Crosby vs. McDavid

Hey folks,

after a longer break from hockey cards I would like to treat myself to one nice card for Christmas this year

I am looking to spend in the 1k range (with some wiggle room up and down)

I have two questions for the (in my opinion) best hockey-crowd on the internet

1) Would you pick up a Crosby or a McDavid?

2) Which card would you go for in my price range?

For me, Crosby is a beast who, for now, is still the face of the league. Mcdavid is amazing but still a lot of hype (might be eating my words soon). If you're finding mcdavid and Crosby cards that are selling for the same price-ish, I'd generally go for Crosby.

For 1k range I might suggest a fwa 9.5 of Crosby. Such a classic card and honestly one of the nicest designs.

Crosby is a proven superstar who will go down as a legend, McDavid (although will probably have an amazing career) still has to prove himself. I'd go Sid.
 
Buy 1 of each in the $500 range!

If it is truly only 1 card you want, I have to agree with the above. Connor is amazing, but Sid is still King for now!
 
I'd go with one of these Sidney Crosby Young Guns:

1) A PSA 10 (on eBay for between $725 to upwards to $1000 - kind of average range, though I did see one sell for about $625 and another for $2000). So for $750 to $800 easy you can have one of these. Probably his most iconic and classic rookie is his Young Guns.

2) A BGS 10 (saw one sell for about $1200 recently).

3) A BGS 9.5 (from about $550 to $700 depending on the subgrades - the better the subgrades, the more you'll pay) are also great. If you look at recent sales most are selling close to $700. Looking at prices from a few years ago, in recent months these have gone up significantly.

Best bang for your buck might be the BGS 10 if you can find one for around $1200. But any of the three would be good if you're looking for one card.

Crosby for sure if it has to be between those two. If you don't have one I might go after a OPC Gretzky with a good PSA grade on it.

Mother of Jesus! Did not know that a PSA 10 YG Sid had jumped so much :whatthehell:

I would go for a PSA 10 Crosby as well. Like it's been said, it is an iconic card.
 
If it was my money I would try to buy a Crosby Future Watch auto. As much as I love McDavid, Crosby has already proven himself with a Hall of Fame career and he's still in his prime. Cups, Gold medals, a mantle full of trophies, ridiculous skill and who knows what more to come.

McDavid will have his share of greatness also, one would think very soon the way he's been playing this season, but for the time being Crosby is still the king.

Ha. Yeah it's crazy if you look at Sid's YG prices right now. Prices have jumped bigtime just in the months of October and November.

I like the invest in both sentiment here but I too will go with the majority and say I'd put all the funds into Crosby for all the aforementioned reasons. Basically his stellar resume has locked up his place in the game; he's a sure fire, first ballot HHOFer and nothing can take that away. Maybe in 10 years we will say the same about McDavid but investing in a sure thing is a very rare occurrence these days with regard to sports cards.

McDavid Hype? Do you even watach hockey.
 
I'm more of a sure thing guy - so I'd look to purchase a Crosby FWA and wouldn't even think twice. If Connor sustains another injury (knock on wood it doesn't happen. Kid is a stud.) Who knows what the future holds for him after that. Whereas Crosby is the proven guy who has won immensely at every level he has played. Sign me up for a proven commodity like that.
 
Agree with the Crosby sentiment. But as I already own his rookie cards that I coveted, I would next focus my wants on McDavid (YG, SPA).
 
I'm going to go against the grain just because I can....

McDavid MIGHT be at the ground floor with some of his releases (I have ZERO confidence in his Young Guns RC, so don't even compare the two there). Crosby's Young Guns RC was a $300 card when it came out at now raw copies can be had for about the same. It's the grading that amps up the pricing.

I would almost rather take a chance on McDavid and hope that his Premier, Ultimate or one of the others goes for a ride as he improves (hopefully). The Cup will be priced in such a stupid manner and the odds of hitting one will be exponentially as silly. My hope is that the ridiculous price and far reach of people owning a Cup RC will drive the prices of all other releases upward.

That being said, the safe bet is a Crosby RC (for $1,000 I would go for his Ultimate RC) but for potential, I'd go McDavid.

I like what you said, yes Sid young guns were 250 or so at launch, but after Ovi won the cAlder, you could get them for $100. That's when the phrase sidiots was going around for folk that dropped a ton in his stuff. Now with cups Olympic gold etc they have climbed back up.

I would avoid mc davids young gun as there were so many made its hard to figure out where they will end up. Numbered stuff has a higher ceiling.

Question is collecting what you you like? What is your risk level. I think mcdavids cards have more upside but absolutely more risk.

Crosby no question, and if you can find one i'd go for his Ultimate RC, my fav and feel it is his 2nd best card next to his cup RC.
