Can someone explain to me the appeal of Project 2020?

Primarily my question is, why are some selling for so much? They don't seem to have autos or memorabilia pieces. They are just artistic. Are they hard to get? Are they expensive to buy from Topps?

For example, from what I can understand, this George Brett card sells for thousands:

https://www.topps.com/topps-project-2020-card-11-1975-george-brett-by-gregory-siff.html

There's over 1000 of them. What was the initial sale price?

They're $19.99 direct from Topps. $16.49 if you buy 5. $14.49 if you buy 10. Each card is available for 48 hours. And they're print to order. Alot of the early cards only had runs of 1-5k. More people are collecting or buying to flip. Print runs have risen and the low PR cards have taken off.

Honestly, it's been insane. I bought an extra copy of a Dwight Gooden card that had the lowest print run a couple of weeks ago for $175. Currently, they're selling for about $3000USD.

Wow crazy. I just can't believe there are thousands of people who want player X's artistic card to the point that they are pushing these cards into the thousand dollar plus territory

Alot of the artists have huge followings on social media. Ben Baller, I think has over 1 million followers. So it's reaching much further than the sports card world.

Like Derek said, do not underestimate the power of the social followings these artists have. Most have over 50K Instagram followers, several have over 100K and some have close to 1M.

I think this project will expose tens of thousands of people to the hobby and several will be converted; its a numbers game.

When it comes to true art, print runs are minuscule on the global scale.

I'm all for the huge PR. All my early cards keep moving on up in value.

I bought like 3 of Jackie Robinson Mister Cartoon. I don't care if they go up in value. The relevance of that player and the artist is enough for me.

I'm willing to do the work, but in case someone has a quick answer since I can't research right now, which artist should I look forward to? I'm super late to the party, but I think I'll pick up some of them anyway.

Hey John,

Best advice I can give is go to the archives and see what the different artists offer and whose style you like the best and go from there. I think that now that everyone is aware, there may not be any steals moving forward so just pick the artist whose style you like best and grab his/her cards. There really is something there for everyone's taste as there are 20 different artists doing all 20 cards.

Fantastic, that's what I was looking for actually. Definitely some artists that catch my eye more than others. I know I'm not gonna get rich from those at this point. ;-)

Thanks!

The easiest way is to check out their Instagram. baseline your decision from there. For example, Mister cartoon and King Saladeen I like so i only really buy theirs.
