I don't have a link but he came out and said he was testing free agency this summer. As a Nashville fan, how do you feel about this? I haven't watched THAT much preds hockey, but I'm not sure how good he is without Weber. Am I wrong to question his abilities?
 
I think he is a very solid dman who is under rated, if he played on a big market team, he would be seen in a totally different light. He also gets over shadowed by another really good dman on Nashville. I can see him ending up in Detroit if Lidstrom does not return next year, he would not be a replacement for Lidstrom but he certainly could fill the Rafalski role.
 
my opinion on Suter is he is going to get overpaid. i think he's a good player and he is smart to go to UFA because there will be a frenzy for him and he will cash in. if Nashville is smart they will re-sign Weber and let Suter go.

in my estimation, if Doughty is worth $7M, Suter is worth $5.5M and Weber is worth at least $7M.

Did he actually say he's going to test the market? I know he said he wasn't going to sign a contract during the season because he felt it would be a distraction. That could mean, A)I'm going to test the market or B)Let's wait for our season ends and then we can talk.

In the past, I've heard people say that Weber played better when he was playing with Suter.

Anyhow, I would love to see Columbus offering him a massive contract. Not sure if he is willing to go there though. But I do think they would offer him the most money as they have to over pay to bring players in(Commodore,Huselius,Wiz, etc). So if money talks then who knows. Columbus do have some big contracts ending(Huselius,Prospal,Martinek,and Pahllson which is give or take around $12 mil) so they can use that money towards Suter.

Would like him in Edmonton as well. They need a D badly and would fit in nicely in the rebuild.

I could see Columbus offering $6+ for him. Now is the extra .5 worth it for Suter to consider Columbus?

do you really think Columbus would spend almost $12M/year on a Suter/Wisniewski combination?

that Wisniewski signing is going to be an albatross for that organization for a long, long time.

btw, do you think Columbus would be interested in a Bernier/Martinez for Carter/Sanford?

Yes I do as our number 1 need is a defensemen and a goalie. The minute Wiz signed that deal, I knew it was a overpayment and he wasn't going to earn his money. But like I said earlier, they have to over pay to bring in players. I'm not mad at bringing him in though. Yeah, this season for him was a disapppointment but I'm sure he'll eventually get better and help the team.

Not sure, might want a pick as well. Maybe like a 3rd rounder. How good is Martinez? Would you do Jack Johnson for Carter straight up? Rumour was Howson was close to trading for/going hard after Johnson a week before LA locked him up long term.
 
ahh i see the problem here... Ryan Sutter maybe going FA, however Ryan SUTER never said this. he said he doesn't think he'll resign before the trade deadline. personally, i'd trade him to an eastern con. team, like, Monday morning. Preds have oodles of talent on defense. he wants the Preds to bring in more offense, fine. do it via trading him. i'm sick of hearing it from this drama queen. just go already.

I wouldn't take JJ for Carter. We need a shut down defenseman not at Jack Johnson who hasn't ever posted a positive +/- on a good team. I don't get Columbus fans obsession with JJ. I think Wiz plays a very similar game to Johnson.

I could see us going after Suter, but I don't think he'll come to Columbus. I think the previous posts about Suter in Detroit is probably where he ends up.

i think Martinez is a quality NHL d-man. he's a good 5/6 and very good on the power play. the only reason the Kings would trade him is because they have Doughty/Johnson/Voynov as their three puck-movers plus Hickey and others coming.

i am a huge Jack Johnson fan and he has a great contract so i don't know if i personally would do that trade. Carter is what the Kings need but that contract is tough to take on. Johnson's +/- never looks good, but that stat is overrated. to be honest, if i had to choose between Doughty and his $7M or Johnson and his $4.25M, i would take Johnson.

CLM gets their goalie of the present and future that is signed to a good # for another year and will still be a RFA. they get a quality d-man to help their #2 PP and play 15 minutes a night. plus they dump a tough contract and a player that doesn't want to be there and a backup goalie.

the Kings get the goal scorer they covet and the vet backup for Quick for the playoff run. it would be tough to let Bernier go, but it looks like Quick is the real deal and they Kings still have three quality goalies in the system that could be ready in the next year or two.

i don't know Columbus that well, but if their issue is a shut-down d-man, Johnson isn't that guy. he can do it, but that's not his strength.

but Johnson just turned 25, has great offensive skill and is super durable and improving defensively. his development was thrown off by going to Michigan and an injury in his first year, but he filled in for Doughty as the #1 d-man when Doughty missed time due to contract and injury and he outperformed Doughty in that role.

but if i'm Columbus, i'd trade Carter before it's too late. he looks disinterested and you don't want to pay him $5.2M for ten more years. if you could get a Bernier/Martinez for him, you fill two needs for very little money and free up $3M+/year to spend on Suter or someone else.
 
I read 2 different versions of what Suter said. Nick Constanika (sp?) and Tim Pannaccio from Philly both wrote Suter said he wouldn't sign with anyone until the summer. Kevin Allen of USA today wrote Suter said he would wait until after the season but there was still time to get something done. He also added Suter said what was done at the deadline for Nashville will help determine his decision. If a Red Wing player said that I would trade him myself. You are either committed to the franchise or you are not. I see him going to Philly at the deadline and going UFA to Detroit in the offseason unless he absolutely loves the Flyers.
I would think he wants to be on a winner and will want both a good contract and a winning team. I don't think he'll go to CBJ but that's just me.

So another board, a Kings fan offered, Bernier,Stoll(possible salary dump), Martinez, and a conditional 2013 first.
A lot of the Columbus fans were against it. Felt Bernier only has potential and hasn't proved anything yet. Questioned how well he would do behind a poor Columbus team. Fans wanted more of a core/already established player and you guessed it, they asked for Johnson.

If Howson decides that they will rebuild and start over then I can see him taking your proposal. If Howson doesn't want to rebuild, I can see him passing. I think he would want another established player coming back.

yeah, Stoll would be a flat out salary dump. i don't see the need to add Stoll - i think the Kings would like to keep him for the playoffs. he is a UFA this summer and i don't think he'll be back.

it's true that Bernier hasn't played a lot, but when he has played he has been very good. he basically saved the Kings season last year when Quick stumbled. he's a #1 and a significant upgrade over Mason.

i wouldn't trade Johnson for Carter straight up. Johnson is signed to a great deal and Carter's deal is a killer. i think Columbus is in a tough situation - do you really want to pay a guy another $52M to be unhappy?

getting a #1 goalie and a minimum 5/6 d-man with power play ability is a lot for an unhappy, underproducing Jeff Carter. i don't know if there would be a better offer out there - we'll see as i think he'll get traded.

btw, i think Carter is very talented and that isn't the issue. it's the contract and the potential attitude issues.

I think that Suter is a very good d-man. Whether he signs before the end of the season, after the season, is traded or stays he'll get paid by somebody, and whoever does it will be getting a top of the line rearguard.

being from the STL area, this reeks of what Albert Pujols said. and now he is in the sunny confines of Cali for the next 10 years...
 
If you are wondering how good Suter is and how well he can play without Weber just go back and watch the Olympic footage from 2010 - he was unreal. He is very underrated in my opinion - then again he is going to sign a massive contract most likely so at least the people in the know appreciate his game.

If Doughty is the benchmark at $7mil - I wouldn't expect the Suter contract to be much south of that if at all. Unless he gives someone a hometown discount but last I checked Madison/Wisconsin doesn't have an NHL team.

He does seem like the kind of guy that would take a little bit less to be on a winning team though - I can see him ending up in Detroit at a mil less than what the market would have offered.
