Cup Faker Alert: Has Kenny Ao resurfaced (The Infamous Patch Faker)???

Kenny Ao is a patch faker? I thought he was a good trader/ upstanding member here? When did this happen?

About a year now...his reputation is fecal here in Toronto and there are people still looking for him. He's staying low, although he was at The National in Cleveland.

I'm surprised he's back at it again.

REALLY??

As far as I know, NO ONE has done anything to him.....not UD, not the RCMP, not the NHLPA...and appearantly not Ebay......

I didn't know that he was in Cleveland......did anyone DO anything TO HIM??....did anyone even SAY anything to him??.....ya, I thought so.....big surprise.

It's sad to say, but he will keep re-surfacing....just because he can.....just like numerous other people in this city....and anyone in the GTA knows specifically who I'm talking about.....

Just my two cents....

Joe

Not to alarm you...but I see YOU actually bought a Perry card from Frozenfour67 recently (unless someone else on Ebay is also scandalz8hlx). That might explain the nice patch IF it has one (he removed the picture from Ebay).

^^^ OOPS...forgot to quote. Was suppose to quote scandalz8hlx ^^^

I'm a little new to this whole situation, but how do you know this seller is selling fake patches? I looked at the auctions and I'm a but clueless.

Lastly, How do you tell patches are fake and real?!?!

It's all about serial number. These guys are buying ugly patches and are putting some awesome patch in it. If you are the guy who sold the card, you know the serial number and when it shows on ebay with the same serial number BUT with a sick patch ... you got a patch faker.

Yikes I thought the patches were built into the card and you couldn't remove it, I guess I'm a little naive as a new collector. Does anyone have the original scans of the cards listed? I would love to see the cards before and after.

Although this situation is sticky, I admit it's interesting.

For those of you that are newer to the hobby or to the site - as you can probably guess - this is a pretty big deal and something that you should certainly be aware of. The crew here at HI do a great job of sniffing out these clowns and outing them on here, other sites and through the magazine.

I recommend paying close attention to the cards you are buying through online channels and the old adage plays pretty well here - if it sounds or looks too good to be true, well it most likely is.

Have a look through this site as they have done a great job of flagging some of the major busts but keep an eye out as well - there is a lot of information out there from player collectors and hobbyists.

Just an FYI - the site above is mine but I have not maintained it for two years. There were too many fake patch reports coming in and I simply did not have time to evaluate them all myself. I still pay the hosting fees and keep it alive since it was a fun project and still provides some important information.

Yeah I already know....and I bought 2 cards from Parkhurst1952 as well.:badmood:

Add another eBay handle to the list:
nhlcollection2009

That means he has three active accounts right now!!!!!!!! And if you notice, they're all the essentially the same type. FrozenFour67, Parkhurst1952 and now nhlcollection2009.

Kenny is getting worse at covering is tracks, although before I started to put all of this together I bought a card from that guy as well!! This is getting insane. :|

Until there are real consequences for his actions, i.e. jail time or monetary loss, this will continue to happen. There is a reason why some times people are made an "example" of...

Well, not really...but kinda. I'm surprised simply because of all of the hot air being blown around. "I'm going to do this", "I'm going to do that" and nothing is being done. He seemed to take a break and when he saw the coast was clear, he went right back at it again.

Personally, I don't even care any more. He's been given the ability to continue to do it and the people who have the money to do anything about it (cough*Upper Deck*cough) isn't.

I know not to buy anything from him, the handful of people here know not to buy anything from him (except the few in this thread who aren't sure and actually might buy something from him) but the masses don't and that seems to be fine with everyone else. Wake me when the manufacturer steps in the room.

That's the only attitude we can take right now until UD steps upto the plate but what will it take? Is this story popular on the other collecting sites as well? As we all know this is getting way out of hand and he seems to be getting worse b/c he knows he can get away with it. He seems to be involving other people as well. Why doesn't sometime trace the ip addresses of those ebay accounts?

Well said.....

It's a double edged sword. This shouldn't be viewed as UD's fault and that therefore they should provide (read: pay for the) solution. If they do then the costs will be transferred onto the consumer and we'll all be blaming UD for not providing enough value in their breaks. While we should expect UD, ITG, and all manufacturers to do what they can to ensure integrity in this hobby, we should also pay heed to the fact that they aren't the criminals.

As I make this statement, I also realize I'm not providing a any solutions that are win-win. To be honest, I don't know what the best solution is. First thing that comes to mind is that if there were a lot less product releases then the hobby as a whole can keep track of what's real and what's not a heck of a lot easier. Therefore, these fakers would see that there is less opportunity to make money by scamming.

what was the proposed solution when his whole operation was revealed? was there a resolution, albeit a temporary one that had him go into hiding?

Hey Eugene,

If I remember correctly there was no resolution that was agreed upon when he was initially exposed. There was simply that original thread and I am guessing he was told about that and thus went into hiding. I think I read that he showed up at the National in Cleveland, but that was last time he was spotted anywhere.

I have a friend who is pretty high up in a reputable "police organization" - would it be helpful if I emailed him a summary of what has gone on here to find out what we as concerned collectors can do?

From what I gather, the guy was caught once, big time, and nothing happened, disappeared for awhile and has now returned, up to his old tricks.

I need to revisit the old thread to find the concrete proof to present.

Guys get jailed, fined and lives are ruined over fraud and tampering all the time - this moron is playing us for fools and we don't need to sit here and worry about the authenticity of cards we see at auction. I say it is time for a visit from an angry mob with some kind of a warrant/permit to investigate his "shop".

^ I think something has to be done, but apparently his parents are rich and I doubt that he will serve any jail time and he'll be out and about doing what he does best even if any legal action was enforced.
