Tim Horton "Patch Cards"

Honest question......just curious.

Out of the 50 or so cases you've dealt with over the past year, how many do you think opened them because they're trying to take advantage of the situation and are looking to get "something for nothing" so to speak vs. how many really didn't know what they were getting....thus an honest mistake?

About 95% of the cases opened are the buyers inability to read or thinking they are getting an amazing deal. Most of these cases are from the non sport category. The biggest issues I have are from sets like this where the buyer doesn’t read anything and thinks they are getting an amazing deal:

https://www.ebay.com/itm/1994-Dart-...3A4957b93f15f0aa49367121f2fffeb346%7Ciid%3A26

Or

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2012-Marve...171207?hash=item25e229a9c7:g:~z0AAOSwgzlZ3VAd

Anyone who actually takes a step back and thinks about it for a half of second SHOULD come to the conclusion of, “wow, why would something that usually goes for quite a bit more than this still be available, and why does it say 1994 or 2011, 2012 in the title.”

Personally the most frustrating part of this is when I contact the buyer immediately asking them if they know they bought a trading card instead of the actual item depicted on the card and they don’t contact me back until five minutes after I ship it.

That right there tells me a lot. I agree, buyers SHOULD be able to come to the conclusion themselves. Especially when the information is very clearly laid out. I think the example posted by the OP shows a lack of that IMO.

Thanks very much for your insight.

I agree with you 100% that the seller in this case should be more clearer, but he is doing the bare minimum to protect his rear. It is similar to the people who post the fridge magnets of cards or the people who sell the empty video game boxes.

I never addressed the response of buyers who are trying to get something for nothing. Those scam buyers have evolved to the point where they try to leave as little of foot print as possible so they can continue to scam.

OK.....I know it's not a Tim Horton's card, but I'm just curious to get opinions of this kind of offering.

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2016-17-SP...575416?hash=item440f0226f8:g:a-gAAOSwbw1Z9F-b

It clearly says CUSTOM a couple times in the title and description. So is this ok??

Here's another one....

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2015-16-Ul...576680?hash=item440f022be8:g:vlEAAOSw8DJZ9F-0

No problem right??? He's upfront with his offerings. It's all good.........isn't it??

IMO.....it absolutely is not. This is the kind of stuff where the word "custom" will magically disappear after one or two more transactions. Then people will think it's a completely legit card.

This is no different than the patch faking.....it's just that the seller isn't misleading anyone. That just doesn't make it right in my books.

I noticed this tonight when doing some searches. Found this and completely shook my head....

Funny thing is he's taken a $6-8 card and turned it into something nobody will likely be interested in. If the sticker peels off easily, you can probably get this for the buck he's asking for it.

Some people will do anything for a buck.

Wow! Thanks for posting that. It's only a matter of time before UD takes legal action on stuff like this.

bamlinden nailed it (in bold below).

Let the misleading begin (intensify?):

https://www.ebay.com/itm/2016-17-Up...372025?hash=item466eaa6739:g:U54AAOSweM1Z9brf

Nothing in the title, you have to search really deeply into the description to figure out it's custom.

The back of the card is pictured and describes it a legitimate. The seller has nearly 600 other items that appear to be mostly legitimate.

If a future buyer ever tries to resell this card, do we think it'll be advertised as CUSTOM? Or simply listed and in the future, assumed to be legitimate? The serial numbering indicates that it should be a patch card. If you're going to custom a card (another conversation altogether), at least take the certification of legitimacy off the back.

I wonder if this is the original 05/25 or a duplicate like some of the others seem to be. It's on 180pt stock. This posting -- and by association, for me at least, this seller -- is all kinds of shady.

I just stumbled across the same guy’s auctions last night while doing my usual Lord Stanley’s Mug search...

https://m.ebay.com/itm/2013-14-ITG-...IKE-VERNON-JOE-NIEUWENDYK-Flames/302504372988

What’s interesting is, unless his colour settings on his scanner are wonky, it really looks like he glued two cards together here - the front ‘Cup Holders’ text looks to be written in silver while the back says it is the gold version. These cards are normally 100 pt thickness while he says his is 130 pt. Makes me curious as to just how much of a monstrosity this Franken-card is if you look at it up close especially around the edges. Also sad that he destroyed an x/10 gold card from my favourite set of all time.

Totally agree with bamlinden, this is not a good practice I want to see in the hobby... a disclosed faked patch card today will undoubtedly resurface without the disclaimer down the road. It’s one thing to add a patch to a card that never had material and thus no manufacturer’s note of authenticity printed on the back, but selling something that does have an LOA but replacing the exact portion that the LOA covered is super-shady to me.

I don’t think his scanner is wonky. I think his brain is wonky.

He’s destroying some pretty nice - low numbered/low printrun cards.

Lame.

The guy making the custom Tim Horton's cards is getting pretty elaborate. Tim Horton's Auston Matthews shield and lace "1/1" booklet: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/17-18-TIM-H...534107?hash=item466ecb64db:g:WSUAAOSwH2VZ9rR3

I stumbled upon his listings when this showed up in my Leafs Centennial search: https://www.ebay.ca/itm/AUSTON-MATT...057802?hash=item466f8a7d8a:g:Y9UAAOSwC-taAoQQ If only the actual patch cards in the set looked that nice!

I'm just mainly stunned at the prices he's managing to get for these types of cards.

Maybe Upper Deck should do what the government does with really good hackers. Bring them into the fold. This guy's creativity is fantastic, although his actions seem to indicate a questionable set of morals.
