Ha! Honest question, is soccer pushing hockey at 4? I follow soccer very loosely, so I am curious?

I completely understand how comparatively small hockey is to the other sports. I’m also asking, with everything of these other guys starting to climb out of reach, do you guys think collectors from other segments will come over and buy more guys in hockey that should be selling for more? Not just the people who swoop in on The Cup annually. Or is that already happening and hockey is just stuck where it is?

Actually good point. Soccer AND cricket will surpass hockey.

If they ever really pushed the marketing for soccer, it would surpass all the others. Most soccer fans in their 30s and up did not grow up collecting cards of their favorite player as a kid because they didn't exist. The soccer market is still very new and has tons of room to grow. A big hurdle is the popularity of the sport in the United States. It may be the only sport in the U.S. where women's U.S. national team trading cards are worth more than their male counterparts.

I still don't see any of the players outside of Crosby challenging for top hobby dollars. Crosby is fairly well known outside of the hockey world to the casual sports fan (Ovi as well), plays in a sports city- Pittsburgh, etc. McDavid plays in a city in Canada that many of my finely educated peers in the U.S. couldn't find on a map....
 
Isn't part of the Trout equation the fact that it came from Bowman Chrome Draft? I know there are full-fledged baseball products just for prospectors. In hockey, we get what? UD CHL?
 
Goldin was interviewed today saying in the next Jordan themed auction, there's a Lebron rookie that he expects to break a million. Has to be a BGS 10 Exquisite rookie no?

Actually, I would consider hockey almost interchangeable with soccer. The major difference is the number of sets released......ending prices for some mid level players can blow hockey out of the water. And prices for players like Ronaldo and Messi are insane!

There are no BGS 10 LeBron Exquisites. My guess is that someone is selling one of the two Exquisite Logoman Rookie Cards.

If he wins a Cup with Toronto..... I don't even want to think about what the prices will be like.
 
Short of this tournament they'll be playing this season, I don't think Toronto has a realistic window with the way their team is currently constructed. Can they get it done in time before Matthews skips town? Does Toronto move him in year four of his deal if he doesn't agree to an extension?

Toronto may have to overpay Matthews more than he is now to keep him in Canada.

I think he is going to bolt when he can, he doesn't really want to play in Canada anymore for numerous reasons, big one being the scrutiny that is the TO/Canadian hockey media market. As you said, Toronto may have to dedicate an absurd amount of their cap to even try and retain him.

I honestly think that is part of the reason Canadian teams don't win The Stanley Cup anymore. The media in the US pushes hockey so far down the list, it helps the players just relax and play, they don't worry about being the only game/sport in town.

That said, if they win, I still think it'll be tough for him to be THAT guy in hockey card circles. A cupless McDavid will probably still outsell a ringed Matthews IMO. And neither of them are getting to Crosby. Ovie MIGHT get semi-close if he breaks TGOs goals record.

If it's my money, it's always going to be on Crosby and Gretzky, but that's me. Crosby could be the hockey equivalent of Trout as he pads his numbers, climbs lists, and the fact he has cards in the modern era.

I think Auston will have a tough time touching Crosby especially since Crosby delivered so quickly in terms of Cups, Gold Medals, highlight reels, etc. I mean Auston did start his career off with a banger of a game but he still lost that game.

A ringed Matthews vs a ringless Connor would be interesting to see though. If Auston carries the Leafs on that Cup run, I'd imagine he has a decent shot to compete with Connor, at least on the unnumbered stuff. Part of the reason is I think there's just so much Connor stuff out there. Cup may not compete partially because Leafs Patches can only get so many colours vs Edmonton patches but in terms of YG, there's way more Connor YGs than Auston right?

Best for whom? Edmonton? The NHL? Canada with no cups in a gazillion years? People who are exclusively hockey card collectors? Who is it truly best for?

As it pertains to this thread, I don't totally agree with that. If McDavid went to a bigger market in the US competed for and/or won The Cup, that would actually benefit the NHL and hockey card collecting and prices MORE.

As I mentioned on Jeremy's SCL show, we live in a media-driven world and Edmonton is a minuscule market in the scheme of things. Put McDavid in LA, Chicago, one of the big Western Conference markets. Then have him win versus Crosby and the Penguins in the finals which is what Bettman and the league want more than anything. After that, you can forget about it, the roof will come off the league and hockey cards.

McDavid in LA (especially with a CUP) would expand the market in ways that only Gretzky did when the trade happened. Winning a CUP in Edmonton would make him god to the Canadian market and no doubt would increase his card prices...winning in a place like like LA would put him on a global level. I lived in Ventura, CA back in the 2000s, and made plenty of trips to LA. Say what you want about SoCal, but they love their superstar athletes and L.A. is the global mecca of entertainment stardom. In order for the market to truly take off, you need that global mega-star that not only sells for crazy levels on his/her own, but also lifts all the other boats as his own tide rises.
 
I think LA is the wrong market for the perceived pop in NHL popularity. If McDavid or another superstar went to the Rangers and won I think it would be bigger than any other market.
