DC Comics - The New 52

Read Action #2 a couple days ago myself. I'm getting hooked too.

Loved his first appearance in the reboot on the last page of Justice League #1 when he and Batman encounter each other for the first time... "So.. what can you do?" with his fists clenched and ready to just kick ***. I think we're going to see a more balanced Superman. A good guy overall, but not without character flaws and a bit rough around the edges at times.

DC announced that Andy Kubert will handle art for issues 5 & 6 for Action Comics; Rags resumes as of issue 7. The news surrounding this title keeps getting better.

As a lapsed reader getting back into comics and plain old having fun, I don't know what that good news means. :) But good news is good news! :)

So which second issues are you picking up today?

Batman and Robin and Batwoman for sure.

I wonder what Marvel thinks of all this and if they have even the slightest inclination to reboot even 1 of their longstanding titles.

I had to laugh - I recently recovered my teenage stash of comics and have been slowly reading through the 3000 comics I have packed away... I was reading a copy of Classic X-MEn ( a reprint series of X-Men) that was printed mid... 90's? In it, Madelyne Pryor wakes up from a nightmare, blah blah blah and Cyclops, in consoling her mentions that Jean Grey died (the first time), September 1, 1980... yep... 31 years ago...

And yet no one has aged much in the Marvel universe, and in some cases, they've reverted (cripes, I just read Peter and MJ's marriage comic and here they are now, 27? years later, going back to acting and pretending like they are young)

I know it's tough the publishing frequency, and everything else, but I would have liked it if Marvel would have kept closer with changing times, and let the characters grow old for crying out loud.

But a Marvel reboot... hehehe... I've just been reading some of the Heroes Reborn stuff from after Onslaught... that was AWFUL!

All I'm saying, I wish they could resolve the time issue, but I have no idea how you would do it!

As for the DC reboot - I've never read DC deeply, so... maybe this would be a good time to start.

Cory, there is actually a "good" reason why Peter and MJ are acting 'young' right now but I'm on my iPhone and it's way to long to type. I'll geek out on you tomorrow lol but basically Mephisto reverted everything back in time to before their marriage. He altered everything.

/me continues to bang head against the desk regarding this.

Yeah, but Spider Man has been around for 60 years, and Aunt May still ain't dead... well in the main universe anyway... I don't know about the others...

:)

Don't get me wrong, I still enjoy reading them, it's just odd to suspend the march of time... yet the background is updated ie popular culture references change and are current, but the people don't age.

In that regard, it's not materially different from Archie.

I'm reading some of the #2s in the DCU rebootening. Action remains well-written, as does Animal Man and Green Lantern. Swamp Thing is on shaky ground already. The rest...I won't be buying any longer. Just...no. It also seems clear that the reboot applies to everything OTHER than Batman and GL - those two title families are basically continuing from where they left off before the Event, and everything else is back to square one.

Wasn't JLA #2 supposed to come out by now? I hope Jim Lee doesn't revert back to his Image deadline submission dates.

I didn't buy Swamp Thing #1 when it was first released, but heard so many good reviews about the writing that I picked up #1 and #2. But I'm done with it already.

GL is continuing where they left off, in a sense, but at the same time it's written in a manner that is a new beginning so a new reader can easily jump into it. I'd say that's the same for the Batman titles, especially Batman and Robin.

I'm having fun with this relaunch, but puzzled as to how I can get into Marvel...

Marvel's a mess if you're trying to look for a starting point. But the one Marvel title that I've picked up recently is the new Ultimate Spider-Man. I highly recommend it.

If you want to reconnect with Marvel, I suggest buying a digital comic subsciption to their archives. For basically $60 for the year, you can access about 10000 different comics. There are some gaps in runs, but for just having some reading material and getting up to speed on where things are (most of them are current to within a year), I've found it enjoyable.

That's a pretty good idea, Cory!

Last night, while picking up a few of the new 52 I was missing, I grabbed a bunch of new Wolverines. I think they're up to #18 right now? I had already grabbed the trade Wolverine: Goes To Hell (collecting #1-5) which I loved. So last night I picked up #6-14 for 50% off sticker price. Always was a Wolverine fan so I'm gonna enjoy this.

Captain America #3 has just released. I had previously picked up #1 and it was definitely written to easily be jumped in on so last night I grabbed #2 and #3.

What's most daunting is my fave Marvel superhero Spidey... where to begin?!

Back to DC...

Between Action Comics and Superman, I am really loving how they're written and drawn! Especially Action was like reading a roller coaster ride with fast paced action but coupled with a great storyline (and build up)!

Detective Comics is just as awesome and while I felt lukewarm about Batman & Robin #1 after reading #2, I'm starting to think that Damian Wayne as Robin (Bruce's son with a dark upbringing and an instinct to kill) is going to become a great story.

I'm also enjoying the GL titles. I didn't grow up reading much GL except when part of a team. So far I'm finding them kinda fun.

My pull list is currently pretty long, but I know it'll be narrowed down after a few more issues.

That's a hell of a good suggestion Cory. There's also Comixology.

If you haven't read All-Star Batman and Robin, it's entertaining as hell. Lots of criticism, but the characterization is fantastic. We all acknowledge that Batman is nuts, easily on par with any of the villains he combats. Miller simply refuses to whitewash that.

I'm diggin' Action Comics and Superman. Might stick to those so I don't build a giant stockpile of comics. That's the last thing I need is another collection of something.

Don't overlook Justice League, if you're diggin' Supes... at least don't overlook it right now as it introduces Superman into the new DCU to other heroes. Right now Batman and Superman are squaring off against each other having never met each other before.

Comixology. Slightly cheaper (different topic for another time...) and no reams of paper cluttering the place. This is what I'm using for a whole schwack of things I wanna follow but don't care to track down in actual print.

That's actually pretty cool...I'm going to have to take a better look at it.

Went to 1,000,000 Comix on Yonge St this week...the place was INSANE with the amount of people buying this stuff. Even the back issues are garnering a pretty high premium.

Might also have to give Justice League a looksee.
