Paul Kariya autos

I kind of wonder how his career might have been without the concussions he was my favourite player growing up. Of the old BAP autos he did there are some pretty nice ones but most are probably locked away in PCs now. Here's a couple that I have from a long time ago.

I have been looking for a Kariya 8x10 for a bit to add to my growing photo PC, and have had my eye on this one for a bit, I have read up on PSA/DNA and there seems to be mixed reviews. I figured here is a better place than any - does anyone have an opinion on this Kariya auto at all? Or any opinion on PSA/DNA? Thanks in advance,
Dave

Thanks to this topic, I forgot how awesome Kariya & Selanne were as a duo. I was able to get a Kariya Vault auto for cheap.

Looks pretty good to me. I have a few extra 8x10s I can send scans of?

this is the one i got TTM

The only one I have is part of my 'For the Love of the Game' signature series book. He has a great auto - too bad he doesn't use it more!

I think Richard meant that Carey might shy away from the public spotlight in the coming years when it comes to that sort of thing.

I could be wrong though. (correct me if I'm wrong please :) )

But yeah, Carey Price's auto won't become as rare as Kariya's, due to the thousands that are already on the secondary market. So I think Richard was just referring to the privacy thing.

You're probably right so sorry Richard if I mistook it, rereading it that makes sense as well. Hopefully Price doesn't become that guy, he always seemed to be pretty ok, maybe Montreal is finally "getting" to him?

Richard, respect your input and realize you typically use Canadiens and/or Price as your reference point for everything, but this statement is irrelevant here.

Carey Price has over 500 pack-inserted, certified autograph issues as of now, and you're saying in a few years he could end up this way. I would imagine even in a few years time that would add more to that massive number. Paul Kariya has just over 30 autograph issues. That's a vast discrepancy between the two as it stands now and that will be a finite number. You can't take away those Price autos on the market. That's not really going to have anyone wondering why Price has "so few" autographs like Kariya.

Seeing as Kariya doesn't want to be compensated for his signature I don't see that number growing. But, never say never! ;)

Thank you for being the arbiter as to what is relevant and what is not in the hobby, Barrie, I appreciate your input.

As was mentioned previously in the thread after my "irrelevant" comment, he had a pretty bad day at the auto signing in Kelowna last summer but that was just one example (a prominent one) that I've heard when it comes to him signing for the public.

He still does the Frameworth thing and will sign for UD, but for fans who want a good experience meeting him and getting an autograph they may end up frustrated in those efforts. It's entirely possible that it may spill over into those more controlled settings and he decides he just doesn't want to do it anymore.

While it's true that you can't put the genie back in the bottle, and there will be a big stockpile out there, for anybody who wants to get stuff of his going forward that reserved attitude may end up leading him to being like Kariya. It would suck for a lot of fans and collectors.

Lot of people with reading issues on HI these days. Thanks for playing for Richard!

Anybody want an auto'd 8x10 of Kariya? I've got a few I might part with, If you're interested, fire me a PM and I'll send you some scans.

But, Yea, Kariya auto's are VERY few and far between, part of what I like about collecting him, I think I have 2 autographs from cards, but, they are valued highly cause of the rarity.

Cheers!

I think you might have misinterpreted what he meant. I think he meant that Price might end up signing less in the future maybe to the point where he doesn't sign anymore, like Karya. Nothing to do with comparing stats on the numbers of signed cards that exist between the two players.

Irony.

I didn't make it that far in the thread before responding to the commentaries cited above. Different pages and all. :)

I'll raise a Dos Equis to you, though.

There are so few players in the NHL that we can say that about; guys who get a cup of coffee sitting on the bench serving as a backup goalie have dozens more autograph cards than Kariya. Treasure those cards, it doesn't look like we'll see too many more out there since he hasn't had a new auto card in close to a decade (ITG History of Hockey Buybacks notwithstanding).

I'm a big fan of Kariya from back in the day. I'm a little surprised more modern day stars don't emulate his approach to signing and endorsements. They make millions from their salary. I guess it's easy $ for them, but still not sure why they bother. I know their careers are short, but still...
