A bit out there, but it gets me thinking about another forgotten special - Rendezvous '87.

Seriously!!!!! I guess it would be the 20% of us ( set collectors) complaining. And yes we open multiple boxes. And no we don't consider it a waste of our money.
 
Yea the base set would have been cool because it would have been a lot less product compared to upper deck base. I would have bought a box or two just for that and I do not buy boxes. Oh well.

I will be picking up some singles.
 
I don't know about this....if this product remains the same price as say ITG 1972 TYIH then it'll be a sure fire winner...but if it's double or more in price then ITG'72 as it's looking right now. ITG just screwed this product....

I sold thru a boat load of ITG 1972 because people LOVED the base set and the concept of the entire product(70's)....but with this configeration ITG just out priced 75% or more of my customers who were looking forward to this product. I don't think I've ever been this disappointed with an ITG release, not to mention all my customers who won't touch it now...

I hate ranting....BUT YOU DON'T MESS WITH A GOOD THING ITG!

ITG 1972 sold out long ago...and I have'nt seen a sealed box for sale in some time now....this stuff is gonna be floating around for "decades"....

I too am sorry to hear that this set will not be in it's originally discussed format.
I'm not complaining because ITG listens to collectors on a regular basis, it's just that a base set of 150 was planned and somewhere along the road had to be scrapped in favour of the final configuration. I enjoyed 1972, I don't bust a lot of box's but I did open quite a few from that set and was hoping for a similar situation with 1980. That being said,I'll still buy ITG products as they strive to please the collector and succeed more often than not.

And while the Devils of the 80's may not have been worth a quality GU or auto piece, they would have made for a memorable team set......
 
The initial autograph checklist is being posted this week. There will be more added when they are received but I think you will find the initial list impressive.

I, too, am disappointed with the loss of the base set and I was planning on busting quite a bit of this product. I was primarily drawn to it for the nostalgia-factor. I haven't gotten to bust a lot this year and am making more and more decisions about how to spend my money. I was really looking forward to this one, especially since I am also working on the 100 Years of Collecting inserts and plan on putting a set together of the Miracle on Ice autos. I was hoping to be able to sell/trade my extras to piece together the sets I wanted (and I really just prefer to bust ITG products)...

I understand what ITG is trying to do by pleasing collectors (and I applaud them for it) and I understand what, I think, you mean by your comments [selling base is harder and less rewarding than selling inserts and hits], but 'collectors' from the 80's didn't need 3 autos and 3 game-used inserts in every pack. Aside from that, set collectors (which I am definitely one) are a passive group in the hobby - more of us probably should have let Dr. Price know how excited we were to see a nostalgic base set of 80's players (I was secretly hoping to see an 80-81 or 84-85 knock-off myself to go along with the 71-72 inspired 1972: Year in Hockey set).

In my opinion (and for my money), packaging an '80s' set in modern garb reduces its impact and eliminates the nostalgia. An 80's Rookies insert set sans a base set is no different than 'Rookie Retrospectives' or 'Rookie Tributes' or similar subsets found in any number of more recent products (from other manufacturers). I can find 'old' pictures of 80s-era players in other products, too. Turning this product into 'Superlative junior', though, means that I will likely just pick up the singles I want rather than throw a ton of money at busting it. If I want Superlative, I'll buy Superlative.

I'm still looking forward to this product, just in a different way now...

I understand that there are many base set collectors out ther ebut let's be honest, they sell for crap. Wax busters obviously asked ITG to make this release with more "value" in the break forcing Dr Price to add "hits". In doing so, something must be removed to keep costs down. He opted for the least demanded part of the set: the base. I don't know how many times I heard people complain about the base sets in UM, Superlative, etc. Now that he takes the base out, people are up in arms about it. Damned if you do I guess...

I think you are making the point here even though your arguing against it. I am a set builder and only buy wax for sets. There is no point in having base in a set such as superlative and UM that sells for 100+ a pack or more in the case of superlative. But for what (I thought anyway) was a mid level product the base does have value because it is possible to build the sets. I think ITG completely missed the point of a retro set by making it just another version of UM or superlative, and i'm sure at a similar price point per package. While the idea of the set is good, I'm sure I'll avoid it.

This is what I'm waiting for. I'm disappointed to see there's no base set (though I admit I wouldn't have collected it because I'm not a base set collector, but know plenty of people that are) but if you have Tanti in a Canucks memorabilia set, I'm holding hope he might be in the autograph set since he's only got one other auto out there right now.

Please stop making assumptions. Not everyone sells their base sets. As et like this I build through box breaks and trades, and then store in a binder. Not very profitable, but a very nice way to collect. Also, when '72 series first came out, you could get $40 bucks for a base set.

I'm not going to argue with you - base cards/sets do sell for crap and I understand why case-breakers don't care for them, but they're fun to collect (to those of us who do) and a nice 'bonus' to buying a box of 'hits' sometimes. I didn't envision this release to be on par with UM or Superlative and thought it was more classed with BTP or H&P or 1972, so I had never really thought about it in those terms. Like I said, I was looking for a nostalgic base set like 1972: Year in Hockey to build and from the original discussion of this product, that's what I was anticipating. I chose Decades over BTP and now, the Decades I was expecting isn't there. Disappointed, but not really 'up-in-arms'.

I will whole-heartedly agree with you, though, manufacturers will consistently find themselves in 'no-win', damned if you do or don't situations and Dr. Price even admitted it himself a couple pages back that he "can't please everyone." Produce a product with the base and risk a lower perceived value on hits or complaints of a 'diluted' product frustrating all the case busters looking to sell their breaks... Produce a product without base cards and risk the complaints of 'swingy' busts by the 'box-or-two' collectors as well as low-to-no interest in boxes/packs from base set collectors... Not an easy decision to be sure and I sure don't envy Dr. Price for the position he's put in with decisions like that, but I can really appreciate that he's at least willing to listen to us and help us understand his process. He said collectors have emailed/pm'ed him that they wanted a product with more hits; I'm happy he listened. I'm just not in that group of collectors this time.

Basically what I see ITG doing here is dropping a "box" to a "pack". The only difference is no base cards which will save in printing costs and packaging. So, we will be getting 3 autos, 3 memorabilia and 3 inserts in a pack for the exact same price as a full box would have cost. Had they have gone the "box" route, we'd be getting base plus perhaps 2 autos, 2 memorabilia & 3 inserts for the same price. Which has more value? I say the pack form. Thoughts?

I'm not making assumptions, I'm telling the truth. Base sets don't sell well. Ask any large wax breaker and they will tell you the same thing. Sure, upon first release you might get $30-$40 on a set or 2 but within a week or so, they will sell for $10. Not even worth the time it takes to sort the cards and put the sets together
