Sort of was “eh, what’s the big deal, it happens” then read the reasoning behind the loss of the pick by the NHL. IMO, Vegas didn’t do their research. I am not 100% sure but doesn’t the contract a player signs state if there is a no-trade clause? If I do a search online, wouldn’t I find out that the Dadonov contract had a no-trade clause of some sort when he signed with Ottawa?

Oh, and the clincher, if I was in possession of the player and the contract, wouldn’t I be able to look that up in the contract?

My thinking here is: Vegas “said” they didn’t know about the no-trade clause that was in place. If the NHL can null & void a trade, they did their diligence in reviewing the contract and proceedings. It seems to me that Vegas skipped a step and said “oh, shttt” and passed the buck to Ottawa. Ottawa, not involved with the “next trade of a former player”, got blindsided and effed out of a 1st round pick in this ordeal.

A bit of tricky work. Vegas just won the shell game vs the Ottawa Senators and the NHL.

(On a side note: it was said that the Ducks was on the no-trade list of Dadonov when he was with Ottawa. The trade was attempted by Vegas and was blocked because Vegas didn’t request a new list, hence the previous list would be valid. If Vegas thought that the list was nulled once they had the contract, they would be right…new team, new list…but didn’t seek out the required list to make the previous null. The fault of the trade not happening is Vegas. There shouldn’t be any penalty unless Ottawa knowingly excluded the knowledge of the information which would be in the contract, which is hard to do since it is written in the contract. Also, if I knew a player was being traded, as a fan, there are sites out there that state “this player has a no-trade clause and these are the teams he has listed…” There are a few sites on Youtube that follow teams that state these for teams, fans or NHL in general, ESPN, too would be an OK source…NHL Network would spout this stuff for weeks.

I think that Ottawa should counter the ruling, stating that Vegas is at fault and should be compensated a 1st from Vegas in one of those years, also getting the previous ruling voided.)

Pretty good breakdown of the Dorian era in Ottawa. I seriously think that the Duchene trade to Ottawa was one of the worst trades they made and collapsed the Ottawa franchise a few years ago (Ottawa went on a horrible 9-10 game losing skid after the trade). But, the team would not be as it is if it didn’t happen. :foottap:

While I'm certainly no expert, I don't think I've ever heard of players' no-trade destinations being made public knowledge like you're stating.

As well, I'm not really seeing how it was Vegas' fault and not Ottawa's, the gist I've gotten from everything is that Dorion had the no-trade list and wasn't explicitly clear with it when talking to Vegas

Well, thinking about this for a while…Dorian really didn’t have to divulge a no-trade list to a team that would be on the trade list. The contract stated that the team would request from the player/player agent a list of no-trade teams. Once the contract is removed from Ottawa and in the hands of a team that wasn’t on the no-trade list, THAT team would then have to follow the contract rules which is to reach out to the player/player agent of a prospective trade of the player and request a list. If Vegas ignored this rule within the contract, they would be in violation. Once Ottawa traded the player, their requirements for that player and the contract is no longer required (unless they hold onto something like salary). Vegas, accepting the contract and player overlooked the clause within the contract that stated the requirement. Ottawa has no responsibility in providing any documentation that is the ownership of the discussions between Ottawa and their players in negotiations of trades or other.

Vegas basically cried to the NHL and the NHL bent over backwards for the new NHL darlings. Ottawa has been a thorn in the side of the NHL for so long that “it serves them right” to get penalized for “what they did”…the fact that they didn’t appeal means that the NHL had it in for them. It probably could have been worse. They may have stipulated to fire the GM and it would be “less” and they could pick the year. They could have gotten a penalty for multiple year drafts taken from them if not. Just guessing, but gets you thinking.

Also, it has been a few weeks. The NHL probably placed a blackball on Dorian.
