Mike Richards put on Waivers, again

I'm guessing teams wanted LA to retain too much of Richards' remaining contract. Placing him on waivers and having a team pick him up would take the entire cap hit off.

With that said, should Edmonton pick him up? They'd get a #2C from a SC team, is a former captain, and has some leadership skills (depending who you ask...lol).

The biggest thing is if Mike Richards would play there too. Don't know if he would refuse to report or just dog it and party it up even more. What is good for Edm is that they have a centre that's under contract for 5 more years, which they badly need.
 
Edmonton was the first one that came to mind, however like all teams its a fairly big cap hit with 5 years remaining for a player going backwards instead of forward. Might be a good fit for both though.

They'd get a #4 Centre, at $5.75M.

#4C on LA, #2C on Edm :)

Plus it'll give time for Draisaitl to develop properly and not rush him. And given the mess so far in Edm, I highly doubt Derek Roy will re-sign there. Just looking at how he has helped Yakupov already, shows how important it is to get a decent centre. So unless you're able to get a contract with Derek Roy done now, I don't see how you can go into next season not having a #2C again. Edm banked on signing some UFA centre, since they decided to trade away Sam Gagner, but nothing materialized. So I don't know why management would think the same this year.

Sure there's talk about McDavid and Eichel, but you don't know where you'll finish and how the lottery will go.

I guess Edm could negotiate with LA now, just like they did for the Derek Roy deal. That way, Edmonton could dump some salary too and LA might get someone they can use. But I'm guessing LA is looking for more depth on D, which Edm doesn't have a lot of. Nikitin?

I'd be surprised if any team put in a claim. The only way I'd be interested is if he was on re-entry waivers, and that doesn't make sense for the Kings. The most likely outcome is that Mike Richards has played his last game in the NHL for awhile.
 
hmmm...see how it plays out. All playoff teams are looking for depth on C. It's just the contract that is scaring GM's away. But as we've seen with Campbell's and Luongo's contract, there's no untradeable contract.


Another thought. Would Philly pick him back up?

Only if they could unload a bad contract back to L.A., they don't have the cap space right now $1.847M to take Richards without shedding money themselves.

And there's the rub, Calgary and Toronto were having discussions with LA but they wanted to offload a bad contract or two back on LA and the Kings didn't want any of that. LA is going to have to eat a lot of the salary, or take bad money back to move him at this point.

The only way I think a team trades for him without sending a bad contract the other way is if LA adds their first round pick. Like the Devils did back in to 2006 when they traded Vladimir Malakhov and a first round pick to San Jose for two marginal prospects just so they could get his money off of the books.

Yeah I can see them being asked of that, but I can see LA sooner keeping the 1st, and trading it for an asset that will help the team this year in their cup run. Maybe Yandle?

So the best option for now is to bury his contract in the minors or hope that someone takes it for free. LA has made enough money in the last few years to eat some of the salary.

Now if nobody picks up Richards this year, then it's actually good for LA. They can call him up in the playoffs, where there isn't any cap limitations.
 
I could see Minny trying to pick him up. Not saying I agree with that but I could see them trying to pick him up. Shake the lineup and the team a little

Not sure how the math all works, but that would give the Kings $3.821M cap space. Would that be enough to add a dman with $5.25M cap hit at the trade deadline?

If a team picks him up in waivers or even re-entry waivers, there's even more cap relief.
 
It's sad how these stupid contracts are sending NHL players to the AHL. Richards may not be as good as he once was but he is still a solid NHL player.
 
Wonder if the drop in Canadian dollar and the subsequent drop in the salary cap for next season is weighing on teams like the Kings who are pushing the cap ceiling.
 
Any team that picked him up would be nuts. Not worth that crazy contract.... the Flyers trade is now looking AMAZING. Hey, he got 2 cups riding and should of won at least 1 selke during his prime. Sad at the age of 29 how far he has fallen though. That break away goal he scored against the Habs is still etched in my brain, probably will be forever.
 
Being an easterner, and having seen Richards as a Junior and in Philly, what the heck has happened to him the last year and a half? Any of you that watch games on the west coast can share?
