News about 2023-24 UD Series 1!

Cool new parallel versions! My question is with only 12 cards per pack x 12 packs (144 cards per box) compared to the previous 8 cards per pack x 24 packs (192 cards per box), will we see a discounted wax price?

Exactly. Whats the price point?

I anticipate the base being the only reduction in boxes. If that's the case, it doesn't matter much and I'd be fine if price remains the same. Most people discard it anyway. But if hits are reduced, that's a different story.

It says three inserts per pack instead of one, so 36 inserts per box instead of 24... what those inserts are will greatly impact the value out of a box...

Nothing wrong with changing things up, but I would have rather had the whole story at this point then just a teaser.

New numbered cards is pretty interesting! Topps has so many parallels for base cards in their flagship products. Young Guns parallels will be big chase cards.

Does anyone remember when they reduced it from 36 packs per box to just 24? When did that happen? I just remember it happening one day and no one said anything about it....

Bedard year… prices aren’t being reduced LOL. Less for more has been the trend for the last few years. Just look at the price of retail blasters and how the pack count has been dropping almost every year. Zero chance this comes out even at the old MSRP. Between Bedard and the cardboard cartel this stuff will cost even more I’d bet. Even if UD tries to lower the MSRP it’s going to get gouged like crazy.

True... but Connor 2.0 isn't expected to be in Series 1. So this is probably a way to spice up the product since the YG checklist will probably be a little on the weak side.

And before anyone asks... it's a similar situation to this year's Series 1 - they want to ensure the product arrives in time for The Fall Expo - so it'll be at the printers long before the season starts.

Looks like you are right Maple Leaf. PJ confirmed on blowout S1 will be holdovers so no Bedard basically. Argh.

Overall it's probably for the best. The cost to make the countless base cards for all the variations of S1/S2/Extended must be an area that UD sees as a way to cut those costs, replace with additional inserts, and keep box prices the same.

Those Outburst Gold 1/1 cards are going to look really nice. I also like the Young Guns design!

So if it is same price point will you still get 6 young guns per box as that is the most chased cards.
Dan

I wonder if that means 6 base set YGs or a mix of these new parallels. I’m sure it will be a hit but I’m not sure there needs to be more YGs out there, same with parallels. That is more of my wallets opinion than my own.

Hey Everyone,

There's going to be some new things coming to 2023-24 Upper Deck Series 1! Read about it here :
https://www.upperdeckblog.com/2023/0...see-a-refresh/

I really just hope that there will be effort put towards continuing the 500 Goal Club Set. There are a few guys who still need cards, others who just need Autos.

It would be super disappointing not to see Crosby or Stamkos in this product.

Here's my two cents. I would rather the parallels on the Young Guns and such as opposed to the $0.25 inserts they throw in. On the other hand the fun part about the Young Guns has always been the base, exclusives and high gloss + more recently the canvas and clear-cut young guns. It feels like overkill to have more parallels of the Young Guns.

After seeing the sell sheet and getting more information, I really like this change. Adding more value to the product with new parallels is a good thing. While some may think the royalty look on the Portraits is dumb, it's different so kudos to the team at UD for coming up with new ideas.

As for the price, I hope everyone realizes that UD isn't to blame. Here in Canada, we've been hammered by the distributors who create a false sense of supply/demand with their allocations. I've refused to break many products that I used to because of this. If more of us follow suit, the prices would come down. Alas, the group breaks continue to get filled which is what drives up pricing.

Enjoy the hobby, everyone and may you all be lucky enough to pull a Bedard YG parallel! (except the 1/1 which will be in one of my boxes lol)

Interesting that everyone is playing down the reduction in base cards - which I agree - very few collect sets today. But nobody has mentioned that fact that nobody really collects inserts as well. They end up being a bunch of $0.50 to $5.00 cards that are collected by few. Yes it will be nice to see 1 of 1's, but why not extend the numbering to the inserts as well - and maybe actually create some value. And while they are at it - hockey should adopt what other sports have done, and slap the RC label on all cards for a players rookie year.

What card companies really need to do is tailor products to bring people back to collecting.

Just my two cents.

See you all at the Expo.
