How do you get rid of you base cards?

Something similar. I give them as rewards to my students. They can buy them with school money.
 
I've got this weird way of unwinding. I enjoy sorting and building base sets. Probably stems from when I was a kid, and building a base set WAS cool!

My LCS used to have boxes of base for free. I'd grab them and make sets, and not even to re-sell. So I've got tons of base sets in my basement, just collecting dust.

Unfortunately (or fortunately for wife), my LCS closed up, and there are no more base sets to build. LOL.


My suggestion is to either build sets and try selling them on Ebay. Or break them up in team lots and sell by team.

Or if you think you'll get more bites by trading team lots for Capitals base lots, you can try that too.
 
When I had card shop to go to, I would open what I purchased there and then put all of the base cards aside for the next kid that came through the door and opened a pack of cards.

The owner of the shop was pretty good about it too since he got the glory of making some kids day. lol

On a side note not every kid at Ronald McDonald house is sick. You also have brothers and sisters too. Before we had our own kids me and the wife used to donate a ton of Christmas presents every year. So that one kid who is being treated there might have 3 siblings staying there as well. Anytime I'm gonna donate something the Ronald McDonald house is always my first stop.

Several? how many of these boxes have you gotten rid of? and how much wax do you bust to accumulate this many base? lol
 
1. "Double-bag" plastic bags from Wal-Mart, Target, whatever
2. Empty 3200-count boxes into said bags
3. Tie ends together
4. Take to dump

Several years ago I threw out roughly 35,000 cards in the above manner including close to 50 complete base sets. I live in rural North Carolina. No one within a 50-mile radius is the least interested in base cards.
 
I am one of the few here that actually like base.
I really enjoy organizing and sorting cards. I find it relaxing.
If shipping werent so much, I would gladly take all base.

I could never throw away base sets I would much rather hang onto them. I have given them away, but never tossed away. My step moms nephew wanted to get into collecting sports cards. I musta gave him at least 6-8 sets (from early 90s) and a bunch of partial sets so that he could try and finish his own. That was about 15+ years ago, and last I heard he still has them.
 
I have collected my fair share of base sets.... but honestly: the surplus base became a pain sometimes.

I have donated them to charity... I use them as packing supplies when selling or trading... but the bulk of them these days... they just got into the little can beside my desk, and that's the last I see of them.
 
I do not open much of anything as was stated above maybe the odd blaster from Wal-Mart if they have a sale on them. Any base I did have I would give the my daughters caregiver to give the kids.

Prior to that I did have a lot of old base from the 90-93 years that worked great for bonfires. I am sure I burned up some of those error Pro-Set cards before I knew about them. lol

A tad late on reading this thread...
I've always enjoyed - and still do, the base sets. Part of my childhood I never let go of I suppose. Call me weird, but I consider it "art"; the photography combined with the card designs. Plus, they (base cards) help with my online project. :)

I like putting together a base set too, but I'd still love to get rid of my duplicates. It was actually very exciting as a kid when I would see the newest card design for Topps baseball. Since there weren't releases year round, that's what we had to look forward too. :laugh:

But similar to the OP, I live in an area where if it's not an Orioles or Ravens card, no one has any interest at all. Hockey doesn't exist here. I'll do what I can to find a taker, but I suspect that at some point I'll just end up dumping a large amount in the trash, unfortunately. I hate doing it, but I don't really need 14 copies of Contenders base cards, and no one wants them. At some point they're only existing to take up space.

Invest in a fire pit, it worked well for me.

On a side note I finally figured out how to embed that video in a post.

 
I use to make up lots of 200 cards for kids on my sons hockey teams over the years. I secretly found out their favorite players and/or team and gave them at Christmas. Sadly he's 15 now and they don't care about cards.

I also use them to get autographs as I'm working on an all-time NHL auto collection
