Slimming down collection - who do I keep?

Not another I'm out of the hobby forever threads, but decided I need to put a hold on the frantic spending that I've been allowing to happen over the last little while.

I'm thinning down what I collect to a single solitary player (atleast as far as cards are concerned). And I have a choice.

Dustin Tokarski or Vinny Lecavalier.

Tokarski is mostly due to watching him play for Team Canada and the Spokane Chiefs over the last couple years, and Vinny because the Bolts are my favourite team, and he is my favourite player.

But football to the groin had a football to the groin ;)

Anyways, which player would you choose to continue after and why? It's hard for me because I have a solid collection of both, but I know if I keep both, I'm not exactly accomplishing much as far as thinning the collection goes ;)
 
I would say Vinnie. He's an established star and possible hall of famer. I don't even know if Tokarski will be a starter in the NHL. You could argue that last point but I think Vinnie will give you more options going forward.

I definately agree but in this day and time which one would be cheaper to continue to collect? If you are into high end cards Tokarski would definately be less of a hit to the wallet, but you have many more options with Lecavalier. But I would probably go with Lecavalier just because of the broader spectrum of cards, but also are you a collect all or just high end, or auto's/patch/jersey collector? That would influence my decision as well.
 
^ That's a good follow up question. I'm going to try and keep it to rarer items. Print runs of under 25 or so. I mean, if I'm slimming down, no sense going for reasonably common items (print runs of 100 and up).

I think Lecavalier over the long haul will offer me more chances at cards like that, but who's to say Tokarski doesn't become the next Steve Mason?

That is an even better question, but I would have to rebuttle by saying that just from experience of collecting rookies and minor leaguers it turns into a big gamble (especially from a CBJ fan perspective i.e. Gilbert Brule, Nikolai Zherdev, etc.). I would say go with Tokarski if you are up to roll the dice or if you feel like betting on a stable stock go with Lecalvier.

I'd go with Vinny. It will give you more options to choose from when picking up cards.
 
If you're looking to slim the collection and slow it down considerably, go with Tokarski. All this talk about "more options to choose from" is sort of antithetical to your desire to not spend tons of cash. With Tokarski you may have another season or so of only ITG releases, which will certainly help your bankbook (does anybody still use a bankbook?) and focus on getting the hard-to-find items from previous releases. If you go the Vinny route, well, Artifacts. Say no more, ya know? LOL
 
Depends on what types of things you like to collect. You have to figure that Tokarski probably won't see much in terms of GU/Auto in UD products whereas Vinny will. Cost, enjoyment, etc factor in as well.

It might be more expensive, but I'd go with Vinny because of the quality of the cards he has available.
 
I think for the calibre of player he is, Vinny is still relatively cheap to collect.

How many Tokaski cards will there be to collect over the next few years? It might take him 3-4 years to make the NHL, if ever.
 
I'm going to suggest a different answer... both. Yeah, I know... seems counterproductive?

If you can pick and choose the cards you want as opposed to needing to pick up every one (even if only those under /25) simply because it was produced then you can maintain a decent collection of both players. And as NNeves said, if Tokaski's cards are going to be lightly produced over the next few years then it's definitely doable to collect both, but be more focused and selective.
 
go for both. i was in the same boat as you with the spending and decided to "slim it down." rather than go after every Lundqvist card, i'm now very selective with what cards i buy and go after both Lundqvist and Mason. i started both in their rookie seasons and luckily for me, both have panned out very nicely.
 
If you're really interested in slowing the spending I think the choice is clear, particularly for rare cards, you should go for tokarski

When you are starting to compete for cards /10 /5 /1 against vinny collectors you are going to run into significantly more opposition, which is going to get pricey - especially given that you are going to run into a lot more of these lower run cards for vinny, which is going to hit the wallet. the fewer # of tokarski cards /10 etc will allow you to safely have the coin to acquire them when they arise.
 
Collecting a player everyone else does is ehh if you ask me. Much more fun to look at mailposts of a guy that wont be in 2-3 other posts :) I say stick with Tokarski as it'd be more fun to collect and follow a career of a guy like him in my eyes...
 
I'm leaning towards Tokarski - it's likely going to continue to be cheaper - you've likely seen him play more and there's something to be said for collecting players that no one else seems to...

This point would also incline me to say Tokarski; however, based on what you'd written earlier if you want to chase cards with print runs of about /25 or less than the better chase would be Vinny because there are more cards out there. You could probably scoop up all of the Tokarski and then the itch to get other stuff may come back; I know it would for me.

So after that I say go with Tokarski.
