The Vancouver Canucks have acquired Brandon Sutter and a third-round pick from the Pittsburgh Penguins in exchange for Nick Bonino, Adam Clendening and a 2016 second-round pick.

Seems like fair value all the way across. I really liked Sutter though. Just wish he could have stepped up a little more offensively last season when they needed him. Oh well they save some money and actually have pretty decent 3rd line options now.

Any insight on Clendenning? I have seen a bit of Bonino but wouldn't mind hearing some opinions on him as well.

Canucks are finally tanking. Vrbata, Hamhuis, Sutter and Higgins will be moved this year. Miller, Burrows will be next year.

I'm thinking Dorsett and Sbisa's contracts are to help reach the cap floor in the next few years.

The only thing I don't like about the deal was Vancouver gave up a nice prospect to Chicago for Clendening. Now they just have to sign Sutter to a long term deal.

My best,

Ken

it sucks when your PC guy gets traded to your most hated team, for crying out loud, and any nucks fans want to drop some serious coin on what might be the best Sutter Collection around? lol

My daughter is really disappointed by the trade of Brandon Sutter. This is the second time she has super collected a player she got to meet, only to have the player traded.. That being said, most of her Brandon Sutter collection is up for trade..

The Nucks got a nice player in Sutter. I think the trade was good for both teams, but I really did not want to see Sutter go. You will enjoy his effort and talents in Vancouver..

Clendening gets traded to Vancouver at the end of January 2015. Basically 6 months later, he's traded again.

I find that strange, especially for a young prospect of his calibre. Is there anything, any rumbles out there about him?

I've never heard anything bad about him, so I get the feeling it's one of those Tim Erixon things. Every team knows they have something, it's just up to one team to find out what that thing is.

And the Penguins end up with both in the same summer?

Sutter is good at turning nothing into something. He will be missed for sure and I think he will do well in Vancouver. I think there was a little bit too much pressure to be Jordan Staal, mostly coming from stupid Penguins fans.

Bonino, I think, is very similar to Brandon and is a good depth add.

Moving Sutter freed up enough cap to sign Eric Fehr. Fehr's size will be appreciated greatly in that bottom 6.

Clendening adds to the young defensive depth the Pens already have, and more than replaces Harrington who got moved in the Kessel deal.

Sutter and a 3rd round pick for Bonino, Clendening, Fehr, and a 2nd?

I'd call that a win for the Pens

The main thing I don't like are the picks.. Maybe I'm biased, but I feel it should've been swapped - Van gives up the 3rd, Pitts gives up the 2nd.

The main thing I see from Clendenning moving is that management is going to go all in on Corrado this year. And I'm perfectly fine with that.

Benning said that he wants dependable 2 way centres. He now has Sedin, Sutter and Horvat. This is to counter the skilled teams like Edmonton and Calgary who have young skilled forwards. I see his point, but it means that there's going to be some pretty boring hockey for the Canucks. I guess instead of getting blown out, there might be some close games.

I sort of like that he's giving the young guys a chance. Baertschi is going to get his shot. Up to him to make the most of it. Bonino had his chance and couldn't break 20 goals, despite 2nd PP time.

Also, Benning didn't want 2 young players as the #7 and #8 dmen. Corrado has the #7 spot. Clendening would be pretty much riding the pine and it wouldn't really do him a lot of good. So do like that Benning traded him off where Clendening could have a decent shot of actual ice time.

Tiger, I see your points and justification possibly for moving the players we did, but the overall value isn't there. Now I like Brandon Sutter, i'm excited to have him and Pens fans all around agree he is a valuable asset.

But when I try to dissect this trade, it doesn't make sense any way I put it:

Bonino for Sutter; Clendening and a 2nd for a 3rd?

Or

Bonino and 2nd for Sutter? Clendening for a 3rd

Or

Bonino and Clendening for Sutter?? A 2nd for a 3rd???

Replace "2nd" with Kevin Bieksa and tear even more hair out

I was surprise to see this trade happen

I figured Bonino was staying in Van as he was getting some nice ice time

Ok, update this Pens fan, what's the beef with Erixon???

Locker room cancer??? Party boy...Fools around with other player wives??

I'm repeating what I heard Benning say. Yeah, I know, we're getting hosed on deals. Benning isn't the greatest trader. Gillis was much better. Seems like Benning will overpay to get the guys he thinks the team needs.

The 2nd is supposed to be the Duck's 2nd, and the 3rd is the Canuck's 3rd. Benning said that the guy that you're usually looking at in the late 2nd is around in the 3rd.

Couldn't agree less!!! Usually we talk about an east coast bias but I think we are seeing a west coast bias. Anyone who has watched Sutter knows he is by far the best player in this deal. Benning won this trade big time. Pittsburg would probably admit they lost the trade except it freed up money for Fehr which means both teams win.

The Third rounder is actually Buffalo's pick that was the compensation for Buffalo hiring Dan Bylsma.

It's pretty much the completion of the Kesler trade. Rumor was that the Canucks coveted Sutter and wanted him back in any type of Kesler deal. Kesler of course had veto power over any trade and would only go to Anaheim. Kesler goes to Anaheim, Canucks get Brandon Sutter.

I just don't like the face we got stuck with Luca Sbisa, but that's for another thread...
