Eichel's Cup Rookie

Sorry Jeremy and others.

If it is not Autographed it loses the 'allure' of all of the other Cup Rookies behind it.

Best bet is to just not have it .
I know it sounds stupid - but all of the past product were either RAP $#/99, or for lesser RC's (at first) #/249. best not to ruin the product and show your weakness by having a different variable.

That doesn't make sense. How can it lose allure of other cards? Allure is specific to the object that possesses it.

Nobody is going to start blowing out their Crosby, Ovechkin, Price, Toews, Kane, Stamkos, Tavares, Hall, MacKinnon and Gaudreau (for good measure) etc. Cup ARP's because Eichel's doesn't have an auto. No one will love or pursue those cards any less. And you can bet it wouldn't impact the McDavid Cup RC either. Or Auston Matthews and every one else that comes in behind/after Eichel.

If UD doesn't want to capitalize at all on Eichel in Cup then sure the best bet (albeit a terrible one) is to just not have it. But UD won't leave that on the table. They will do what they can to complete on Eichel and making his Cup RC an SP /99 is the best way for them to do that. It is a great reactionary move to the Eichel exclusive.

In addition, it isn't about "showing their weakness" like in poker where no one else knows your cards. Everyone knows that UD can't do Eichel autos. Not having him in there wouldn't fool anyone.

It is similar to The Cup Gold Parallel Auto Patches in recent years. Almost all the cards have patches but the Bobby Orr never has. They still made the card. They "show'd their weakness" as you put it. Why wouldn't they do it here with a player who is a major force in the hobby. My bet is that they do the same thing with Eichel as they did with Orr - work with what they are able to produce. And I think it's the right move.

I'm thinking you might have misread/misunderstood what he meant. He meant an Eichel patch /99 would not have the same allure that say, a Crosby Auto/Patch /99 has, specifically because of the lack of autograph.

Is there any chance that Upper Deck could secure a deal with Leaf to have Eichel sign for a few of their releases? Leaf let Damian Lillard sign for four Panini rookie releases a few years ago, what's to prevent the same if UD floats enough money in a proposal?

Leaf has commented on this in the past. They said that they approached UD with the idea of exchanging some Eichel Autos for McDavid Autos and UD wanted no part of it. Seems the collectors are the ones that get jipped most in that situation.

As far as the Eichel Cup RC..... I think it would be best to do like the Orr mentioned above. Limited /99 since he is easily in the top 5 or 6 Rookies this year and a nice Foil Sabres Logo where the signature would normally go. The lower print run makes it rarer, with the proper design it will fit nicely into the set and be a card that has some "history" as to why it was created that way in the future.

I think that is definitely obvious. Take the auto off any key Cup RC /99 and it would likely be worth less.

I didn't read it that way, perhaps suitman will clarify.

With Trilogy, they did make the full slate of rookie cards. Just the auto variants came with no auto. So they could do the same for the other releases.

I don't see a need for an oversized patch here. Make the card exactly like the other /99 RCs but with no auto. I think set collectors would prefer that

Another option would be to get the card signed by an old-timer, maybe the Great One?

So, it would be an autographed patch, with a patch of Eichel and a Gretzky auto, with the regular design.

Thank you cygnusx1 - that is exactly what I meant.

Sometimes while I post at work I go to quick for my own good.

Jeremy - by allure I meant the product as a whole, all the rookies were either RAP #/99, RAP #/249 or Rookie Auto #/249 (I think in 2014 they did do 2 Rookie Non-Auto Patch #/249). But to have such an important player that is obviously a SP (#/99) candidate without an Autograph - takes away from the brand and most certainly will disappoint the set collectors..... and they truly drive this product to the height and price point that it has maintained.

I do the sets every year and I agree with you , but its very disappointing, actually sucks :(

What would be nice is if UD came up with something different to do for the Eichel card. Maybe use multiple pieces of Memorabilia or some other neat idea. It's not an auto, and that sucks but they could certainly come up with something that would be well received by the hobby.

eichel cup rookie for now has no auto and I'm pretty sure it will be like that unless theres a mystery redemption and if brian grey doesn't prolong the rights to eichel......... The only way UD can make the cup card more valuable than any other non auto patch card ( in rookie year) is to make the eichel /99 all 3-4 plus colours and have the memorabilia be game used

I'm with the people saying it should be GAME USED and out of /99.

I think game used material will boost it knowing their is no signature allowed. People will see UD made the effort to make it the best card they could with the resources they had.

This is ironic as many times in the past that has been the mantra of UTG and Leaf, to do all they could to deliver the best cards possible with no licensing.

As big a fan as I am of their products, UD has gotten lazy here and there so it would be awesome to see them got the extra mile for collectors and secure an Eichel gamer for this product. Eichel is a generational talent, make no mistake about it, this guy has to be in all products just like McDavid. I spoke with a person who works with the Blackhawks recently and he told me the gap between McDavid and Eichel is as slim as any he has seen between two highly touted rookies following the previous summers draft. Eichel WILL be the face of USA hockey soon with Patrick Kane (and Dylan Larkin!) and Buffalo will be a great team because of him.

I also think differentiating the card a bit from the other /99's may be helpful. Maybe the same design and patch window size on the /99 version, but a foil color variance around the patch window with a small "GAME-USED" stamped underneath the window? And maybe in addition an oversized version of the gold patch parallel /15?

In the end UD really SHOULD go the extra mile and hopefully will come up with something brilliant to circumvent the situation.

I think we're overthinking (or over hoping this), I think it'll just be a standard non-auto'd base RC numbered to /199 or /249 or whatever the non-auto'd ones are usually numbered to. I can't see them breaking the Cup mold and creating a whole new type of RC card just for one player, even if it is a generational guy like Eichel.

They can't get his auto, it sucks but we just have to accept it. Even a standard non-auto Eichel will sell well from The Cup.
