couple weeks ago, but that would have been best to co-ordinate with the boys when they came in for their boxes. Might be too late now, unless Wayne wants to reach out to the family, and ask them if they would? To have the boys hand it over to the foodbank would have been spectacular.

You are right, this time of year puts a major strain on supplies at the foodbank, with families struggling to put gifts under the tree for the kids, and increased hydro, and gas bills just to keep warm in the winter months, most have very little to put food on the table, and have to resort to the foodbanks for relief.

Short-term, I agree this may be the best choice to help many families this time of year. Whatever everyone decides is great, there really isn't a bad choice. Too many worthy causes, and not enough money to go around to help everyone.

We delivered a freezer full of food to a single mom a couple nights ago locally. The smile through those tears of joy was incredible. The food bank is the way to go for me, as it helps more than just one family.

I agree! That was a wonderful thing to do, Bruce. I can tell you from experience, your gift to that family meant more to her than one could ever imagine. I have been on both sides of the fence, so I know exactly how she feels. What you did for them is what the true meaning of Christmas is, and always should be. Society puts too much emphasis on what did you get for Christmas, when it really should be what did you give?

Getting gifts is always nice, we all enjoy that, but there comes a time in life when putting a smile on someone elses face is really what should make us happy. To be able to do that for someone must have made you feel absolutely fantastic. I hope I can do something like that myself real soon. Unfortunately, a bad run of health has made things very difficult for my family the past few years, but better days ahead.

Here's the link to the Barrie Food bank: http://www.barriefoodbank.org/get-informed

Only thing is I couldn't find out from that page if they accept paypal donations, or not. I saw cheque, and credit card options, but unless I missed it, I didn't see paypal as an option. I know we haven't made the decision yet, but that's something we need to consider if this is the choice that we go with.

The food bank idea is a fantastic idea. I know that food banks have a serious run on supplies at this time of year and any help that is passed their way is greatly appreciated.

I think the idea of the Barrie Food Bank is pretty awesome too. If it helps, the PayPal can be transferred to my personal account and I can issue a bank draft for the amount and handle setting everything up with the kids and the Food Bank.

Looks like the Ronald McDonald House is the favorite pick to se the funds to. I did some searching on their site, and didn't see a paypal option for that charity either. We'll have to figure that one ut once the voting has ended. Maybe, one of those loaded prepaid Visa cards can be purchased and send the funds through one of those? I saw them at Shoppers Drug mart the other day.

Thanks to everyone who took the time to vote, and to everyone who contributed a donatio to the cause. Voting is now closed. The charity that received the most votes was Ronald McDonald House, which is a fantastic choice. They are all good choices, I just wish we could donate to them all.

Okay, I can't find any paypal address for Ronald McDonald House, so I'll just get a bank draft and draw out the funds to my account to offset the draft. I'll post a copy of the draft for everyone to see and then mail it off.

Weird, huh? I looked for it several days ago, and couldn't find it, either. I find it odd that these places aren't set up to receive paypal donations. There must be a reason why?

Probably fees. They likely have $0 fees with credit card companies as they're a registered charity. Who knows?

You are probably right about the fees. Maybe they get a break wth the credit card companies on those transactions. Maybe paypal isn't so generous? They are American, right? Even still, you can send via gift, so I dunno?

$400CDN bank draft, made out to Ronald McDonald House from "Hobby Insider" :D

Bruce, that's awesome! Thanks so much for doing this, and a huge thanks to everyone who made this happen. Looking forward to doing this again next year, and hopefully making it a yearly tradition on the best site in the world.
