If Erik Karlsson were traded . . .

To clarify, when I mentioned East Coast bias I meant in general, the media, fans etc, not the original poster.

And as far as Karlsson, I disagree he is top 5, here is who I would take over him as it stands today:

Crosby
McDavid
Matthews
Price
Kane
Doughty
Stamkos
Benn

But that's me.

Add Kucherov, Ovechkin, Scheifele....

As a sens fan I REALLY wish Eugene Melnyk would wear a muzzle. He does more harm to his own franchise than anyone else.

Ottawa won't trade Karlsson to Toronto, the division rival next door. Not happening.

If by some miracle they did I would much rather see Marner traded than Nylander.

I used to think that but I don't buy that any more. If Ottawa is in rebuild mode, then why not send someone you'd otherwise lose to Toronto for three pieces you could hyperjump your rebuild around? I hate speculative trades, but if I were the GM in Ottawa, Nylander/Marner, a guy like Kapanen and a 1st Round Pick would be enough to entice me to say yes.

While I would love to see Karlsspn here in Toronto, I wouldn't bank on it.

I am excited about Liljegren's potential. Hopefully Ottawa isn't.

I'd put these guys from your list ahead of Karlsson:

Crosby
McDavid
Matthews
Price
Kane
Stamkos

Not sure I'd choose Doughty or Benn ahead or Erik

Add Kucherov, Ovechkin, Scheifele....

Agree here in full. Love that you also thought to include Scheifele as I do too.

I would also add Gaudreau, Malkin and Bobrovsky as players I would select ahead of Erik.

So here's my list of players I think are better, that I'd rather build a team around:

Crosby
McDavid
Matthews
Price
Kane
Stamkos
Kucherov
Ovechkin
Scheifele
Gaudreau
Malkin
Bobrovsky

I'd say Karlsson is Top 15 in the league, but not Top 10, certainly not Top 5 and not even in the discussion for Top 3.

Every team and GM puts a high worth on D, probably higher than any other position. Karlsson is one of if not the best D in the league, he will be in high demand no matter what his salary. If you want a top D than you have to pay for him. Teams are willing to trade top players, picks and prospects to get top D men. The Sens will trade him, they aren’t paying any player 12 million, won’t happen. There is likely already a lineup of teams calling the Sens about him.

It’s funny that most top player list never include goalies and D. Goal scorers are still more glamorous and popular with fans.

The notion of teams not trading good players within their division is pretty ridiculous, but for a lot of GM's it's some kind of taboo thing they won't even consider. I say if you have a chance to improve your team or help your rebuild then trade with whoever you like. If you have to face that player a few extra times a year then so what.

I just don't see Ottawa doing it in this case so I'd be shocked if a trade like this happens. Lou wouldn't be doing his job if he didn't at least pick up the phone and ask though.

And I agree on Liljegren, I think he'll be one of the big steals of the draft considering how he fell all the way down to us. He was just loaned to the Swedish WJC team so maybe we'll get a good look at him.

I agree with Kevin, if in a rebuild trade for the best deal to improve your team no matter who it’s with. Right now the Leafs have lots of talent up front in the NHL and minors however they are weak on D and imo still don’t have a true #1 back there. They would be a perfect team for the Sens to try and trade with. If they did Marner or Nylander would likely have to go as they have a pile of big contracts coming up and Karlsson’s will also be huge. Either way the Sens either pay out big bucks as Karlsson wants what he deserves and earned or they trade him for a pile of young talent. Trade is probably their best option but I hope they resign him.

Goalies are much too fungible in my mind for them to be compared to the top skaters in the game. The one exception would Bobrovsky. He has been lights out for a season and a half now. I wouldn't consider a forward that isn't great in the defensive zone, so I wouldn't look to guys like Gaudreau, Kane, or Ovechkin. Malkin is up around the top-5, Matthews top-10ish, Doughty, Subban, Hedman are in that top-10 mix too. For me Kucherov is the one that I waffle back and forth on for number 3.

Karlsson is the best offensive d-man by a lot. And he is right there with Doughty, Subban, Hedman for their defensive play. The biggest thing for me though, is that he makes his partner look a lot better, whether it be Methot, Oduya. When I watch him play I am reminded of Chris Pronger's time in Edmonton with Marc-Andre Bergeron. Giordano, also is like this. Just look at Brodie with/without him, same goes for Hamilton.

It's funny how quickly these rankings change every year based solely on the current season guys are having.

In 2014-15 and 2015-16 there was a tonne of Stamkos bashing. People saying he was a nobody without St. Louis, and was just a regular center. And Jamie Benn was the second coming of Christ.

Now in 2017-18 Benn doesn't get a mention and Stamkos is now a top 5 center again. And if EK was on his last 2 seasons average point per game pace he'd once again be considered a top 5 player.

I agree with this assessment. Top 15-20 in the league. He will fetch a decent return but the longer it goes, the return gets smaller

I'd put Karlsson at number 1 for Defense, ahead of everyone else. In terms of franchise players, I'd say rounding out the top 10, if not just on the cusp. Not a criticism of him, but there' are a lot of dynamic players in the league.

IF he gets traded, would have to be to a team that has a big contract or 2 expiring that would part with a lower-rent version of Karlsson (with no clause that lets him Veto a move to Ottawa) and a mix of prospects and picks.

.........Which to me says Philly or St Louis ;)
