Here is an email that was forward to me by a friend. Really too bad. The entire province worships Cleary and this is the second time a local was treated rudely by him. Its a long but interesting read.
Just got this from a friend, I left the name of the guy who wrote it on
the end. Really too bad, most NHL’ers I believe treat people very well…not
this guy!
Buddy of mine here at work Steve Dillon won a free trip to Detroit this
past weekend to see the Wings – Leafs game. Prize was a fundraiser by the
CeeBees, tickets for 4 to the game, hotels and spending money included, +
4 signed Dan Cleary jerseys. Here’s how the weekend went………….Feel free to
share, he’s rotted and wants everyone to know what a professional Cleary
was.
Steve first showed me the promotional ticket: The Ultimate Danny Cleary
Weekend
Arrived at the airport in Windsor and drove to his hotel in Detroit , only
2 of the 4 promised Dan Cleary jerseys, none signed. As instructed, he
went to the practice on Friday to meet Danny and to visit the dressing
room. As he only had 2 of his jerseys with him, he desperately wanted to
get one signed for his 7 year old son. After waiting an hour, he was asked
to go in to the dressing room. At this point, all the other players had
left. Danny asked their names and signed the two jerseys, 5 minutes later
Danny said he had to go cuz he had things to do and rushed out.
Steve was a little dissapointed as he still only had 2 of the 4 jerseys
and hadn’t had Danny sign one for his son. Danny only asked for the boys
names. Steve knew the PR guy, as he was from Newfoundland . He told Steve
not to be discouraged, Danny had to leave and to come back for tomorrow’s
practice. They had no intentions of doing that as they were only there for
a couple days and had already wasted 3 hours at the rink for 5 minutes of
Danny’s time, but decided, what the heck you only get a chance to do this
once and his little fella really would’ve liked a signed jersey.
Went to the rink the next day, only 5 Wings were out for the optional
practice, one of which was Danny. PR guy had Steve’s number and said he’d
text him when to come down to get his other two jerseys and have them
signed. An hour later after watching the Leafs practice – 3 call ups were
the only ones on the ice, Steve’s wife was a little rotted and wanted to
leave. He gave in and texted the PR guy. The response, “Sorry we’ve left.”
They all left disgusted, another 3 hours at the rink. Told him he’d have
his jerseys for him at the game.
Went for supper and got to the rink early to get his other two jerseys.
Thirty minutes before the game started, he finally gets a text saying he’s
in front of Little Caesar’s with his other two jerseys. Steve leaves his
seat, gets to the concourse, there is a Little Caesar’s every 100 feet.
Called him and explained, he said he was at the main entrance. Got back to
his seat when the anthems were on, realized they weren’t signed. Texted
him back and was told, “You’ll have to take that up with Ian Moores.”
Sunday morning he texted Ian and told him he was a little sour at the fact
that they had 4 weeks notice to have the jerseys signed and how he wasted
6 hours at the rink for 5 minutes with Danny and all. Ian apologized and
said he’d see what he could do. Ian was coaching in the herder finals at
the same time and really didn’t want to deal with it. Moments later
Steve’s phone rings.
“Hi Steve, this is Daniel Cleary. I understand you have a little problem
and called Ian Moores to complain about having your jerseys signed.”
“Well Danny, I was promised 4 signed jerseys and unfortunately now I have
to explain to my 7 year old that I don’t have one for him.”
“Well Steve, you should be thankful to see the game and to have had the
privelege to have hung out with professional NHL hockey players in an NHL
dressing room.”
“Danny, I just would’ve liked to have a jersey signed for my son.”
“Well Steve, that’s now how we operate, leave your jerseys at the front
desk and they’ll be signed.”
And hung up………..
Steve was obviously beside himself and contacted Ian and told him how
Danny had hung up in his face and that he was very upset. Ian texted him
back, which I had the pleasure of reading this morning. This is how it
went from there:
Ian: Steve, you can leave your jersey at the front desk and Danny will
have them signed.
Steve: No Thanks Ian, I’d rather not have anything signed by him after how
I was treated.
Ian: You have no right to be upset.
Steve: Ian, I don’t think you understand why I’m upset, and furthermore do
not think its fair for you to tell me not to be upset.
Ian: Danny was nothing but professional with you and did you a favor by
bringing you to the dressing room.
Steve: Well Ian, the five minutes I spent talking to him were fine, but I
was promised 4 signed jerseys as part of the Danny Cleary ulitmate
getaway, and only received two.
Ian: Now you are just being selfish and ungrateful.
Steve: Well Ian, there’s no need for name calling, I think there’s a lack
of professionalism being shown here. I know you two are friends, but I was
promised something I did not receive.
Ian: I’m not sure what it is that you would like to happen, Danny offered
to sign your jerseys.
Steve: I would like an apology from Danny for hanging up in my face for
one, and also an explanation as to why in the 4 weeks leading up to this
weekend, 4 signed jerseys were not waiting for me, as was indicated in
your prize draw?
Ian: That’s probably not going to happen.
Steve: Well I will give it a few days before I decide on how I’ll proceed.
This will certainly help in your promo for next years ticket sales.
Ian: Do not contact me again.
