You don't want Marner at $8M but you'd accept Draisaitl at $8.5M? The guy had 1 more point. Playing quite a bit with Mcdavid. I know points aren't everything but in the second half of the season (and the playoffs) Marner was quite literally one of the top producing forwards in the league. The guys trending towards PPG likely next season.
If you think Marner isn't worth $8M, I have no idea how you'd willingly accept a trade for Draisaitl who's easily $2M overpaid himself.
As I said in my post, I don't think Marner is a complete player yet. I do think that Draisaitl is a more complete player at this point.
If you watch how Draisaitl plays, you'll know that he's not just along for McJesus ride. (Lucic was and that has failed badly).
Also you have to read my comments in context of the thread. I was responding to another post that had Marner at $8M. I clearly stated that he is not there yet. I never said that he was a $8M player. But if the Leafs were crazy enough to give him $8M, I would choose Draisaitl (with his huge overpay.) My point being it would be less than an overpay compared to giving Marner at $8M, but that's my opinion.
As you said, it's not about just points. I don't think Marner is there physically yet, I don't think he's there defensively, and I don't think he's ready to go again the top lines in the league yet. There were times earlier this season where he was lost out there. But as the season progressed, he got better. I'm looking for consistency before I dole out a big long term contract. Marner has another year of development to show that.
In my earlier post (#7), I recommended that Nylander be signed to a bridge deal @ $4.5M. My feelings would be the same for Marner.
Go back and read my original thoughts/post on how the Leafs should proceed and then let me know what you think.
