This happened a couple weeks ago, but I wasn't aware of it until today, nor could I have pieces 2 and 2 together before the weekend when I found some info out. Apparently Roy had a discussion with someone on Twitter about his PC, and noted that the Moment of Truth auto wasn't his autograph and then accused Topps of forgery.
Here's where it gets interesting. Nelson's noted that the only UFC autograph deal in place was in 2009, and he hand numbered every autograph he signed. That's why his Ultimate Fighter autos have a disclosed print run.
You might also notice that all of Nelson's autographs have the old style Topps metallic sticker.
I wasn't aware of this until the weekend, but apparently, Topps was in negotiation to create an IFL card set back in 2007-2008 before the promotion folded. Topps had gone so far as to obtain autographs from many of the fighters. Here's what it gets interesting...here's a partial list of fighters that were with the old style (not as holographic) silver sticker signatures in UFC products and which auto sets have them
-Bart Palaszewski - Moment of Truth
-Matt Horwich - Round 2
-Mike Ciesnolevicz - Round 2
-Roy Nelson - Round 4, Moment of Truth (half his name, half "Big Country")
-Chris Horodecki - Title Shot
-Vladimir Matyushenko - Round 4, Moment of Truth
-Marco Ruas (Coach) - Knockout 2010
-Pat Miletich (Coach) - Round 2, Knockout 2010 auto'd shirts
-Bas Rutten (Coach) - Knockout 2010 auto'd shirts / Premium Pieces
-Don Frye (Coach) - Knockout 2010 auto'd shirts
All of these fighters were associated with the IFL at the time the set was being kicked about. I would say it's reasonable, as such, to expect that all Topps was simply recycling these autos as they saw fit, not unlike UD and World of Sport.
Matyushenko's autos are particularly telling in terms of when these stickers might have been signed. Some of his Moment of Truth autographs are signed with the older style "Vladdy Matyushenko" as opposed to the more standard "VMAT" or single "Vladimirmatyushenko" squiggle he has been doing for the last couple years.
In a roundabout way, the accusation is hilarious, and well, baseless. It's as quirky as that song "I'm my own grandpa" Nelson's essentially accusing Topps of forging his own autos that he'd previously provided them with.
On a side note...about 6 months ago, I gave his wife Jessica the name and number of somebody at eBay that could assist him with getting fake autographs of his taken off the website, but now that I think about it, I might have given him the access number to get his own legitimate autographs taken off the marketplace
