Pre-season trades and signings

Oilers sign Cody Ceci

The Edmonton Oilers signed defenseman Cody Ceci to a four-year contract with an average annual value of $3.25 million, the team announced Wednesday.

Ceci, 27, spent last season with the Pittsburgh Penguins. He scored four goals and added 13 assists in 53 games while averaging 18:31 of ice time.

Ceci has struggled at both ends of the ice at times throughout his career but had a strong 2020-21 campaign with the Penguins.

The Oilers' defense is set to look quite different next season following the additions of Ceci and Duncan Keith. The club also recently parted ways with Adam Larsson, Ethan Bear, and Caleb Jones.

Kraken trade Vanecek to the Capitals for a 2nd pick (Wpg) in 2023

The Seattle Kraken traded goaltender Vitek Vanecek back to the Washington Capitals on Wednesday for a 2023 second-round pick.

Seattle selected Vanecek from the Capitals in the expansion draft but no longer needed his services after it added former Colorado Avalanche netminder Philipp Grubauer on a six-year, $35.4-million deal Wednesday. The Kraken also have Chris Driedger to share the crease.

The 25-year-old Vanecek posted a .908 save percentage and a 2.69 goals-against average in 37 games during his rookie campaign in 2020-21. He's expected to battle for starts with Ilya Samsonov.

The Kraken have been widely criticized for their expansion draft strategy, and this deal highlights the club's mismanagement. Seattle passed on Washington defenseman Brenden Dillon - who was recently traded for two second-round picks - in the expansion draft in favor of Vanecek. So essentially, the Kraken missed out on a free second-round pick.

Kuemper traded to Colorado.

The Colorado Avalanche have found their replacement for Philipp Grubauer.

The Arizona Coyotes have dealt goaltender Darcy Kuemper to the Avs in exchange for defenseman Conor Timmins, a 2022 first-round pick, and a 2024 conditional third-round pick.

Grubauer, the former Avs starter, signed a six-year deal with the Seattle Kraken on Wednesday.

Kuemper is in the final year of his contract, which carries a $4.5-million cap hit, but the Coyotes are retaining $1 million, per Sportsnet's Chris Johnston.

The 31-year-old is coming off a down year by his standards, as he posted a .907 save percentage and a 2.56 goals-against average in 27 games. He also battled injuries throughout the campaign.

However, in the three seasons prior, Kuemper owned a .924 save percentage and a 2.35 goals-against average in 113 appearances. He finished fourth in the league in goals saved above average in 2018-19 and 2019-20, receiving down-ballot Vezina Trophy votes each year.

The 6-foot-5 Saskatchewan native also helped Canada win gold at the 2021 World Championship, posting a .916 save percentage and a 2.17 goals-against average in eight games.

Timmins, meanwhile, was chosen 32nd overall by the Avalanche in 2017. The 6-foot-2 right-handed blue-liner has registered seven assists in 33 career NHL games.

Coyotes have now acquired two first-round picks, six second-rounders, two third-round selections, and a pair of seventh-round picks so far this offseason as they continue to rebuild.

Oilers trade Bear to Hurricanes for Foegele

The Edmonton Oilers are dealling defenseman Ethan Bear to the Carolina Hurricanes for forward Warren Foegele.

Good move for both teams. Carolina has been switching up D-men for a few weeks and Bear will benefit the change with other Edmonton D-men coming up that have “better potential”. Still young and he played good last year with tough minutes. He will be a better Skjei...more points at least.

I like Foegele. Carolina has some talent depth in the position and some prospects looking to move up, or get more ice time. Foegele is a good player that is better than his lineup position (3rd line?) and his play shows it. Hardly turns over the puck when having possession, digs the corners, hits the boards, and can dish or put the biscuit home. I see him playing that 3rd line in Edmonton but getting a chance on playing the 2nd every now and then. His stats will be bumped up next year.

Nice 1-1 trade.

Flyers announce Carter Hart has signed 3-year contract.

The Philadelphia Flyers signed goaltender Carter Hart to a three-year deal with an average annual value of $3.979 million, the team announced Monday.

Hart was a restricted free agent this offseason after his entry-level contract expired.

The soon-to-be 23-year-old has long been touted as one of the best young goaltenders in the sport but is coming off a dreadful 2020-21. Hart's stats dropped considerably in his third campaign after showing significant promise in his first two NHL seasons.

Rangers re-sign Shesterkin to 4-year deal with reported $5.65M AAV

The New York Rangers inked goaltender Igor Shesterkin to a four-year contract.

It carries an average annual value of $5.65 million, reports Daily Faceoff's Frank Seravalli. That would be the largest second contract ever given to an NHL netminder, Seravalli adds.

Shesterkin was a restricted free agent. The 25-year-old went 16-14-3 with a .916 save percentage in 2021, his second NHL campaign.

The Russian puck-stopper ranked ninth among NHL goalies in both goals saved above expected (7.81) and goals saved above average (7.46) at five-on-five this past season.

Capitals re-sign Samsonov to 1-year deal

The Washington Capitals re-signed goaltender Ilya Samsonov to a one-year contract worth $2 million, the team announced Monday.

Samsonov was a restricted free agent this offseason. The 24-year-old was previously expected to become Washington's No. 1 netminder but his 2020-21 season was interrupted by a positive COVID-19 test that sidelined him for weeks.

Samsonov ultimately appeared in 19 games and posted a .902 save percentage after owning a .913 clip in 26 contests during his rookie season a year prior.

Svechnikov has signed a new eight-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes

There's a love affair going on in Raleigh, and the partners just made a serious commitment. Winger Andrei Svechnikov has signed a new eight-year contract with the Carolina Hurricanes worth $62 million and a very tidy cap hit of $7.7 million per season.

That's great value for a 21-year-old who is about to enter the prime years of his career and with Svechnikov's excellent combination of power and skill (some folks have already rechristened 'The Michigan' lacrosse goal as 'The Svechnikov,' but don't say that if you're in Ann Arbor), Carolina looks to have a top-end contributor locked up for a long time now – just as they planned.

"From Day 1 we were always talking long-term," said Carolina president/GM Don Waddell. "That was the good part; we were always on the same page."

Coming off his three-year rookie deal, Svechnikov easily could have signed a bridge contract of two or three seasons, as is common with many young stars these days. But the big kid knows what he has in Carolina and is excited to build on the team's recent success.

Flyers extend Couturier for 8 years

The Philadelphia Flyers signed forward Sean Couturier to an eight-year extension with an average annual value of $7.75 million, the team announced Thursday.

The contract goes into effect in the 2022-23 season. The first seven years of the deal have a full no-movement clause, while the final year includes a modified 21-team no-trade list, according to The Associated Press' Stephen Whyno.

Couturier has developed into one of the league's most well-rounded centers during the last few campaigns. He put up 18 goals and 23 assists in 45 games last season.

"As one of the premier two-way centers in the NHL, Sean has the rare talent to shut down opposing team's top players while also contributing at a high offensive level," general manager Chuck Fletcher said. "Throughout his 10-year career with the Flyers, he has proven to be the ultimate teammate. He carries an enormous presence inside our dressing room due to his preparation, determination, and drive to win."

Flyers sign Brassard to 1-year contract

The Philadelphia Flyers signed forward Derick Brassard to a one-year contract worth $825,000, the team announced Wednesday.

Brassard, 33, spent last season with the Arizona Coyotes. He registered eight goals and 12 assists in 53 contests.

The center played for a handful of teams over the last few seasons, spending time with the Ottawa Senators, Pittsburgh Penguins, Florida Panthers, Colorado Avalanche, and New York Islanders since 2016. He also had stints with the New York Rangers and Columbus Blue Jackets earlier in his career.

Brassard played under Flyers head coach Alain Vigneault while with the Rangers and was a part of the roster that made it to the Stanley Cup Final in 2014.

Hurricanes tender offer sheet to Canadiens' Kotkaniemi

The Carolina Hurricanes filed an offer sheet for Montreal Canadiens forward Jesperi Kotkaniemi on Saturday.

It's a one-year, $6,100,015 contract. The Canadiens have seven days to match, and will get a first- and third-round pick if they choose not to do so.

Kotkaniemi is a restricted free agent

It will be tough more Montreal to match without dumping some salary, even with Weber on LTI.

My best,

Senators re-sign Filip Gustavsson to 2-year deal

The Ottawa Senators are bringing back goaltender Filip Gustavsson on a two-year contract.

Gustavsson was a restricted free agent. The first year of his new deal is of the two-way variety, but the second is one way at an $825,000 cap hit.

The 23-year-old went 5-1-2 with a .933 save percentage over nine games with Ottawa as a rookie last season. He also posted a .910 save percentage in 13 contests with the Senators' AHL affiliate in Belleville in 2021, having spent parts of the last four campaigns with the farm club.

Gustavsson will likely enter the 2021-22 campaign behind Matt Murray and Anton Forsberg on Ottawa's goaltending depth chart.

The Senators have three remaining RFAs in forwards Brady Tkachuk, Drake Batherson, and Logan Brown.

Wild ink Jordie Benn to 1-year deal

The Minnesota Wild signed defenseman Jordie Benn to a one-year contract worth $900,000, the team announced Friday.

Benn spent last season with the Winnipeg Jets and Vancouver Canucks. The 34-year-old collected one goal and nine assists in 39 games while also blocking 51 shots.

The blue-liner is a veteran of 556 career games, scoring 24 goals and adding 103 assists. Benn's also managed 670 hits and 908 blocked shots.

Flames ink Dube to 3-year deal

The Calgary Flames signed forward Dillon Dube to a three-year contract with an average annual value of $2.3 million, the team announced Thursday.

Dube was a restricted free agent this offseason upon the expiry of his entry-level contract. Calgary drafted him 56th overall in 2016.

The 23-year-old is coming off the most productive season of his career. He notched 22 points in 51 games while averaging over 13 minutes of ice time per contest - all personal bests.

With Dube signed, defenseman Connor Mackey is Calgary's only remaining RFA. The Flames have approximately $3 million in cap space, according to Cap Friendly.
