TradeCentre: Offseason Deals

The Atlanta Thrashers have re-signed restricted free agent forward Niclas Bergfors.

The 23-year forward totaled 44 points, 21 goals, 23 assists, in 81 games with the New Jersey Devils and Thrashers last season while adding nine power play goals and six game-winning goals.

The 5-11, 195-pound right wing has totaled 45 points (22 goals, 23 assists) in 90 career NHL games with New Jersey and Atlanta. He added 150 points (64 goals, 86 assists) in 257 career American Hockey League games over four seasons with Albany and Lowell from 2005 to 2009.

DUCKS ink Bobby Ryan to five-year, $25.5M Deal

Forward Bobby Ryan and the Anaheim Ducks have finally reached an agreement on a contract.

Sources tell TSN that the restricted free agent has signed a five-year contract with the Ducks worth $25.5 million.

The 23-year-old played in 81 games with the Ducks last season and posted 35 goals and 29 assists.

Anaheim selected Ryan second overall in the 2005 draft, and in 168 games over three seasons, he has posted 71 goals and 60 assists.

Coyotes sign Eric Belanger to a one year contract

Skating for Washington in last year's playoffs, Eric Belanger felt his teeth shatter when Edmonton defenceman Marc-Andre Bergeron's stick whacked him in the face.

Not wanting to miss any time -- it was the playoffs, after all -- Belanger had emergency surgery inside the arena, including the trimming of exposed tooth roots, and returned in time for the third period.

Gritty determination like that was one of the reasons the Phoenix Coyotes went after the veteran centre this off-season.

Phoenix got its man on Tuesday, signing Belanger to a one-year free agent deal after he was initially expected to re-sign with Washington.

Terms of the deal weren't disclosed.

He would have gotten that on the open market. It was no secret that Ryan is one of Burke's boys, he wanted him as a Leaf. I don't mind the signing, it seems to be about right compared to similar NHL contracts.

$5mill + per year is wayyyyyy too much for Bobby Ryan this early in the game.

I would have to disagree with that based on comparable contracts/players.

- Kessel @ 5.4M for 5 years
- Toews @ 6.3M for 5 years
- Kane @ 6.3M for 5 years
- Vanek @ 7.14M for 6 years
- Stastny @ 6.6M for 5 years
- Kopitar @ 6.8M for 7 years
- Carter @ 5M for 3 years
- Pavelski @ 4M for 4 years
- Getzlaf @ 5.325M for 5 years
- Perry @ 5.325M for 5 years

I believe most, if not all these guys signed their aforementioned deals coming off their entry level contracts (just like Ryan). Ryan has scored 31 and 35 goals respectively his first 2 full seasons in the NHL. His namely certainly belongs right in the mix with all those guys I just mentioned.

He's most certainly in line with what he's worth based on comparables.

Ryan also brings another aspect to the game besides goals. Good deal for the Ducks, I would be glad to have my Rags offer him that.

Rangers re-up Marc Stall for 5 years @ 3.9 per.

Love this signing, so glad they got him long term as well. He is such a good example of the perfect defenseman. He is rarely out of position and simply dominates when he is out there. Not to mention an awesome work ethic and attitude. He could easily be one of the captains in the years to come (first vote goes to Cally though)

The Anaheim Ducks signed defenceman Paul Mara to a one-year contract.

Mara appeared in 42 games for the Montreal Canadiens last season, collecting eight assists with 48 penalty minutes. The 31-year-old suffered a shoulder injury in January and missed the final 30 games of the regular season. In 2008-09 with the New York Rangers, Mara recorded 21 points in 76 contests, ranking fourth among club defencemen in points.

The Dallas Stars locked up a pair of their young players late Thursday, when they signed restricted free agents James Neal and Matt Niskanen to two-year contracts.

Neal, 23, will earn $2.25 million this season and $3.5 million in 2011-12. The left winger broke out in his rookie season with 27 goals and 28 assists in 78 games for Dallas.

Defenceman Niskanen, also 23, is entering his fourth NHL campaign. He will earn $3 million over the next two seasons ($1.25 million this year, and $1.75 million in 2011-12). He counted three goals and 12 assists in 74 games on the Dallas blueline.

The Stars are conducting their training camp in Charlottetown, PEI.

Columbus Blue Jackets' netminder Steve Mason has agreed to terms on a two-year contract extension worth $5.8 million.

Mason will earn $2.6 million for the first year of the deal and $3.2 million in the second for an average annual value of $2.9 million.

The 22-year old Mason struggled mightily in his sophomore season after a stellar rookie campaign that saw him capture the Calder Memorial trophy. This past season the Oakville, Ontario native saw his numbers dip across the board, posting a .901 save percentage and a 3.06 goals against average.

Originally a third-round pick, 69th overall by the Blue Jackets in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Mason helped Canada capture gold at the 2008 World Junior Hockey Championship in the Czech Republic.

The Washington Capitals have locked up a key part of their defence corps as Tom Poti has signed a two-year extension with the team worth $5.75 million.

Poti will earn $3 million in the first year of the contract and $2.75 million in the second. The extension will kick in following this season. Poti is in the final year of his old deal that will see him earn $3.5 million.

The 33-year old Poti had four goals and 24 assists in 70 games with the Caps last season. He added four assists in the Capitals first round playoff loss to the Canadiens.

I wonder how Jason feels about this? lol

The Washington Capitals signed goaltender Michal Neuvirth to a two-year contract.

The 22-year-old saw action in 17 games as a rookie in the 2009-10 season and registered a 9-4 record with a 2.75 goals against average and .914 save percentage.

Capitals Sign Goaltender Brandon Anderson

The Washington Capitals have signed free agent goaltender Brandon Anderson to a three-year entry-level contract, vice president and general manager George McPhee announced today. In keeping with club policy, financial terms of the deal were not disclosed.

Anderson, 18, is a 6’0”, 176-pound native of Langley, British Columbia, who currently plays for the Lethbridge Hurricanes of the Western Hockey League (WHL). Anderson finished his rookie season with a 12-19-1-1 record, a 3.49 goals-against average and a .892 save percentage in 37 games. Anderson recently took part in Capitals rookie camp and appeared in the team’s win against the Philadelphia Flyers’ rookies on Sept. 16. He participated in the first day of the team’s main training camp before returning to Lethbridge.

Rangers sign Fedotenko to one-year, $1 million contract

Ruslan Fedotenko has been rewarded for his strong pre-season as he has signed a one-year, $1 million contract with the New York Rangers.

The 31-year old Fedotenko, who had been in Rangers' camp on a tryout basis, impressed the Rangers' brass sufficiently by leading the team in scoring during the pre-season with one goal and six assists in five pre-season games. He appears to have found some decent chemistry in camp on the Rangers third line with shift disturber Sean Avery and rookie Derek Stepan.

The two-time Stanley Cup champion has 11 goals and 19 assists in 80 games with the Pittsburgh Penguins last season.
