shipping costs?????

hi folks,
was just taking a look on ebay and came across an auction for a card of gerry cheevers . starting bid was 95. so far so good. checked the cost of shipping,

15.25. if you want insurance it will be extra (not cheap). seller has a rating of 100%. i don,t get it, what happened to ebay cracking down on sellers that overcharge on shipping????? did that idea go down the drain?? i don,t mind bidding higher for a card i want, but to see the seller charging 15.25 just to save on ebay costs pisses me off.
 
the problem is that he,s going to be spending 2.50 for sure.he didn,t say anything about regs.mail . by the way that,s to canada
 
Kosta - sometimes, when I see a card I want in an auction, and the shipping is an outrageous amount, I e-mail the seller and ask if the shipping charge noted is correct. Each time (it's probably happened 10 times) they write back with a much more reasonable shipping cost.
 
about 2 months ago i emailed a seller asking if i was correct in seeing the shipping cost was (15.25) his reply was YEP with no explanation was to why, so my question is, wasn,t ebay supposed to crack down on that type of practice???
 
I won't bid on any card that has more than $3 for shipping. I will pay for insured shipping if I have to but only the exact amount.
 
what he,s charging and what is costs him 2.50 at best is not the same thing as 15.00, the point is that ebay was supposed to clean these things up,i guess i,m dreaming in color.
auctions are supposed to be that the highest winner gets the item then pays for the right costs of shipping and handling. if the seller wants a specific amount for a card put a reserve on it. don,t boost up the shipping charges to make sure you get a certain amount

Unless the seller uses Xpresspost or some other service, which would make $15 fair, depending on your relative location to the seller.

Everyone's out to get someone it seems.... everyone has their axe to grind.
 
I'd rather wait a few days and only pay 2 or 3 bucks for shipping. Not only that but the odds are he isn't going to pay 15 to ship it himself.
 
he,s sending it reg.mail. no one answered my original question which was , wasn,t ebay supposed to do something about excessive shipping charges???
 
you can report the item to eBay if you believe the shipping costs are extraordinarily high. That said, I am sure $15.95 includes some kind of added service such as registered mail or what have you. At $95, the buyer is protecting himself from the recent rash of scammers on eBay.
 
As a buyer and a seller on ebay, when I'm selling I state that any item ending over $50 requires the xpresspost shipping ($15) but anything under that I send regular mail. ($3.00). When I'm buying it all depends on the value of the card. If the card is a $7 card I certainly wouldn't be paying $15 for shipping. But if it's worth a decent amount I don't mind having the security of tracked shipping.
If he stated that regular mail is $15 and change, I'd ask him if a cheaper shipping option is available and if not I'd move on. (Or if you really really want the card, you just might have to bite your lip and bid)

So, let me ask you this: if you, as a buyer were responsible for whether or not the item gets to you, would you still be happy with regular shipping without tracking, etc? Sellers are in a no-win situation. Either they take the chance to get a chargeback or they get slammed for overcharging on shipping. This is the buyer mentality that eBay has created

I still use ebay for buying stuff I need, but I would never use it to sell. The buyer has to much power and can easily abuse that position, which many do.
Lately it has been slim pickings for cards anyway as most sellers have clued in to the above and have shyed away.

A better alternative is desperately needed.

Exactly. I can tell you for certain that if I want to ship anything to the US with tracking, I have to pay for registered mail which is just over $15. This is what I charge on higher priced items and that does not account for the cost of my envelope or supplies. If the card gets sent with $10 or more to ship, I don't see any legitimate complaint. Now if it gets sent regular mail, that is concerning.
 
I generally buy things in the U.S. before I buy anything in Canada when it comes to average cards. The only time I go north of the border is for something rare or really nice which will ultimately be high dollar anyway so shipping doesn't bother me really.

If a guy has a $100 card I want and I'm willing to pay $100 total, I would just bid $85 to factor in the shipping. No biggie.

I know several large dealer's who have stopped international shipping altogether. The majority of what they sell is hockey. Why? Because the clowns out there have pulled fast ones on him and they've grown tired of it. (One of them was burned for $900) Will they make as much? No, but I see why they do it.

Peace of mind is sometimes priceless. Blame Paypal and Ebay, not the seller.
 
i see you are in Canada. is the seller from the US? you said he's sending it registered mail. if so, that'll cost him at least $11 + postage. so figure about $13 and an extra $2 due to handling, supplies, bubble mailer and his shipping charge is appropriate.

ebay won't crack down on someone charging the going rate for sending registered mail. now if he winds up not sending registered, that's a different story.

If the bolded part in the OP post is correct I think he is in the right for being complaining except for the fact that if you don't like the shiping charges don't bid..move on to another item...I have a couple of cheevers autos(one is UM)...probably not worth insuring

i too sell cards at times ,i agree that there are alot of scammers out there,yes if the card is worth say 50-60 bucks it would be wise to get it by registered mail.but not say(10-20)card and the seller doesn,t give you an option on how you would like it shipped.
right now the buyer does have the upper hand over the seller,the whole point of ebay cracking down on over charging was to make it more honest to the buyer(or was it that paypal was losing money) i tried emailing ebay but no reply,has any one ever heard of ebay applying it to some one, id like to know
