US Shippers that use Ebay - Do you know anything about the Global Shipping Program?

So I was reading some ebay announcements Attention sellers: Global Shipping Program to include 8 additional countries! and thought to myself, what in the heck is this??

So I did some research and what I found not only blew my mind, but made me beyond excited to ship internationally again! I wanted to get everyone's opinion on this option from Ebay. So from what I understand, I no longer have to charge $8 to ship internationally again, I only have to ship to a Domestic Ebay shipment center for the cost of a Domestic package. They then cover the shipping to Canada along with the customs fees and whatnot. They state they also will now cover damaged/lost goods that get lost in transit from the shipping center to the international buyer. As a seller, I am ONLY responsible for shipping to the domestic shipping center. Does anyone see a downside to this? I would love to hear from all the US sellers in the hobby that were like me and became FURIOUS that USPS now charged our Canadian friends almost $7 to get a card to them. Thanks in advance!

yeah it is not going to work, I bought a card yesterday for $90 with this new shipping method The buyer(me) is charged an import charge of 21$ along with a shipping charge of 17$. Trying to work something out with the seller.

As I dug up some info on it, Sports cards are in the ineligible category per Ebay

Item Eligibility. Not all listings appearing on eBay.com are eligible for the Program. Items that are being offered to you by your Seller through the Program, and which appear to be eligible for the Program based on their listing description, are so designated within the GSP Item listing. eBay reserves the right at any time, in its sole discretion, with or without notice to you, to alter or amend the eligibility requirements for items under the Program, including, but not limited to, limits on the number, type, category, and/or value of items and/or transactions. Item eligibility requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:
Item Location. Only items physically located in the United States are eligible for the Program.
Item Listing Site. Only items listed by Sellers on eBay.com are eligible for the Program.
Ineligible Categories. Items listed by Sellers in the following eBay.com categories are ineligible for the Program:
Antiques
Art
Business & Industrial (excluding certain items listed within the sub-category Office)
Coins & Paper Money (excluding Publications & Supplies)
eBay Motors (excluding certain Parts & Accessories)
Gift cards & Coupons
Pottery & Glass
Real Estate

Sports Memorabilia, Cards, & Fan Shop (excluding Fan Apparel & Souvenirs)

The big problem with this one is that sellers are not going to want to send the card without tracking to the facility if its a 70$ or $80 or more and buyers will not want to pay for S & H twice with a huge markup on the EbayGS side of it
 
Im not sure I would trust sending something to a place run by ebay. Godo chance they will lose it, then blame you and refund the buyer.
 
I have walked away from every auction that offers that "service". I refuse to purchase items that are being sold under that program, whether they're sports cards or anything else. The fees passed onto the buyer are astronomical and I am not paying extra fees to an entity that has nothing to do with the importation of my product. I'll take my chances with the postal carriers and CBSA, thank you very much.

Mike's post above is a prime example. He was charged $38 extra on a $90 purchase. That is LUDICROUS. Even with a $17 s/h charge, on the off chance he was dinged for taxes it would have only been about $11 extra ($8 brokerage fee and about $3.00 in GST).

Exactly. The fees being charged to buyers make the Clowns in Brown look generous.

Thanks to everyone for their feedback! I really appriciate the insight from you guys above all of the other Ebay Jr. sellers I have seen out there. I will be avoiding this program and sticking with the norm!
 
UPS has a bad name in Canada for their brokerage fees - doesn't mean they are a bad company. All my dealings with them have gone swimmingly including a picture that was not insured and smashed during delivery that they quickly covered even though there was no coverage purchased.

This shipping service may not work out but the new delivery confirmation via USPS may help a bit - I haven't had too many Canadian buyers since the giant spike in January but the packages now have a tracking/DC feature. None of the packages have reached their destinations yet (or the DC doesn't function properly) but it is something I am monitoring. Could at least put less of a need on Registered Mail service (which also went up to an additional $12.95).
 
Agreed. I bought a card a couple of weeks ago and paid $3 shipping from the US. Lo and behold, it arrived with tracking, and the number showed delivered in the My eBay page. I was astounded.

It functions, CP just doesn't seem to scan them.
 
eBay Global Payments/Import Charges

I bid (and won) an auction yesterday and went to pay when on my invoice there was a global imports charge (nearly $30). It stated that you pay this so you do not have to pay any future import charges (I;m in Canada, auction is USA). I had never seen this before and I asked the seller if it would be possible to remove the charge. I would pay the import charges IF the package got caught at the border. He said it was something set up by eBay and he could not remove it.

Anybody else here aware of this charge? What are your opinions?

On a side note, what would you be willing to pay for a Thornton BD RC?
 
Three words: No bloody way.

I would take my chances with Customs; 30 bucks US? Even with Customs' 'fee for doing their job', the GST/PST or HST on that would come nowhere near 30 bucks US, dependent on what you paid for the card. Still, I'd take my chances with Customs.

Looks like eBay is trying to rival UPS for ripping people off.

If I'm not mistaken, a seller can change an invoice. I've had sellers do that, but maybe he can't with this (no idea).

I bought my Thornton BD rookie for 150 CDN about 8 years ago. Not by auction though, at a show.

This is that new global shipping program where the seller sends the card to some company who then ships it to Canada. Unfortunately, to my knowledge, there is no way around the charges.
 
Wow, that is crazy. I would contact EBAY directly by phone and question it. I bought something from Canada this weekend and did not get charged an Import Fee, sounds a bit suspicious to me, especially if it's only for people who live in Canada.
 
I agree with Randy. I see that "Global Shipping Program" thing and run. Just a way for Ebay to make more money. I am still waiting for someone to explain how Ebay gets away with charging fees on shipping costs. ITS NOT A SERVICE THEY OFFER!!!!! How is that legal? I have no problem with fees for service (listings/final value fees) and I do understand they want to eliminate the $5 BIN with the $95 shipping but really, the way they are going about it CANNOT be legal. Anyone remember a few years back about the Paypal Class Action suit? Maybe Ebays shipping fees should be next? Just a thought and I am sure the legaleeze would be mind boggling.

Like it or not, I think were going to see a lot more of this stuff. Yes, its a way for EBay to make more money, but its also a way for EBay to lose a lot of their cliental. I know that I've turned away from auction(s) when I've seen that import charge on a seller's listing. As a buyer, you can pay close attention to a sellers listing under "shipping" charges and the fee should be made available to you there. Also, I do not believe that a seller can remove this "fee" as it is the buyers responsibility. I was able to grab this link. It might give a little better explanation:

I saw that information. It was the word 'estimated' on the import charge that made me think it was an optional charge. I guess you just learn the hard way sometimes.

So how will this change the hobby? eBay is what made chasing short print sets more fun and, to some extent, possible. Sounds like one less option for set builders :(
