The Day The Music Died

"The message board becomes a boxing ring..."
OK - Nickelback sucks - just thought I would throw that out there.

And the theme song is not tradition - Hockey Night in Canada is tradition - not the entry music. Listen, I grew up on it too but the fact that there is a different tune at the start isn't going to change Coaches Corner or the Hot Stove or the crappy quality that comes from the CBC broadcast - you're still going to get to see Montreal or Toronto play early and Calgary or Edmonton play late - get over it.

I know it will be missed and that intro just won't be the same but nine months from now no one is going to care. Am I a little peeved they are getting rid of the tune, sure...but am i going to lose any sleep over the matter, write CBC or stop watching...no way.

So, I guess if they changed the National Anthem that's ok too? Heck, we still live in Canada, right?

No one said they'd stop watching because of it. Everyone is simply saying they shouldn't mess with tradition. And, no matter what you say, the theme song IS part of the tradition of HNIC, just like Coaches Corner is

You can't seriously be comparing the Canadian National Anthem (or any countries for that matter) to the theme song of a television program.

A national anthem is a symbol of pride for an entire nation - embodying the culture, history, people, struggles, etc of that nation. They are used to champion a cause, sporting event, political rally, national holidays and on and on - theme shows to television programs do not envoke such symbolism or patriotism.

How many people outside of Canada could identify the theme and how many could identify O' Canada? This is hardly a fair comparison.

Again - I get it - we grew up with the Saturday games and have watched HNIC (well in my case anyway) for the past 25 years or so. Any changes are not going to be met with a large group hug. Will we miss the theme? Absolutely! But is it really worth having a coronary over - no.

CBC is probably making a bad decision here - they are going to gain no viewers by doing this and are going to torque off the masses - in what cause, to save a couple thousand bucks...bad move. But how long could we complain if all we did was look at television stations and what we don't like - I personally don't have enough time to worry about it.

That's where you don't understand this issue, Joe... it IS a symbol for patriotism in Canada. It IS our second national anthem, whether or not anyone outside of Canada recognizes it or not.

Hmmm, I think the majority of people would put 'God Save the Queen' ahead of the HNIC theme. I know I would. And there are a lot of people inside Canada that wouldn't recognize the HNIC theme for what it is, let alone as a 'second national anthem.' I love hockey as much as the next person, but I have noticed that the sole devotee to the sport of hockey is becoming a rarer, and rarer breed. People who post on a message board about hockey cards are not a representative sample of the country, let's be realistic. You are overstating the case here. I find it borderline disturbing that a TV jingle would be elevated to 'anthem' status personally.

I think the CBC is stupid, and becoming increasingly irrelevant, but I am not going to miss Saturday night hockey games because they changed the song.

I have a gut feeling that we could throw this back and forth for days and that most, if not every Canadian on this message board would completely agree with you, however, I think that may be a fairly skewed poll of Canada in general as well.

I may be completely wrong here but I would gather that if one were to conduct a national poll as to what is the secondary national anthem of Canada - the theme to Hockey Night in Canada woulnd't make the list, or would be quite low. I would guess that God Save the Queen, that Maple Leaf song, maybe even half a dozen songs by the Hip would make the list, heck Stompin Tom Conners might finish higher than HNIC.

Again - don't get me wrong here - I'm not condoning what CBC is doing, I think it is utterly rediculous. Sure the song and intro are a bit dated but really, who cares - like you mentioned, every viewer loves that intro and is bitter it is going the way of the dodo. But I also know when stuff like this happen, people tend to overexaggate the significance of what is going away - its just human nature I think.

Just for kicks I did a poll of the people in my office and the fellow smokers I caught outside during one of my "fresh air" breaks. 4 of the 19 people I talked to are big hockey fans, 5 admitted to watching a game here and there (but usually only the playoffs), and the other 10 said they couldn't care less about sports in general; nevermind hockey in particular. Only 2 of those 19 didn't care. The other 17 were either outraged, pissed off or just shook their head at the decision. The majority of those 17 also brought up many of the points in this thread (tradition, second anthem, defines HNIC, etc). Small sample? Yep. Proving the point? Absolutely.

I'd like to see the stats on that.

Let's see yours to prove the HNIC theme IS the second national anthem. You brought it up first, and stated it unequivocally. Hard statistics from an unbiased source.

I could do a survey of people and tell them that the CBC made ANY decision whatsoever and the majority of people will shake their heads in disgust.

I would love to see this done. I bet the results would lean my way. Regardless this point is just an opinion on both of our parts.

Bottom line... CBC sucks for even thinking about doing this.

I tend to doubt it. 30 million people in the country, and HNIC gets 3 million viewers on an exceptionally good night.

From the first source I found on google: 2.11 million for Game 1

Without a doubt. I'd say 80-85% of people know that song. I betcha it would be the 2nd most "known" song behind the anthem

I'm gonna go ahead and predict that the HNIC theme is back strong and proud next season, and for many seasons to come.

If not, I will predict that TSN steals it, and within 10 years, CBC will not be carrying any hockey games, as they will all be non TSN

Also, I actually have a picture of the Queen, AND Prince Phillip hanging in my dining room. My dad was english, my grandparents were english, I root for England in international soccer, and I love fish and chips.....but the HNIC theme beats out God Save the Queen 8 trillion to 1 as far the title of "Canada's second anthem" goes.

And their music is great. Deal with it.

You had me till here Bruce. That should read "Their "song" is great" considering they've remixed the same song over and over again since 1999, adding different words each time ;)

I got your back on Corner Gas though for sure, and any hate spewed towards Little Mosque on the Prairie...if that extra $500 is being used toward doubling the salary of the cast of Little Mosque from $30 to $60 an episode, I can live with the fact that I'll have to Youtube or Google the HNIC theme once in a while. Of course, Laura and I probably make up 2/3 of the entire weekly audience for Little Mosque, so it might not be the wisest investment.

I'll back Bruce up on another thing too. I don't know the words or the tune to God Save the Queen, nor would I bet most of the people I know do...but we sure know what the HNIC song means. It's been a fairly iconic staple of my Saturday nights for the last 20 years, but really...is this any different than anything in this world? 2 months into the season will you still care there's a different theme? You'll probably be more upset that you have to keep hearing "SATURDAYYYYYYY SATURDAY SATURDAY SATURDAYYYYYYYYY SATURDAY" over every video montage.

You don't go to a restaurant for the way they wrap everything up...you go for the food. The wrapping is just extra. Sure the theme song loss sucks, but you're not tuning in specifically for it anyway. You're tuning in for the hockey.
