He doesn't?

Passes Super Mario and ties Stevie Y in the same game for career goals, PLUS back to back hat tricks! DAYUM!

I feel catching 99 is inevitable at this point for Ovie.

Does he catch Gartner this season? Messier is next at 694 and than Gartner at 708. Caps are now starting their off week and have 33 games remaining. He has to sit out the next game due to skipping the all star game. Which means he needs 16 goals in 32 games to tie Gartner this season.

While possibly breaking Gretzky's goal scoring record is a monumental accomplishment, Im holding off anointing Ovie as the greatest ever just yet (as some fans out there in the hockey world seem to be). First lets see if he actually breaks the record. Its not a given by any means. Lets also note the All time Points record is very very safe in Gretzky's hands with Ovie sitting currently in 38th place with Sid breathing down his neck only a few points behind. And Gretzky will likely still have more assists than Ovie has total points once his career is finished. The greatest of the greats also make those around them better. He may possibly be the goal scoring king when all is said and done but he wont get close to all time points. Which I argue is a more meaningful record overall. Like the NBA, the all time points crown is the biggest one.
Id also like to see him score 50 in less than 39 and a few dozen other records of Gretzky's be broken by him before he is crowned hockeys king. He's awesome there's no doubt. One of the greats all time certainly. But Im not sure in the end he bumps Gretzky from the biggest throne even if he does break the goals record.

He very well could!

I agree, I don't think he's the best ever. Gretzky will always hold that spot for me.

But Ovi is (in my opinion) the best pure goal-scorer all all-time. The numbers he's put up in the era he's playing in, it's tough to argue against it.

Best pure goal scorer ever, by far. Not even close. I hope he does catch Wayne, simply because he is the best goal scorer. Even Wayne has said in the past he hopes people break his records.

Cory

Gretzky will always be known as the greatest player of all time. Times have changed though, dramatically. Equipment has changed dramatically from sticks to pads. Player talent has changed dramatically from Germany and Kazakhstan and now even Japan getting in the mix.

That having been said Ovechkin is the best pure goal-scorer right now and hopefully ever. McDavid is probably the best player right now but it is too early to call that one.

Good for Ovie, I've been cheering for him since his rookie season. I think he is much better than Crosby. I think Malkin is better than Crosby. Ovie has not had a Malkin to play with since his rookie season so he has had to work harder than Crosby in my opinion.

Great to see for Ovie, regardless.

Oh, I wanted to add that Gartner is one of my favourite players ever. As much as I would like Gartner to retain a record I wouldn't mind seeing Ovie surpass him. I met Gartner some 20+ years ago in my small town of 27,000 when he was watching his son play a Baseball game. I got his autograph on.. I think a 93-94 Ultra Fleer card and I still have it to this day. It was my 2nd in-person autograph with Bobby Orr being my 1st as a child. Will always hold an affinity for Mike Gartner.

I think he will catch Gartner, I think he has another 20-25 regular season goals left in him this year and catching the great one? Well we shall see, will be fun to watch, like Aaron chasing Ruth’s record

All valid points however just imagine Ovie playing in the 80’s

He's never going to go down as the greatest player of all time, but greatest goal scorer? Maybe he will. If he ends up with the all-time goal record (or at least gets really close to it.... without playing in the high scoring 80s) the argument will be there.

I hope he can pull it off. I'm not convinced the he can actually do it - because one of these years, you have to think he takes a step back. Of course he's not showing any signs of aging yet.... so maybe?

He's got 34 goals in 49 games this year. I'll undersell his pace, and suggest he scores another 18 before the end of the season. That puts him at 710, two ahead of Gartner, and 7th all time.

He only scored 33 in 2016-17, and 49 in 2017-18. He broke 50 in each of the other 4 seasons in the last 6... and is one pace to do that again. 5 50+ goal seasons in the last 7 years? How long can he keep that up?

He'll be 35 years old when next season starts, and for the sake of argument I'll go with my number from before.... he starts the 20-21 season 710 career goals. Can he average 50 a year, for another two years?

If he's starting the 22-23 season with 810 in his career, he'll already be 2nd in all time goals.... 37 years old, and 84 off the all time mark. That's where I think it gets dicey, as far as record chasing goes. Hypothetically: If he can score 50 at age 36, there's no reason to believe he's going to drop to 20 at age 37..... but what? when?

If he's 38 years old (entering the 23-34 season) and is 60 (or less) back of Gretzky.... then I think the record is his, if he wants it. Unless he completely falls a cliff... the idea that a 38-39-40 year old Ovechkin can bang out a few 25 goals seasons is VERY likely - if he wants to keep playing.

I'm not ready to call it inevitable yet. A day is coming when Ovechkin won't be a 50 goals scorer anymore.... or even a 40 goal scorer. If that's still three years away, yeah. He probably breaks the record. If that happens next year, or the year after, it's going to be hard.

Ovy is definitely a machine, playing over 1100 games with his style with really no injuries. He is the best modern day scorer, I still don’t think best all time but it’s so hard to compare areas. Took Ovy 218 more games to catch Mario which is 2 and a half full seasons. I hope he don’t beat Gretzky all time record but I will applaud him if he does. I love watching him play, I enjoy his hits as much as his goals.

I hope he breaks it, it would be absolutely terrific for the growth of the game!

Best. Goal Scorer. Ever.

Even if you're take into account different eras, that won't be true until he passes Gretzky. The old guard of the NHL and older fans will never let go of Gretzky being the GOAT goal scorer because he is number 1.

Gretzky is clearly the best player of all time. But a case can easily be made for Bure, Bossy or Lemieux being superior goal scorers, along with Ovechkin. The one thing that separates Ovechkin from Gretzky is longevity and consistency. Gretzky scored 43% of his career goals in a five year span during the highest scoring era of all time. Ovechkin on the other hand is one of the most consistent goal scorers of all time.

One of the most consistent, and best.
