Booing Phaneuf?

I was a little disapointed in Flames fans last night. Why were they booing PHANEUF? I understand Sens fans booing HEATLEY (or even Oilers fans for that matter). Players who publicly abandon their team, demand to be traded etc deserve the boo.

As far as we know, PHANEUF didn't ask to be traded, it was actually a surprise to him and us all. He played hard when he was in Calgary and this is how we treat him?

I don't get it.

Flames fans are probably unhappy with what they got back in the trade, therefore taking out their frustration booing the most high profiled player involved in the trade.

Phaneuf didn't do anything wrong. He worked hard for the Flames fans and the Flames traded him. He didn't ask to be traded or moved. If they were upset over the trade then they should have cheered an ovation for him every time he touched the ice.

Phagoof was a cancer within the organization and not surprised at all the fans are all over him. The stories of dressing room riffs don't stay private forever.

Fans boo because they want to - Phaneuf is one of the top players on the opposing team, so why wouldn't you boo him? There doesn't need to be a slight to the fans to identify and bother a player on the other team, does there?

Booing your own team, now that's a different story.

I thought it was Leafs fans booing because Phaneuf is the top player on their team... I mean I wouldn't even know how to support the Habs if a guy like Phaneuf was the best guy to hit the ice for 3 periods a game 82 times a year. I'd boo that. I wouldn't travel to Calgary to boo that, but I thought Leaf fans were hardcore...

1) He is a cancer to have on the team (which explains why he is the captain in toronto....).

2) Even though he is a cancer, he was a top rated prospect on the flames, and suddenly losing him hurt the psyche of the fans.

Ive never liked the scrub, but he plays the game hard. He just needs to stop firing pucks at the net after the whistle....

The time he was on the Ice for Calgary he was a monster. I loved to watch him play, finish his checks and genrally give his all. Off the ice he was a different story alltogether. I understand why they booed him. Personally I would not have given him the satisfaction of booing. I would have loved him to have been given the silent treatment but to be honest with most of the suits at the dome' it would be hard to tell when they were being intentionally quiet.

Agreed. The Leafs were more than happy to take him. And many other teams would have too. I'll take Burke's judgment over Sutter's any day on who's a valuable player and who isnt. Calgarians bitter about this trade can try to run his name down and call him this and that all they want.....with no actually evidence to back it up....just things "they heard" or "read in the Calgary Herald". People who have never set foot in the Flames locker room but "dont want to get into details"..."heard he was called Neon Dion".....blah blah blah
Like he's the only player in the history of pro sports with an overly confident demeanor. All this cheap backlash sounds like jealousy to me......

But I suppose those who are bitter could be trying to make themselves feel better about the trade. Heck I guess I would be bitter too after the disaster for the Flames the trade has turned out to be.

Why not boo Sutter Calgary fans??

This.

The good news is that Flames fans get every single Phaneuf turnover shown to them on Sportsnet, TSN, etc ad nauseum... a great reminder that while they didn't get great returns, they got rid of a HIGHLY overrated player.

you're wrong. they boo'd him because he's a sloppy seconds lover. nobody likes those

Id be unhappy too. But they stick with "stories" they read in the Herald or heard from a "friend of a friend" about how bad he was in the dressing room etc. (Like they've ever set foot in the Flames dressing room, or they have a video camera in there to see all that goes on.)
Sutter, the Calgary Herald, and bitter flames fans say he's no good.....but the other GM's in the league would have him on their team in a heartbeat. One of the most respected GM's in the league was more than happy to add him to his team and make him the captain. But I suppose the Calgary Herald knows better.....
The bitter reality is Sutter traded a top player for nothing meaningful in return. He can call his buddies at the Herald and feed them all the locker room trash talk they can publish to try to make him look better. It doesnt change the reality of the trade. You can try to spin the situation all you want by calling Dion "overrated", or giving him a childish and tasteless nickname about a disease that has probably killed a family member or two of most members of this board. It doesnt change the facts.

Seriously? Have you been WATCHING him play this year? He's been mediocre at best this year. That is a FACT. He has been EXPOSED as an average defenseman... he's just not a #1 guy. Watch Kypreos and MacLean every night the Leafs play... they show you exactly how it happens.

As for your assertion that "respected" Brian Burke trading for him and making him captain means something, well, let's just say "Phil Kessel trade" and put what's left of his credibility as a good/smart GM back in the trash can where it belongs, shall we?

Which is not to say that Sutter's any better... because he's not.

Top player, my foot.

Adding a bunch of capital letters to your post doesnt make your statements any more factual. I'll go with the opinion of Burke and the rest of the current GM's of the league over the Sportsnet crew. Hanging your hat on Nick Kypreos, as some sort of unquestionable hockey expert, to make your point? :dizzy:
You were saying something about credibility......? ;)

He has played in only fifteen games this year because of his injury in case you missed it.

This thread is kinda spent, but I felt compelled to point out that the Flames brass felt Bouwmeester was a more competent person than Phaneuf. And we see how thats played out in CGY.....

I still feel they kept the better dman and person.
