Milan Lucic hit on Ryan Miller.

I play nets and I agree that Miller was fair game. A goalie's place is in the crease, if they want to play at the blue line, then sell your gear and become a defenseman. At best, Looch should have gotten a 2 minute minor. But for the rest of Sabres not to stand up and at least attempt to put an asswhoopin' on Lucic for the hit? Egads.

Again, he is not 'fair game' according to the rules of the NHL.

As for the Sabres not retaliating, I agree to a certain point. BUT...

Frontier Justice, that's the way to go! Blast Lucic with a crosscheck to the face, and hopefully give him a broken jaw! Take the penalty. Or, next game, do what the Islanders did last year and forget about playing; go around and intentionally run every player you can find, beat the living crap out of them. Hell, it's only two minutes in most cases. Screw the rules!!! Bring up some idiot from the ECHL and tell him he gets a new contract next year if he puts Lucic out for 20 games. That'll do it!

And, in case people think I am being totally serious, I'm not.

I play goal, and if I am that far out of the crease I expect to get hit (or give one). I am fair game at that point. Goalies have to get it out of their head that they are untouchable outside the paint. Suck it up!! You went for a skate and got your *** handed to you Miller. Next time, do better and brace for it.

To top it all off, when you run full tilt into someone at 225 pounds, (as I often do in ball hockey, usually because I suck at slowing down!), it is the body's natural reaction to push out with the arms. Factor in Lucic's aggressive nature, and I really don't see any other outcome in that situation. What did you people expect him to do?? Pause, weigh his options, remember the good times he had with Miller at the last grade school reunion, and lightly tip toe over him??

Shaddddddap.

If a goalie comes out of his crease he is fair game in my eyes. And if it is a rule you can't hit them then it needs to be changed!

Fair enough, but until that point what Lucic did was wrong, as you can't hit the goalie, and warranting of a penalty.

I agree that Lucic could have laid up or taken it easier on Miller and it did deserve a penality.. Lucic had a few seconds to make up his mind Ryan Miller in his interview had plenty of time to choose his wording.. Calling him gutless... lets see he did not swing a stick at him.. and to call him a POS not once but twice that is classless.. Glad to see him get run and as a huge fan of Enroth I will be interested to see how he does with a bigger role..

For sure. Rules are rules. I just don't agree with it haha

So are the Goalies allowed to throw hits? Remember Thomas in the playoffs last year against one of the Sedins.

Hextall Vs. Chelios , never going to be another Ron Hextall..

No, gutless would be an apt description for the rest of the Sabres team who should be ashamed of themselves for not standing up for Miller.

This. As much as I hate Lucic and his "yeah I gave you a cheap shot, what are you going to do about it" smirk he always seems to have on his face it's still pretty sad the Sabres didn't do more about it.

Was the hit necessary? No. Was it funny? Yup.
Was it devestating? No. Did it turn the tide of the game? A bit.
Was it cheap? I'm 50.50 on it, not a fan of hits on the tender, but then again, Hextall, Billy Smith, even Brodeur has stepped up to swing on skaters when necessary, so if Miller can't put on his big boy pants and stand up for himself, then that's HIS problem, and his team's because they did diddly squat to man up on his behalf.

I personally don't like anyone hitting the goaltender when he's in front of that net doing his job, but if he wants to come that far out to challenge a player on a breakaway, I would say that he's fair game. He's another defenseman, lucky enough to wear bigger pads. If Lucic had maintained control of the puck on the way in, and Miller had blasted him, there wouldn't have been a call at all, he would have been applauded. Even by ME, a huge Lucic fan. Goalies take it to skaters when they feel threatened, ask Chris Chelios, or even go back to the playoffs last year when Thomas did it to Sedin. He's protecting his net, but if he wants to make it physical, and get in front of a player headed his way quickly, on a breakaway, rather than stay by the goal where he belongs, if he gets hit, tough luck. You pay the price for being out of your element. Goalies get knocked around behind the net when there's traffic and they're trying to clear, and it's part of the game, it's no big deal.

And as far as Lucic being gutless, Miller needs to wake up. He swung to take out Lucic immediately after he was hit. Embarrassed and on his back, he tried to retaliate illegally, and had he been successful, it would have been matched penalties. He hacked at Lucic in the crease a couple times after that as well, but since he failed to exact any kind of revenge, he ran his mouth to the press. Talking trash after the fact does nothing but make you look like more of a crybaby.

The Sabres should have had someone man up and do something about it, because it's an eye for an eye out there on the ice, and a big hit would have been fair retribution. Instead they just let it slide and got rolled over. Had Kaleta laid out Thomas, Lucic would have beaten the half a brain out of his head for it. Myers is a big boy, he could have stood up for Miller if it was that big a deal. So either the Sabres are light in the loafers, OR, the more likely explanation, it was just another part of the game. It happens.

My overall opinion on the matter is this. It's hockey. People get hit. Savard is retired because of a cheap shot, and since there was no real rule in place for it at the time, so as much as I hate Cooke for it, the bottom line is, crap-ola happens, deal with it.

It was a cheap hit, but the Sabres who were on the ice should be embarassed for not standing up for their goaltender.

It looks like the reverse angle of the video shows Miller throwing the initial hit with Lucic basically bracing himself. It's unfortunate that Miller fell so hard but if he would have stayed in his crease this wouldn't have been an issue.

Could you post a link to that, a clip or something? I haven't even seen that angle of it, from the view in the game, and replays, it looked like he played the puck and Lucic let him have it, but if there's a replay that shows Miller initiating contact, the little respect I had for the guy (after his nonsensical rant last night) will drop even further .

As a goalie myself I absolutely hate when myself or another goalie gets run over BUT it happens if/when a goalie makes a decision to make a play like that. Anytime you leave your crease you are leaving yourself vulnerable, regardless of what the rules state. I don't really blame Miller for being upset as it is the most common reaction for a goalie in play like that, but I think the biggest problem is that nothing was done in defense of Miller by his teammates.

I have played on teams where I have gotten absolutely ZERO back up from my own teammates on similar plays or unneeded contact. That part actually gets me more fired up than the actual contact from another player. Maybe its just me having a goalie mentality but i've always known it to be that you stand up for your goalie in cases like this. If the guy is bigger than you, so what... you at least make a point to them showing that kind of behavior won't be tolerated regardless of who they are.

Not surprising considering the player involved.

To those saying that Buffalo should have stood up to Lucic -- with WHO? No one on that team can go after Lucic and not get murdered. Lucic is huge and the only guy of comparable size (Goose) would get killed by him.

Just Lucic being a bully because he knows that most of the time he can get away with it. I agree with Miller's statements and that's not just as a Sabres fan.
