Canucks/Messier arbitration

What is also lost in all this is what McCaw's intention was by giving Messier a contract with a clause where Messier would get more money based on the value of the team after his contract ended.

If I read between the lines correctly, McCaw had intended to sell the team for a profit after buying it from Griffiths. Bringing in Messier would increase the "value" or "marketability" of the team which could be sold for more money, hence the clause in Messier's contract.

Basically, Messier gets a commission. The higher McCaw is able to sell the team, the more money Messier gets. Messier's contract ended in 2002, but he got bought out earlier. McCaw sold 50% of the team in 2004, probably hoping that the deferred payment would be stuck with the Aquilini's too. The Aquilini's could try to take McCaw to court to make him pay the "commission" since it was owed to Messier before the sale of the team, but that will take some time and cost money too.

Such dirty owners in the NHL.

It was directed at the OP who tends to run his mouth a little too much. I can respect an honest discussion minus the nonsensical bashing.

Aw yes... yet another post where he doesn't answer the only question I asked him.

Instead of making subtle derogatory remarks about me, man up, answer my question. It's not that hard to do; you only have to type two digits. I'm 99.9% sure the first one will be a '2.' Pretty sure the second one will be between 4 and 8. We'll go from there.

On another related note, the Nucks also brought in Mogilny at the same time to take the team to the next level....And the Rags signed his former aging centermen LaFontaine....

Mogilny was brought in because of his goal scoring prowess and plus he had played with Bure in junior in Russia. So Canuck fans were drooling over the dream of watching those 2 elite goal scorers light it up. Turns out, neither wanted to give up the puck and be 2nd fiddle to the other. When it was apparent that Bure was the darling, Mogilny mailed it in.

A client of mine had a close friend who knew Mogilny well. Basically Mogilny had told him that he had made enough money for his children's children, and that's all that mattered.

We don't know why Bure demand out either. Somehow management/ownership bungled that too. It did coincide with Messier coming to town. Not sure if Bure got his panties in a bunch because he wasn't "the star attraction" in the eyes of ownership. Who knows? Maybe Messier whispered something in Bure's ears basically saying that he's under appreciated. I'm just speculating (so don't take me serious on those comments.)

I'm curious to see where your arguement is going on this as I obviously fall into that range.

This....

Ive never heard of anyone doing this. Period. I mean it is a pretty smart clause for someone who probably already has plenty of money.

Even still, does this mean the Nucks actually made money off the deal therefore making this argument of ruining the franchise null and void???

Orca- Considering I have stated my age a few times before, Im sure you spent, or wasted, some time searching for it. Irrespective of that, respond to the facts, presented by either side, and we'll go from there kid.

I'm not sure if what the details of the clause were or what percentage. The judge decided the settlement amount.

There are many factors that contribute to the value of the team. There are other factors that affect the value too such as the the CAN$ vs US$, stronger corporate marketing, rabid loyal fans, etc. So it's hard to say exactly what value Messier brought to the franchise. Plus since Messier was bought out 2 years earlier, was it based on the value when he was bought out or when his original contract was set to expire? Plus fans were coming in droves to see Bure, not Messier. Plus add in Mogilny, the emergence of Naslund, etc. So it is not exclusively Messier that brought value to the team. He was the only one that had it in his contract that he could get paid for it.

Plus because Aquilini paid $150 mil for 50% share in 2004 would have most likely been used as a benchmark. But we're not sure if he paid a premium or market value for that 50%. Plus the price for 50% doesn't mean that 100% is necessarily $300 mil, because you're getting into some serious dollars then. Plus Forbes only now lists the value of the Canucks as $300 mil.

As for ruining the franchise (I don't think anyone specifically said that, but rather he destroyed the team locker room).

Again 2 separate issues. On ice and off ice. Since Messier got the $6 mil, the judge must of concluded that he had some contribution to the increase in the value of the team. Again, nobody is saying he doesn't deserve it legally. It was in his contract and the numbers can be argued to support his grievance.

However, on ice, he ruined the team at the time with help from Keenan. Again, it was ownership's decision, purely motivated to inflate value to get a buyer, which they did.

As I mentioned before, the silver lining in all this is that we sucked so bad that we got the Sedins. So Messier helped the franchise by making sure we sucked bad enough to get elite prospects in the draft, instead of being a perennial mediocre team and getting borderline future NHLers. But getting the Sedins should be credited to Burke instead since he actually made the trade to draft them both.
