To the Islanders for Moulson, '14 first and '15 second. Keep in mind Moulson is a soon to be UFA as well, along with Vanek.

to add to this, Bob Mackenzie is saying the Islanders don't have an extension with Vanek at the time being.

Also, with Buffalo rebuilding, they could still trade Moulson for more assets. Then they also have Miller as trade bait as well.

Now there is a guy I wish La would have kept on the roster. Moulson is a great sniper but going to Buffalo is gonna hurt his numbers big time.
 
Wow, Vanek will be the first high end, high drafted talent that will ever play with Johny T! Loving this trade! Feel bad for Moulson but them are the breaks. He's been a great Islander and I wish him all the best!
 
Isles will offer big money to Vanek if there's any sort of chemistry with JT.

I wouldn't be surprised if Moulson gets flipped again. Good move by Buffalo. It could turn out to be 2 first and a 2nd for Vanek, which would be more than what they'd get at the trade deadline.
 
Wow I LOVE this trade for Buffalo. As of right now they have two firsts and two or three seconds next season I believe. They can trade Moulson again at the trade deadline and possibly have three first round picks next season and probably the lowest salary going into the offseason. Trade Miller for another draft pick or two. A lot of prospects and a ton of money to spend this offseason. I like it. As long as the Islanders can keep Vanek he should be a BEAST on the Island and put up great numbers. They gotta keep their fingers crossed they can resign him though. Which in my opinion shouldn't be a big problem but what do we know.
 
Good on Buffalo. I'll miss watching Vanek during my 3-4 trips to Buffalo per hockey season, but the team is hurting and needs to load up on assets.

haha I was thinking the same thing. I told my brother they should of taken Miller too for a second round pick and a prospect. If they're serious about a Cup run this year they will need to upgrade the goaltending. Miller looks like he did a few years back when he won the Vezina.
 
I like the Sabres rebuilding process better than Edm's. They're building from the back end out.

If they stink for 2 years, they could add Sam Reinhart, maybe Barbashev (NYI), and have a shot at McDavid the following year.

Having Risto, Zads, Myers, and McBain is pretty solid. Enroth looks ready to be #1.

If they're able to add at least another 1st for Miller, they could add another D (since there's some doubt on Myers).
 
This trade has the potential to be great for both teams, but there is a lot of risk on the Islanders side. They have to get Vanek signed long-term.

and they have MAtt Hackett from the Pominville trade and he could also turn out well for them.

Vanek said he is excited to be heading to Long Island but as I mentioned before, he said there were no talks of a extension as of yet.
 
Personally I think this is a next to TERRIBLE trade for the Islanders. They are shipping out a guy who is 4m cheaper then Vanek and already has VERY good chemistry with JT.

Now Vanek is an elite player, and has been without any real center (almost Like Iginla was in Calgary...)

There is absolutely no guarantee Vanek will have chemistry with Tavares. I think Moulsen and a 2nd rd pick would have been more then enough. Buffalo getting a first, a second AND Moulsen seems WAY too steep. It's not like the Islanders are a lock for a playoff spot at all, and they could very easily miss the playoffs and with the new CBA anyone who missed the playoffs is in the lottery.

Great trade for Buffalo, too much risk for Islanders. Odds are they will offer Vanek a truck load of money, but he could just walk and then this trade will look worse then the Yashin trade.....(okay maybe going to far, but still)
 
Can anyone difinitively say that Vanek is any better - or any different than Moulson?

I can't imagine why the Isles made this trade. Moulson has been one of the most underrated players in hockey since they picked him up.

Say what you will but over the course of the last four seasons (not including this year) Vanek has scored 106 goals and Moulson has scored 112. So they gave up a couple high picks, took on more salary for a guy who is also an upcoming free agent and scores at about the same pace.

Maybe I am wrong and maybe Moulson turns into a 15 goal guy while Vanek gets back to 45 with Tavares. But if he scores anything under 40 a season they have overpaid but a significant margin.

Might be a game of contracts Joe and forecasting to the offseason. Moulson's only on the books for 3 mil right now, and he was probably due a much more significant payday at the end of this season.

Say he's looking in the 6-7 range in July. Who would you rather give that to? Moulson or Vanek? Yes, there's always that possibility that they could've pursued him in the off-season and cut Moulson loose, but methinks some of this was NYI acting early to try to secure Vanek beforehand. Who really knows what GM Couch Pads was thinking when he traded for Vanek, but there's got to be some crazy method to his madness :)
 
Let's assume for a second that is the thought process behind the trade.

1 - Regardless of numbers, Vanek is going to command a higher payday in the offseason than Moulson - my guess anyway. Optics on him are better and, as I mentioned before, no one ever talks about Moulson at all.

2 - You are trading for the higher priced guy that will hamper your ability to make a move at this years deadline should you need, say a goalie or defenseman.

3 - The price for a 60 game audition to see if Vanek is a good fit with JT and/or they can woo him into falling in love with the Island and playing at Barclays is two very high draft picks.
All told - they are spending money this year and two high picks to recruit a player who is, by all accounts, very similar to the guy they have and could have (likely) kept and signed for less.


Now - who knows about backroom dealing and lockerroom issues and such. Maybe Moulson's agent told the team there was no way he was coming back and he was going to be out demanding $8mil per season, maybe his wife misses her sister (who's married to Quick) and they are moving to SoCal. It just seems odd as he clearly had chemistry with JT, has been filling the nets and named Tavares as the godfather of his kid.

I did like the "GM Couch Pads" comment though...very nice!

Vanek hasn't played with anyone even close to Tavares. That's the difference. He's a consistent 25-30 goal guy basically on his own.
