Kovalchuk to the Islanders?????

As much as the Isles need a guy like this I would hate to see them suddenly become competitive in the division/conference. His contract would put the final nail in the team's cap dilemma for a long time though. Although I could accept it if it means keeping him in the NHL. I'd much rather he go to LA. There are enough anguished Kings fans out there that need to see some post season success after this past decade.

Dreger didn't say that - he has posted that it wasn't him. not sure who it was, but it wasn't him.

Any team that signs Kovy will sell lots of jerseys, and wind up with a worse record this year than they had last year, guaranteed. Kovalchuk is hugely talented, but doesn't make players around him better, and arguably makes the players around him look worse than they are.

Dreger just said on twitter:

A few hours of sleep and the concensus based on texts and emails sent my way still has Kovy going to the Kings, regardless of Isles push.

Kovalchuk is probably TOO GOOD to play on most teams after watching him for half of last season... he made Langenbrunner and Rolston look like ABSOLUTE FOSSILS.

I know Lou is in there somewhere on the negotiations, but if Kovalchuk is in fact looking for that kind of coin, I'll save a few bucks not having to buy that new jersey... although a VolchK jersey might still end up here...

Ridiculous spectacle being put on by a player I assumed wanted to win. Its all about the benjamins, in the end I guess!

12 mil for Kovalchuk is far too much. LA would be dumb to trade away their teams core after a year of progress for a individualist who has tasted the playoffs twice in his career, bowing out quickly each time. I'd never sign such a risk for that amount of money and sacrifice 2 years of solid rebuilding in the hopes of selling 1000 extra jerseys.

I cant see LA giving up 4 of their best players to the flyers for carter and gagne, just to sign kovie... btw he sucked in the playoffs vs the flyers and i know its tuff playing with new players. I could maybe see this deal getting more wind behind it if the flyers were going to package carter and one of their better rookie/sophmore players such as JVR or Giroux (wouldnt want to see giroux go...think he may be untouchable)

The person I could see playing best with Kovalchuk on LA is Kopitar. If he does go to LA I don't see Kopitar getting moved.

Kovy plays with an heir (or is it air?) of confidence. He has the swagger equivalent of Kobe in the NBA. I like it, as it pumps the team and him up. He will forever be remembered in my eyes for showing up Crosby. priceless.

Even with all Kovie's positive attributes why would the Kings gut the heart out of their team and saddle themselves with a ginormous cap hit for the next decade? Here's hoping its only rumor.

If Kovy wants 12 million, he can go back to Russia. If LA gives it to him, I will laugh.

i seriously hope none of you are dumb enough to think there is ANY chance the kings trade KOPITAR, brown, johnson, quick just to get carter, gagne, and sign kovalchuk. there is no way its happening, not even worth talking about.

Before the cap he would have gotten 12 million with no questions asked. With the cap I don't think anyone is stupid enough to commit 1/5th of the cap space to 1 player. You would be asking for trouble as other players developed (doughty and so on).

lol, This trade made me laugh. Not gonna happen.

Emperor Wang has proven time and again that he has even LESS hockey sense than Leafs management.

That's my thought...if this is true and LA is going to trade Kopitar, Quick, Brown and Johnson for Gagne and Carter JUST to bring Kovalchuk in AND to give him $12 million per year, they're beyond idiotic and out of the reach of help.

Kovy's an exciting goal scorer, but you can't hand $12 million per year to a guy who's going to score you 2 goals during an 8-2 *** whipping. Let him go try and get $12 million in Russia.

Since then Crosby has won a cup, a gold medal, a Rocket Richard Trophy, Art Ross Trophy, Hart trophy, etc. Kovalchuk has won the right to prime tee times in April

As well as every other player in the NHL that has not won all those....Your point is..?

The point is - committing $12mil to one player is franchise suicide. As long as you are saddled with that contract, you will never be competitive - and there is no way you will be able to move a contract like that.

Kovalchuk is certainly the best of the best AVAILABLE - but he is by no stretch of the imagination in the conversation for best player in the league. Some of the people here were screaming last year when the Sedin's signed for $12.5...together...
