Brodeur said he still wants to play in the NHL, just not with the Devils anymore as the have "Schneids" (Cory Schneider). Brodeur is looking to go to a team that needs a new starting goalie, or possibly a team that can win the cup.

LOS ANGELES -- Add Martin Brodeur's name to the mix for the July 1 free-agent market, as the NHL's all-time winningest goaltender has decided he's ready to leave New Jersey and see what's out there.

"I've come to the conclusion that I'm definitely going to be available July 1,'' Brodeur told ESPN.com on Friday. "I want to play one more season and I want to see what's out there."

Brodeur, who turned 42 last month, said he hasn't completely shut the door on returning to the Devils but feels like it's most likely he'll be elsewhere next season.

Martin Brodeur, the NHL's all-time winningest goaltender, is ready to say goodbye to New Jersey and test free agency.
"I've had a lot of good conversations with the Devils, but I'm not inclined at going back at this point," said Brodeur, whose contract expires June 30. "I just feel that with Schneids (goalie Cory Schneider) the organization has to move on. Me being around might be tough a little bit for them. I don't completely put it out of the question (returning to New Jersey), but I don't want to mess up the cards for the Devils.

"At the end of the day, it doesn't matter where I go next, I'm always going to be a Devil. I'm always going to come back to the organization. But I want to play one more year. So I'll see what's out there."

Brodeur briefly dipped into the July free-agent market a couple of years ago before re-signing with the Devils. This time he's mentally prepared to make the jump.

"I want to challenge myself. It's a different opportunity, I've never experienced this before," Brodeur said. "I feel the year I had last season I can still play at a high level. I think I can help certain teams. I look at what happened in the playoffs with certain goalies and certain teams, I wish I could have been there for them."

In terms of a fit, Brodeur has a few ideas.

"I've got to see what the opportunities are. I'm not going to go somewhere where I don't feel comfortable," he said. "If I go somewhere as a No. 2 goalie, it's going to be a team that has a really good chance to win a Stanley Cup. If I go for a No. 1 job, it's going to depend on the situation. I think there are teams that can use me."

Brodeur also joked that maybe nobody will want him.

He does know that he'll be patient, as he may have to wait and see as the free-agent market develops.

That can also be found here.

Now the question is, where do you think Brodeur will wind up? Discuss.

I think the Habs should sign him for one year. Keep Tokarski in AHL. Send Budaj to NJ for negotiating rights before July 1. Worst case, buy out Budaj.

Many of the talking heads on NHL Radio think that Vancouver would be a good spot for him for a year - not sure that I 100% agree but it certainly could be a fit if they think there is something long-term in Lack or Markstrom.

Sure wish he's finish out his career with the Jers or Flames but pretty sure he wouldn't entertain either. If he wants a Cup then the Leafs are out. Perhaps the Habs? The stars? The Ducks? Of course the Flyers will make a play for him since they are still looking for Hextall's replacement.

I was thinking he would be a great guy for the young Flames to bring in, but it makes sense he wants to go somewhere that affords him a shot at one more Cup. I really hope (and seriously doubt) the Hawks bring him in. They are stuck with Crawford and the last thing they need is a ticked off Crawford making waves and being a disruption if they brought in a guy like Marty. As Jeremy said, I can see the Flyers making him a crazy offer, they have a tendency to bring in guys past their prime and overpay them. If they have lost faith in Jimmy, I can see the Wings maybe offering him a 1 year gig.

So, what you're saying is the Leafs have no shot at a cup this year? :duh: I'm shocked!

I would not be surprised to see him in Pittsburgh.

Philly has 2 very capable goalies that are costing them next to nothing and broduer is not an upgrade to Mason.

Chicago would be a good #2 fit but do you honestly believe he will be happy as a #2?

Minnesota shocked the hell out of me this year, so having someone like Brodeur in net could be moving them a step closer, if he can still play to a high level? Although the Avs goaltending was solid this past year, and a big part of why they were successful this year, would that be a good fit there in Colorado? Would it be too awkward playing for Roy, though?

It's nice to want to go play for a team who's got a shot at a cup next year, on paper at least, the problem is the elite teams all have solid #1 goalies already. LA (Quick), Chicago (Crawford, and Raanta), Ducks (have a few new good ones coming up),Montreal (Price), Boston (Rask), New York (Lundqvist), and the Leafs (Bernier).......... I joke, I joke!!! No way Montreal is an elite team.

The Wild makes sense to me, and even Anaheim if they wanted to hold back the goalie prospects one more year, but I think they are ready to step up now. Even the Caps could use him, but would need to add a couple more pieces to be considered a contender. Pens could move out Fleury, but at this stage in his career, would Marty be considered an upgrade in net?

I would love to see Brodeur in Vancouver.

With Brodeur and Lack that would be a 1A and 1B situation. I know there are trade rumours with Kesler around but who knows...stranger things have happened.

the perfect spot for him is in

MONTREAL

get rid of

PRICE/BUDAJ

then you'd have a great 1 and 2 goalies..

Personally, I see Brodeur headin to Anaheim because the ducks are already good and a solid team. Hold off the prospect goalies for maybe another year, and Brodeur can finish a great season off in Anaheim.

Marty has been adamant that he is not going to be a back-up to the full extent of the word.

I don't see Montreal happening because as much as I'm sure he would love it there, he wouldn't be a happy camper sitting behind Price for 70 games.

I think Minnesota is a perfect fit for him - they play a sound defensive style and wouldn't hang him out to dry too often.

His .900 goal-tending from last season, if maintained, would not go over well in Toronto where he would see 45 shots a night.

If he wants a shot at a fourth ring, he should sign to play a year in Detroit, in my opinion - weaker conference, a great team and Howard is injured so often that he would probably get the perfect amount of ice time.

If we could somehow dump Backstrom I'd love to have Marty here in Minnesota for next season. Brett Favre gave fans what they wanted (besides a championship lol) so why can't Brodeur do the same? Good defensive play, great home crowd plus I believe one of his kids go to school in Minny.

Maybe Detroit. Due to injuries the Monster played lots last year and Brodeur is certainly an upgrade there.

Gustavsson was 16-5-4 last year as a backup to Howard... to me, that merits another contract with the Wings.

Knock the Habs off the list as well, per a report a few days ago.

This is going to be interesting... I also wonder how much money he will want!

Not sure why people keep talking about Minnesota - they currently have Backstrom and Harding in contracts and Kuemper is a UFA who I can't imagine they let walk to bring in a 40+ goalie.
I don't believe that Backstrom is elgible for a compliance buyout as he was signed after the lockout (not 100% sure on that) and I can't imagine there is a huge market for an aging goalie with health issues who hasn't been all that effective when in net.
