!st, I must say....I really do not follow hockey.....don't know most of the rules of the game....but do love the fighting ;) Yes, I know..barbaric.

One of my closest friends is from Canada and has tried to get me more involved in hockey for years with no luck....then I come here and see some of the sweet looking patches on the cards...and want to collect lol

Anyway...with all that said....

I am interested in possible collecting a rookie. Of course I do not have the funds for a Crosby or that Ovechkin (sp?) fellow....

Here's my question....

Who would be a decent young player/rookie (born in either '85 or '86) to bulid a collection of? Someone who COULD be good....but definately not a super scrub washout? Along with collecting the cards...I would hope to watch the player advance each yr....so I would like someone that the team has a lot of faith in and has some potential skills....

So far I have been thinking about choosing Wojtek Wolski....any others that might be a better choice?

As for collecting a player.

I'd have to ask, which team do you follow or have a like of?

Then in regards to Wojtek Wolski. His nicer RC items of the Patch variety are pretty expensive.

Drop Josho33 a PM and chat him up. Cause he would be better equipped to answer the Wolski question.

Whatever you decide to do. Remember it's a hobby and too have fun with it.

Thanks Langway :)

I agree....I'm just looking to have fun and collect a guy that maybe...I mean a longtime maybe...could be a somebody 15 yrs from now...like 500 goals...or something like that...but ya never know, and that's what is fun....

I think that a player who's auto averages $20-$50 is ok...with the occassional rare auto reaching $100-$500 ...maybe

Like I said..I'm not trying to prospect..or turn a flip...I just want a guy to go all out and collect every auto of....and atleast be proud of my accomplishment. The bonus would be if he actually turned out to be an ok player lol

As in basketball.....believe it or not...it took me months to decide on Andris Biedrins. I started buying up his autos...relatively cheap...then the kid decides to go on a double/double run and lead the league if FG%....his cards skyrocketed (but have since come back down)....so I feel that I made a good choice in a young 20 yr old player....hopefully he'll be real good in the years to come....but I am having a blast collecting him.

I want to do the same for Hockey...1 player...have a site made to display his autos....and have fun :)

Plus, it'll give me something to talk about with most of you guys here....haha ;)

As for favorite teams....hmmmm I have alsways like the Redwings (again, as a casual fan..not really following the game to well). Of course I like the Rangers (I'm from Jersey...not a Devils fan at all). And I loved watching Colorado win it all a few years ago....

I guess those 3 teams would be who I would choose from....

Go after Nikolai Zherdev .....hes got nice cards and I think is having a falling out with values anymore so there is nice stuff out there of him and maybe at falling prices

I'd like to stay with players born in 1986, 1987 or 1988 (Jordan Staal). But thanks....I looked up Zherdev...not too shabby...but born in 84

Avs have a few good young guys Wolski,Svatos and Liles are all descent and younger they have potential to be expensive but for now are reasonable

Rangers dont have that much younger talent except maybe in goal but the hardcore rangers fans IE MikeGiueseffi snatch them up like wild fire

Red Wings are always a hot team with hardcore team collectors they have some young talent but the hardcore Wings fans are always after them

I think I have a list to choose from...I know some are a bit pricey...but these seem to be the best young players out there...other than the 2 obvious choices of Crosby and Ovechkin.

1) Gilbert Brule - Blue Jackets C - DOB: 1987 (Plenty of nice autos..decent stats)

2) Jordan Staal - Penguins C - DOB 1988 (No autos from what I can tell...youngest player in the NHL?)

5) Wojtek Wolski - Avalanche LW - DOB 1986 (Decent stats...decent prices)

So far..I am leaning towards Brule...cool name, decent autos and patches available....

Remember, I'm not into base cards of any kind..so the pricey non auto 1/1's don't matter to me...I just want autos....I see a lot of Brule autos for $30-$50...some in the hundreds...

Any opinions on my list?

I would pick someone NOT on the three teams you mentioned. You would be paying a premium just because of the team. I would go with someone like Corey Perry of Anaheim, or Olesz in Florida.

Will look those 2 guys up...thanks :)

That's exactly what I need....names that I might have otherwise never heard of...

Thanks again ;)

Edit...both born in 1985 :( Trying to start my hockey collecting with a next generation type of guy...born 1986-1988 But thanks....;)

Jordan Staal is a good choice no too high priced he has autos in Heroes and Prospects and is a good Penalty Killer .........DO NOT TRY for Malkin hes the big rookie for this year

I've narrowed it down to these 2:

1) Gilbert Brule - Blue Jackets C - DOB: 1987 (Plenty of nice autos..decent stats)

2) Jordan Staal - Penguins C - DOB 1988 (No autos from what I can tell...youngest player in the NHL?)

I'm still leaning towards Brule...only because he has more autos available now. I'm guessing the bulk of Staals autos won't be until next season?

Another couple of options:

Anze Kopitar

Patrick O'Sullivan

Venture on over to http://www.hockeydb.com It has a wealth of hockey info. That is if you haven't already used it? ;)

Brian

Thanks...no, I've just been using Yahoo Sports. I had Kopitar listed but ruled him out for 2 reasons....Lack of autos now and his stats looks pretty good..which leads me to think he will be expensive.

I will look up O'Sullivan now ;)

Brule is expensive cause he has a BIG upside so Ive heard but I think hes overrated

Looking at his completed auctions..for autos...they're really not too bad.

With the exception of 1 auto that went for $411..the rest are ok...falling anywhere between $30-$140.

A lot of the guys mentioned to me are decent..but almost all born in 1984 or 1985.....not really what I'm aiming for.

I might rule out Jordan Staal for the mere fact that he is Crosbys teammate....you KNOW that there will be a good amount of dual autos with the 2 of them paired up...and the prices will be high simply because Crosby is on the card.

I think Brule is "ok"...he has so-so stats...nothing to jump up and down about...and he might turn out to be ok....decent upside as was mentioned. And I believe he is cheaper overall than Wolski.

What's the story/deal with Bobby Ryan?

I like him because he's from my home state...but I can't find much info on him....any good or a bust?

This year I'd consider Paul Stastny from the Av's - A solid player who will have a fair bit of cards that should be reasonably priced.

Yea, I looked up Stasty earlier when I was checking out Wolski...unforunately he was born in '85...

I know it's odd....but I am really picky about a players DOB...lol I am the type of collector that always likes the youngest and most underdog type of teams/players.

On all of my video games (NFL, NBA & MLB)...I have solid rookie teams...with the youngest players....that has spille dover into my collecting habits now lol
