Capitals trade Dillon to Jets for pair of 2nd-rounders

The Washington Capitals traded blue-liner Brenden Dillon to the Winnipeg Jets for a second-round pick in 2022 and 2023, reports TSN's Darren Dreger.

Dillon, 30, has three years left on his contract, which carries a $3.9-million annual cap hit. He registered two goals and 17 assists in 56 games this past season while averaging 18:57, but the 6-foot-4, 225-pound rearguard is known more for his defensive abilities.

Panthers ship Stralman to Coyotes

The Florida Panthers have traded veteran defenseman Anton Stralman, prospect Vladislav Kolyachonok, and a 2024 second-round pick to the Arizona Coyotes for a 2023 seventh-rounder, the teams announced Monday.

Stralman, 34, has one year left on his contract carrying a $5.5-million cap hit, per CapFriendly. He agreed to waive his modified no-trade clause to facilitate the move, according to TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

The Panthers now project to have over $11.5 million in cap space. They re-signed RFA Sam Bennett on Monday, but still have to come to terms with RFA Sam Reinhart.

Jets re-sign Stastny to 1-year, $3.75M deal

The Winnipeg Jets re-signed forward Paul Stastny to a one-year contract worth $3.75 million, the team announced Monday.

Stastny, 35, scored 13 goals and added 16 assists last season. It was his first campaign back with the club after spending two seasons with the Vegas Golden Knights. Stastny played with the Jets for 19 regular-season games in 2018 when he was acquired at the trade deadline.

At five-on-five last season, Stastny ranked third among Jets skaters with a 49.89 Corsi For rating and fourth with a 49.69 expected goals for percentage.

Keith Yandle signs with Philadelphia.

Unrestricted free agent defenseman Keith Yandle is set to sign a one-year, $900,000 contract with the Philadelphia Flyers, reports Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

The Florida Panthers bought out the final two seasons of Yandle's contract earlier this month, allowing him to hit the open market.

Seattle traded MacDermid to the Avs, so forget what I said about his Kraken jersey being a big seller.

Ugh, they better make a huge splash in free agency. Seattle fans can turn off on a team in an instant especially if they aren’t very good. And for the prices they are charging, they better come out swinging and win some games.

Nate Schmidt traded to Winnipeg for a third round pick.

The Vancouver Canucks traded blue-liner Nate Schmidt to the Winnipeg Jets in exchange for a 2022 third-round pick, the teams announced Tuesday.

Schmidt waived his no-trade clause to facilitate the deal.

There are four seasons remaining on the 30-year-old's contract, which carries an annual cap hit of $5.95 million, according to CapFriendly.

The Canucks acquired Schmidt from the Vegas Golden Knights last offseason for a 2022 third-round pick, meaning Vancouver essentially rented him for one year.

His lone season with the Canucks didn't go as planned, as he recorded just 15 points over 54 games, and Schmidt's underlying numbers plummeted.

Tampa sends Tyler Johnson and 2nd round to Chicago for Brent Seabrook's contract.

The Tampa Bay Lightning traded forward Tyler Johnson and a 2023 second-round pick to the Chicago Blackhawks in exchange for Brent Seabrook's contract, the team announced Tuesday.

Seabrook ended his playing career in March due to a hip injury. His contract, which has three years remaining with an average annual value of $6.875 million, can be placed on the long-term injured reserve where it won't count against the salary cap. The Lightning will be able to accumulate about $1.8 million in additional cap space with Seabrook on the LTIR, according to Sportsnet's Chris Johnston.

There are three years left on Johnson's deal, which carries an annual cap hit of $5 million. The Lightning have been trying to move his contract for some time, as he cleared waivers prior to the start of the 2020-21 campaign.

The 30-year-old forward is coming off the worst season of his career after registering eight goals and 14 assists over 55 games. He added seven points in 23 playoff contests while playing primarily on the fourth line during Tampa Bay's Stanley Cup repeat.

However, Johnson was highly productive during his prime. From 2013-14 to 2018-19 he averaged 25 goals and 30 assists per 82 games.

Even though the Lightning were eager to get rid of Johnson, his departure creates a hole down the middle of the team's lineup since the Seattle Kraken selected fellow center Yanni Gourde in the expansion draft.

Avalanche re-sign Landeskog to 8-year contract reportedly worth $56M

The captain is staying put.

The Colorado Avalanche re-signed Gabriel Landeskog to a maximum-length eight-year contract, the team announced Tuesday.

The deal carries an annual cap hit of $7 million, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

The contract also includes a full no-movement clause over the first four years, then a modified no-trade clause over the last four seasons, a source told The Athletic's Peter Baugh.

The two sides came to an agreement just in the nick of time, as Tuesday at midnight ET was the deadline for teams to re-sign players to eight-year contracts. Afterward, the maximum is seven years.

Landeskog was one of the top pending unrestricted free agents set to hit the open market.

Panthers bring back Montour on 3-year deal with $3.5M AAV

The Florida Panthers re-signed defenseman Brandon Montour to a three-year contract with an annual cap hit of $3.5 million, reports TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

Montour recorded 18 points over 50 games last season split between the Panthers and Sabres. Florida acquired him from Buffalo prior to the 2021 trade deadline in exchange for a third-round pick.

The 27-year-old uses his excellent skating to drive offense at a high rate, but his defending is suspect.

Canadiens bring back Armia on 4-year deal

The Montreal Canadiens re-signed pending unrestricted free-agent forward Joel Armia to a four-year contract extension carrying an annual cap hit of $3.4 million, the team announced Tuesday.

Armia, 28, recorded seven goals and seven assists in 41 games while averaging 14:42 of ice time per contest. It was his least productive season - on a per game basis - since joining the Habs in 2018-19.

The 6-foot-4, 210-pound winger added five goals and three assists in 21 games during Montreal's run to the Stanley Cup Final.

Bruins re-sign Mike Reilly to 3-year, $9M pact

The Boston Bruins are bringing back defenseman Mike Reilly on a three-year contract carrying an annual cap hit of $3 million, a source told TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

Reilly was set to be among the top available unrestricted free-agent defensemen.

The smooth-skating 28-year-old recorded 27 points over 55 games last season split between the Bruins and Ottawa Senators.

Blue Jackets' Laine accepts 1-year qualifying offer

Columbus Blue Jackets sniper Patrik Laine accepted his one-year, $7.5-million qualifying offer, according to Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman.

The qualifying offer is based on the player's previous salary. So while Laine's prior annual cap hit was $6.75 million, the total salary in 2020-21 was $7.5 million. His qualifying offer will be $7.5 million again next season.

Laine played just one game with the Winnipeg Jets last year before he and Jack Roslovic were dealt for Pierre-Luc Dubois and a third-round pick.

The 23-year-old's first season in Columbus didn't go as expected. He recorded just 10 goals and 11 assists in 45 contests, the worst point-per-game mark of his career.

Martinez re signs with Las Vegas

The Vegas Golden Knights are signing defenseman Alec Martinez to a three-year contract extension with an average annual value of $5.25 million, reports Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli.

Martinez was eligible for unrestricted free agency this offseason.

Vegas acquired Martinez from the Los Angeles Kings prior to the 2020 trade deadline for two second-round picks. He slotted in on the Golden Knights' blue line as a strong support piece behind stars Alex Pietrangelo and Shea Theodore.

Barrie re signs with Edmonton.

The Edmonton Oilers are bringing back unrestricted free-agent defenseman Tyson Barrie on a three-year contract with an average annual value of $4.5 million, according to TSN's Ryan Rishaug.

Barrie signed a one-year, $3.75-million deal with the Oilers last offseason. He led all NHL defensemen with 48 points in the shortened 2020-21 season, quarterbacking Edmonton's elite power play alongside Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl.

The 30-year-old blue-liner notched 23 of his points on the man advantage and averaged over 21 minutes of ice time per contest.

Hyman joins the Oilers on a seven year deal.

The Edmonton Oilers will sign unrestricted free-agent forward Zach Hyman to a seven-year contract carrying a $5.5-million cap hit, reports TSN's Darren Dreger.

The pact includes a no-move clause for the first five years and a modified no-move clause for the final two, Dreger adds.

Hyman is one of the bigger names on the free-agent market. He notched 15 goals and 18 assists over 43 games with the Toronto Maple Leafs this past season.

The 29-year-old frequently played in the Maple Leafs' top six on the wing of either Auston Matthews or John Tavares.

Toronto gave Hyman permission to speak with other teams earlier in the offseason.

He spent his first six campaigns with the Maple Leafs, who acquired him from the Florida Panthers in 2015.

Maple Leafs land Mrazek on 3-year deal with $3.8M AAV

The Toronto Maple Leafs are signing unrestricted free-agent goaltender Petr Mrazek to a three-year contract carrying an average annual value of $3.8 million, reports TSN's Darren Dreger.

Mrazek is expected to form a tandem alongside incumbent Toronto netminder Jack Campbell; Campbell emerged as the Maple Leafs' starter while Frederik Andersen struggled with performance and injuries last season.

Andersen, an unrestricted free agent, is expected to sign elsewhere once the market officially opens Wednesday.

Blackhawks trade Zadorov to Flames for 3rd-round pick

The Chicago Blackhawks have traded defenseman Nikita Zadorov to the Calgary Flames for a 2022 third-round pick, the team announced Wednesday.

Zadorov is a restricted free agent and received a $3.2-million qualifying offer from the Blackhawks earlier this week, according to CapFriendly.

The 26-year-old spent one season with the Blackhawks after they acquired him from the Colorado Avalanche in a trade last October. He notched one goal and seven assists while laying 190 hits in 55 games in 2020-21.

Selected 16th overall by the Buffalo Sabres in the 2013 NHL Draft, Zadorov has played in 411 career games, scoring 23 goals and adding 60 assists.

The Edmonton Oilers are dealling defenseman Ethan Bear to the Carolina Hurricanes for forward Warren Foegele.

Senators trade Dadonov to Golden Knights for Holden, 3rd-round pick

The Ottawa Senators traded forward Evgenii Dadonov to the Vegas Golden Knights for defenseman Nick Holden and a third-round pick in 2022, the team announced Wednesday.

Dadonov has two seasons remaining on his contract with a $5-million cap hit. He joined the Senators for the 2020-21 campaign after six seasons with the Florida Panthers.

He notched 20 points in 55 games for Ottawa, and has 222 points in 335 NHL contests. His best years came in 2018 and 2019, when he posted 65 and 70 points, respectively.

Hurricanes re-sign Martinook to 3-year, $5.4M deal

The Carolina Hurricanes inked forward Jordan Martinook to a three-year contract with an average annual value of $1.8 million, reports TSN's Pierre LeBrun.

Martinook was a pending unrestricted free agent after his two-year, $4-million pact with Carolina expired.

The 29-year-old has spent the last three seasons with the Hurricanes. The Arizona Coyotes drafted him in 2012, and he played four campaigns in the desert.

Martinook has posted 13 points the last two seasons. He averaged 12:45 in ice time across 44 contests in 2020-21.

Also of note - Buffalo has done zilch. At this point they'll be promoting their AHL team to the NHL while Eichel sits.
